Couple of thoughts about that -

Lightning doesn't strike the same place twice... because after it struck the first time, it ain't the same place no more. Top-8 teams are less likely to have return games against top-8 teams because the teams they beat are, obviously, a win down.

Also, if you're in the top-8, you've only got 7 teams to pick from! As much as Melbourne have been said to be playing against themselves too often / there are two very different Melbourne sides!

Finally, of course St Kilda play the top-8 again. Saints are practically the dividing line. You beat them, you'll be a top-8 team. You lose to them, no finals for you.

Right now I'd argue that beating/losing to St Kilda is a more reliable indicator of whether you'll play finals than current ladder position. :laugh:

    Every team plays 5 teams twice this season, we've got GWS, Hawks, Dogs, Crows and Cats, and at the moment only 2 of them are in the top 8. So it's just showing who's in the current top 8 who teams play twice.

    Well of the top 8 we haven't played Brisbane, PA or WCE. And we haven't played the 9th place Bombers.

    And We play Cats (4th), Dogs (2nd) and GWS (10th) again.

    So 7 of 11 (63%) games against top 10 sides, which account for 52% of the teams (excluding us obviously).

    Slightly harder than average.

     

    But I did notice that we also only play sides below us, and no other team can say that.

      One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs.
