Melbourne squad

Backs: B.Holland, N.Carroll, M.Whelan

Half backs: D.Ward, P.Wheatley, D.Bell

Centreline: B.Moloney, J.McDonald, B.Green

Half forwards: C.Bruce, B.Miller, M.Bate

Forwards: S.Godfrey, M.Jamar, A.Davey

Followers: J.White, N.Jones, T.Johnstone

I/C From: N.Brown, C.Bizzell, C.Johnson, A.Yze, P.Johnson, R.Ferguson, R.Petterd

The final team will be selected at 5:00 pm on Friday.

Other new names selected on the extended bench mark some welcome returns, including Clint Bizzell and Paul Johnson, along with Ryan Ferguson, and 2006 draftee Ricky Petterd sees his name included for a prospective senior debut.

Missing from the squad will be Jared Rivers, who pulled up sore with a hamstring complaint. He will be joined on the sidelines by Melbourne’s lengthy list of casualties, David Neitz (knee – 3-4 weeks), Russell Robertson (knee – 6 weeks), McLean (foot – 5 weeks) and Clint Bartram (knee – TBA).

Byron Pickett will spend another week gaining more match fitness with Sandringham.

No sylvia, what the hell?

Wheatley at CHB. Gold!

Please Daniher, please play Petterd and give me a reason to actually want to watch the game.

Edit: there must be an echo in here because where's Sylvia?

Wheatley, Ward, Jamar...

No Newton, Sylvia, Dunn, Byron, Rivers...

Why even turn up?

No rivers?

No Sylvia is a big surprise, but perhaps they don't feel he is fit enough yet and don't want to risk him.

However the bigger surprise is no Rivers! Just when I thought things couldn't get worse on the injury front, we now have no CHB. Massive loss, but will surely result in the return of the Biz.

My final interchange is: Bizzell, Yze, C Johnson, Ferguson.

Have to admit, I would love to see Petterd get a game, but I don't think it will happen yet.

May i say were f*****

should i waste my sunday going to watch us get flogged.........no

will i..........yes

god help us all

Most weeks by about thurs or friday i get excited and truly believe we can win. this week however i cant see how we will get close to geelong.

No rivers, neita, brock, sylvia, byron, robbo, bartram. which is 7 starting 18 players.

watch out all time turnover record.

ND should at least do the right thing by supporters and pick Pettard.

Otherwise there is no reason to go on Sunday.

Godfrey snd Jamar in forward line

interesting

It maybe like this

Backs:................ M.Whelan,,, N.Carroll,,,,,,, B.Holland

Half backs: ........ C.Bizzell,,,,,, R.Ferguson,, D.Bell

Centreline:......... B.Moloney,,,C.Bruce,,,,,,,,, D.Ward

Half forwards: ....B.Green,,,,,, B.Miller,,,,,,,,,, A.Davey

Forwards:...........M.Bate,,,,,,,, P.Johnson,,,,, A.Yze

Followers: J.White, N.Jones, T.Johnstone

I/C From: M.Jamar, J.McDonald, S.Godfrey, N.Brown, ,,,,, R.Petterd,

OUTS: P.Wheatley, C.Johnson,

INJ: Neitz, Robbo,

Oh my f*cking god?! What is this?!?! Not very confident about this weekend...

Rivers down as well? :( We really are in the dumps injury wise now. Wheatley as CHB? HAHAHA! Now I've seen it all!

Where is Sylvia? Maybe P.J? And wtf is going through the selection panels mind. That team lacks any semblance of class! Looking at that forward line, and going by recent weeks form, we will be lucky to kick 5-6 goals, let alone win

Does anyone else advocate the selection of PJ as FF for the whole match, with Jamar and White swapping the ruck?

I think it could be worth a try with Neita and Robbo out, just have Yze and Flash at his feet and kick it long.

If Sylvia is not injured and plays for Sandy, that is the last straw straw for ND as far as I'm concerned.

I advocate we fake an outbreak of mad-cow disease at the club, forcing the AFL to suspend any Melbourne matches for 5-6 weeks (depending on the length of McLean's, Neita's, Robbo's and Rivers' injuries)

But if we must line up on Sunday, I hope we don't play someone who can't take an overhead mark at FF.

I have nothing against PJ, I just think it should be a requirement that a forward can take a mark. I'd rather Jamar at FF. At least he might be able to take Scarlett down behind the play or something.

Our best option IMO is to line up with a smaller forward line, and trying to beat the Geelong defenders on the lead. That means Davey, Yze and CJ closer to goal, with Miller and Bruce leading out.

None of this will matter if we lose the clearances though, because a backline of Ward, Bizzell and Ferguson is likely to implode more often than a nuclear plant.

This is total confirmation The Reverend has gone mad.

Sylvia simply must play, from all reports he was fit & simply too good to be in the VFL.

Someone please explain?

  • PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

With both sides precariously positioned ahead of the run home to the finals, only one team involved in Sunday’s clash at the Adelaide Oval between the Power and the Demons will remain a contender when it’s over.  On current form, that one team has to be Melbourne which narrowly missed out on defeating the competition’s power house Collingwood on King's Birthday and also recently overpowered both 2024 Grand Finalists. Conversely, Port Adelaide snapped out of a four-game losing streak with a win against the Giants in Canberra. Although they will be rejuvenated following that victory, their performances during that run of losses were sub par and resulted in some embarrassing blow out defeats.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • PREGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons are set to embark on a four-week road trip that takes them across the country, with two games in Adelaide and a clash on the Gold Coast, broken up by a mid-season bye. Next up is a meeting with the inconsistent Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
