The idea of playing that Greatest Showman 'This is Me' song for a bunch of young male footballers as a seasonal-theme, by what is essentially a young male coach - including on grand final day - and it having any impact on their motivation to perform is so far-fetched and ridiculous to me that I can only imagine this is some sort of grand post-flag [censored]-take cooked up by Goodwin and the players and delivered with admirable Academy-worthy straight-faces.

Like, seriously? On each side of that scenario, my estimation of Goody either plummets or sky-rockets. It's not about the subject, just the notion that such cheesy lyrics and music could possibly inspire and be promoted by the demographic. Let's not forget the five years of preparation to get to this current point and the off-season buy-in from the players. I doubt the song is related at all, and I'm sure would have been met with mega eye-rolls from a millennial generation.

The song sounds pretty lame to me as well Skuit but I’m no fan of musicals so not the best judge. But I don’t think its about the song. It’s about the lady who sings the song. She overcame her fears, seized the moment and sang her heart out. Perfectly analogous to what we subsequently produced in the granny.

Maybe Goody could have played ACDC and got the same result. But he didn't, he played "This is Me" and the team produced a scintillating performance. I reckon he knew what he was doing and got the desired reaction from the team

Seeing you weren't there you wouldn't know would you. I was told by people within the industry prior to Goodwin taking full control that he would be a better coach than Roos' and that is how it has played out.

What a ridiculous post on multiple levels.

Go on . . . Actually, on second thoughts, don't. What was intended as a jokey lend of the concept of a bunch of footy-heads sitting around listening to musicals has somehow morphed into me smashing a scared cow with a baseball bat.

Please everyone stop quoting me. I'm sorry I deeply upset some of you with my post. This place use to be way funnier when the MFC was a hot mess at risk of folding. But as penance I will now adopt the song as my personal affirmation.

I've highlighted the lyrics below which have particular resonance in my journey to be a better version of me.

I am not a stranger to the dark
Hide away, they say
'Cause we don't want your broken parts
I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars
Run away, they say
No one'll love you as you are
But I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown 'em out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
Another round of bullets hits my skin
Well, fire away 'cause today, I won't let the shame sink in
We are bursting through the barricades and
Reaching for the sun (we are warriors)
Yeah, that's what we've become (yeah, that's what we've become)
I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown 'em out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
This is me
And I know that I deserve your love
(Oh-oh-oh-oh) There's nothing I'm not worthy of
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh)
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown 'em out
This is brave, this is bruised
This is who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come (look out 'cause here I come)

Some people just can’t be pleased.

the coach says the themes behind this song were a key driver behind a flag.

after all the sh$t goody’s has copped, now he is lying about why and how we won the flag???!

There is nothing un-common or non-believable about this. A standard coaching tactic used all over the world.

A key part of a coaches job is to motivate their players :- with a wide variety of methods to choose from.

To suggest that Goody is lying about how he motivated the players is just about the most laughable thing I have ever heard from a Demons supporter.

The fact that he was going to say “this is us, here we are” in the speech is evidence enough for me, as to how important a theme he feels it was.

I kinda get what you're saying but the inspiration is about the the mantra  they have been repeating all year. Just be us, do it our way, don't listen to outsiders, be the best person and best teammate you can be.

It's not about the lyrics per se, its the message attached to the song.

There would have been a number of themes discussed during the year at various stages and at the end of the day it doesn't matter what the catalyst is, its the outcome of getting players to be their best,

I reckon this timeless classic should be our pregame go to motivational song of choice next season

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
