Some months ago, a clever poster posted this suggestion:

Send 18 teams with coaches and staff to Tassie, wait 2 weeks then start training for a lightning premiership season based on a truncated series of matches.

Every team plays every other team once (there is of course no home ground advantage) over a short period, say two games a week with minimum 3 days rest with a new game every night for the season to clean up with the TV viewing (just like T20 cricket). If the season runs into spring and summer, so what as it never gets too hot in Tassie and there is no international cricket season to protect.

Modify the scheme for multiple hubs and there is still the structure that has been used. So when Whispering says:

The Melbourne Football Club should hand out an award to the person who came up with the concept of the 20 day football frenzy the football world experienced from Round 9 to the completion of Round 12 on Monday.

I accept the award on behalf of the clever poster.

The idea of playing in a bubble was actually floated by @Diamond_Jim and then @binman ran with it.

This was back in mid-March well before your April thread @tiers

I'm officially stripping @binman of the title of the Binman Plan and giving it to Diamond Jim.

Have to concede. well done to Diamond Jim. Some might say he ia more successful than his earlier namesake.

I agree with this thread. Binman has been getting unfair plaudits for being the concept originator. I knew it was someone else who first floated the idea and actually thought it was me. There's no evidence to support my own case though. I'm mostly too lazy to post what I think half the time without the encouragement of whisky. Anyone want to hear my radical finals shake-up idea again? I posted it on here once for time-stamped posterity if anyone else ever hit on the same idea or stole it.

I just saw this thread. Happy for Jim to receive the award but like all great ideas they need some work to take to the next level.

I shined Jim's diamond and made it sparkle.

Even wrote to the AFL to ask them to pass 'our' idea on to Gill

Did Gil or his minders respond bin?

I have a few suggestions around the holding the ball rule and could do with an inside line.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
