AFL Memberships

Not sure if this has appeared on Demonland, but this is a very interesting survey regarding AFL club support and memberships.

We all would be hoping for increased memberships as a result of success and hopefully future achievements. However based on our supporter base and current membership conversion which is already at a very high level, getting over 65,000 members might be difficult.

note that the survey was for 14+ tears old

to increase our members into the future years we need to capture the young kids in primary school

Some of those figures look peculiar to say the least, I find it hard the fathom the Crows having 400,000 more fans than Port Adelaide.

And I would be surprised if there are that many more St Kilda supporters than Dees fans based on these results.

Every year they come out with the same statistics which have a very fundamental flaw.

Ask anyone in NSW which AFL side they follow, and they say Sydney, not because they do, but it is the only one reported on in that state.  It would be the same as asking people in Melbourne which NRL club they support.

You can see the same problem in SA.  Does anyone seriously think they have that much support nationwide?  There are only 2 clubs in the state, and you either support Port or you hate them.

Morgans then translate those state based survey result into nationwide support.

Trouble is 4 of the top 5 sides identified in the survey come from the 2 team based States, all outside Victoria.

Surely that should ring a bell?

I just thought a professional market research firm could see the flawed methodology. Maybe I went wrong when I thought “professional”. 😀

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
