The Jesse Hogan trade

Fremantle gets Hogan and pick 65

Melbourne gets pick six and 23

Winning: Melbourne

Hogan is yet to get his body right so on the face value of just pick six and 23 for the key forward, it's the Demons in front. Separately, the Demons delivered pick six for Steven May who's yet to work and Hogan has three years up his sleeve on May to prove the Demons wrong.

The Steven May trade

Melbourne gets May and Kade Kolodjashnij

Gold Coast gets pick six

Winning: Gold Coast

Steven May's lack of pre-season conditioning came back to haunt him during the season, finishing with eight games to his name. Kolodjashnij, the steak knives in the deal, also managed two AFL matches before concussion again took its toll. After 12 months the Suns are ahead with their selection with pick six, tall forward Ben King, looking a 15-year key-position prospect. Now they've just got to find a way to convince him to stay beyond 2020.

Freo get Jesse - Looking like a loss

We get May - Looking like a loss

Suns get King - Looks the goods but wont stay.

Hogan, May and KK have certainly kept the doctors busy

This situation needs another year. May was good when available, Hogan had pre-season issues and his feet have to be a major concern. I watched King several times (including his best game v Carlton) and can't say I was blown away. Don't get me wrong, he might be the A grader some are predicting, but I would say the jury is still out. He only averaged 7 possesions a game and just over a goal, I know he is developing, but there's not much there to get excited about.

Whereas Weideman averaged 10 possessions and 1 goal a game in his fourth season.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.

The Demons were sloppy all day and could not stop the run and carry of the fast moving Hawthorn as the Hawks cruised to an easy 36 point win. Is the season over yet?
