Looking back on our rising star nominations.

Could only find four from 2016, Clayton Oliver, Christian Pettraca, James Harmes and Oscar Mcdonald.

None in 2017, 2018 or this year.

Is this an indication of our problems?

Is it selection and/or development problems our of young players?

The young players have not taken any game apart in three years!

Are they playing roles and not their natural game, are the older listed ones not supporting them? Maybe there is a  pecking order problem, MFC a land of hierarchy and knowing your place.

The recruitment team can't be that bad, not one of the new selections in three years has had a champion of a game.

Let's hope the coaching and support staff can get the best out of some of our young group.

Is mediocrity what MFC settle for?

Hope we get rid of list fillers and get more stars in the mix.

Yeah, haven’t heard “in Jason Taylor I trust” for sometime.

As I’ve been saying, Jason needs to start getting em right.

Spargo arguably could’ve got one last year. Played ok early in the season and his last 3 games of 2019 he was a key contributor in terms of goal assists and kicked 2 in a final.

Fritsch was a year too old to get one last year.

It's not even a decent award.  Three of the modern greats - Dane Swan, Jonathon Brown and Garry Ablett Jnr, didn't even receive nominations, yet Sam Blease and Jordyn Gysberts received multiple nominations. I'd take the rising star award with a huge grain of salt.

I can see the issue that you are seeing here. We really haven’t blooded that many youngsters and those that have have only played a handful of games.

Weid and Spargo would have been nice to get one - and if Weid had his Geelong game during the season he would have been nominated. Fritch was a month too old.

That has left us with Petty, Sparrow, Chandler, Baker, Dunkley who have played for us this year who didn’t get nominations. I’d argue that none of them have really deserved one and usually you need some sustained form to get a nomination after Rd 11 and they have been in and out of the side.

We have plenty of players on our list who have had nominations in the past so not worried there. I’d want out number 2 pick to get the nomination in the first 5 rounds next year though!
