I've made no secret of the fact that I hope the Dees draft Jacob Van Rooyen from Claremont at Pick 17. And I do think he'll likely be available at that pick. But the question is, who do I think we should draft if Van Rooyen is taken earlier?

Well in my opinion the answer is Rhett Bazzo, also from WA, but out of Swan Districts (Neville Jetta's old club).

Key position player with a huge kick, who like Van Rooyen can play at either end of the ground, but is probably more considereda defender.

Was named at FB in the Cal Twomey's U/18's team of the year, this is what Cal said about him.

Key defender/forward
195cm/81kg
Swan Districts/Western Australia
17/10/03

Nudged his way into the top-30 after his standout key defensive game earlier this month for Western Australia. Bazzo collected 18 disposals against South Australia and showed he can set up the play with the ball in his hands and his penetrating kicking. Bazzo was an All-Australian at under-16s level and has proven he can also swing into attack and make an impact too.

Rhett Bazzo

Born in 2003. Jeepers creepers. Now AF feels old on a Saturday morning.

I'd take him on name alone.

Lure Clint Bizzell out of retirement and draft Wylie Buzza and we could have a line of Bizzell, Bazzo & Buzza.

We've already got a BBB mate

Sounds like a kid who is mature beyond his years. Had to grow up fast and it’s likely the death of his father makes him appreciate things more.
He is probably not on the radar from a needs basis but JT sees character and potential highly so he could still be on the list.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
