I can assure you..... we could

The series has been quite incredible DJ ... packed full of drama.  Just enough in the tracks to help the bowling but the good batsmen can still score centuries anyway.

Test cricket is at its best when the bowling is slightly favoured.  A century therefore scored by any individual is hard earned and often memorable.

I cannot get enough of it.

Archer seems a bit sharper tonight.  We'll need to keep him out but Broad is bowling really well too.

Now wtf was going on there? Head was giving it to Archer and sledging him......Lost concentration? Archer sure gave him a send off.

Jeepers that was quick.

Don't poke the bear hey?

Apart from all that,  Head isn't exactly the world's best batsman.  Deserved a send-off.

I just think if your sledging your not concentrating...i reckon he knows it too, judging by those dressing room shots

Barring rain we're going to see a result you'd imagine.  Still the equivalent of 5 sessions left with the time made up for the rain delays.

Interesting watching the odds change.....England were 40+/1....now theyre into 8.50..

Our Steve Smith has to hang tough here.

We need to counter attack here ... how you do that is anyone's guess.  But it's no good poking about against this quality bowling.

Got to hand it to them to come out fighting like that on a dead track. Not sure why they didnt do that in the first innings? The wind? Surely not downhill skiers.....

Just get the shine off the ball i guess...

600 runs for Smith this series. Amazing.

if Warner is going to hand over his wicket like that (double zeros this test) what can be expected of the remainder

200 is the target ... any idea of today's remaining overs/time

Interesting comparison ...

Mark Taylor scored 839 runs in the 1989 Ashes series in England.  6 Tests it must be said.

And Taylor was only in his 2nd year of playing Test cricket.

That was the start of Australia's dominance

259/4 at tea. You would take that i guess. Lyon needs to lift his game in the last innings...seriously.

When you look at it i guess Smiths got 600 in basically 2 games (4 innings) God knows if he had 12 innings what he would get.......amazing

The mid 70's were outstanding as well.  Others can go back further to the Benaud days.

Greg Chappell was still the best batsman to watch in my book and played against much better bowling attacks.  Smith is incredibly effective but so were Border & Steve Waugh.  Ponting was brilliant

It's unfair to split the 5 though.  They were all great.  And then there's Bradman.  And Harvey.  Victor Trumper?  Ponsford?

We could sure do with Taylor opening the innings atm. I cant remember consistently low opening partnerships as these...

Well I thought 359 was enough of a lead in the last test but it wasn't.  It's very difficult to do any projections in this series.

Expect the unexpected is what we can expect.  Along the lines of that known unknowns business Wadda.

The Thommo Lillee days were big but that Ashes series marked the start of perhaps what was the longest period of sustained domination by any team in cricketing history.

India have come close but at best they matched us,

Hard to compare earlier eras as they played comparatively few tests.

Indeed it is Macca.....

Theyre talking declarations on the tele.......gee youd be game. If Lyon was bowling a storm yes...but hes not.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
