Impressive that should net us a good KPB. Worth considering IMO.

Not a fan OD? With an ageing Pedo, Tmacs foot, Weids inconsistency would you still give up on Hoges? I do agree that we need an experienced KPD though

But he could be !

You don't dangle 23 year old key forwards on the market.  Josh Mahoney isn't a fool.

Oh come on, really?!?!

In Saturdays debacle he was ranked 13th out of 22 players. 14 disposals, 2 tackles and one goal. Not exactly the stuff of a champion forward in fact hardly the stuff of a good one. I reckon the FD would think about it. However it won't happen we are not daring enough. Re Mahoney not so sure about that he gave up a lot for a half back.

Well if we want something good we have to give up something and we have no first round picks.

Jeepers, OD. Did you watch the first half of the season? Jesse was a key contributor and often dominant. He's going through a slight down patch, but still contributing. In key position terms he's still young too.

Getting rid of Jesse would make us worse, not better. No deal.

What if we continue with no finals appearances because our back line is crap. Come the end of 2019 he might want out back to WA etc. deal might be better now and we are not going to win a flag with the current back line.

Enjoy the Gus has signed thread, head over to the “who should be “realistically” target at seasons end” thread.. you’ll fit right in.

Then how do we get a good KPB? Who else has currency ?

It is only a discussion cards it is not as though the FD takes any notice of us. Yep ok probably not on the right thread.

What do you mean what if? I thought you were being positive this season. Your argument is nonsensical mate, based on what ifs. Deal with what's in front of us. We're in 7th position. Jesse has been an integral part of that and until the midway point of the season, our 23 year old KPF was in AA contention and now you want him traded because he might want to leave in a year's time?

And how do we get a good KPB? We develop them and we certainly don't give away a good KPF (who are far rarer) in search of one.

It's such a frustratingly narrow-minded and dated view of footy too, OD. Is one full back going to make a difference to our defensive system? Have you watched footy in the last decade? It's about system. Our system needs to get better. If an undersized (IMO ordinary) Josh Gibson can win multiple premierships, that tells you something about the power of modern defensive systems.

I feel like I'm having a conversation with a really negative version of my father. :P

NEVER. IN. DOUBT. i see leadership potential in angus. not a fan of viney as captain. needs to work on his communication skills and still seems quite immature. tom mcdonald has also really impressed me of late. then we have lever too. we are blessed at the moment with so many young lions coming through. but as gus is my favourite player, i'd love to see him become co-captain/vice captain one day.

Jack is our Selwood. He just needs some continuity. Will be A grade if he can get on the park consistently.

as a player. not as a captain.

He is neither if he cannot get on the park.

He's new to the role. He'll make a great captain in time IMO.

This started out as what do we have to trade to get a good KPB. I was just wondering what he would be worth. Now you make some good points. Have I watched the football in the last decade ? Sadly most bloody weeks and as Mr Roos said earlier we as so easy to score against. No matter what system you have you need good players to implement it. Clearly as the results show our back line player stocks are not good enough. Now using Hogan may not be the best option but how do we get one or two good back line players if we don't trade a player for them.

I guess what I'm saying is logic should have ruled out Hogan as tradebait.

And I maintain that it's not a personnel issue (except the missing Lever and Hibberd), but a system error. I fear we put all our eggs in the one basket over the off season and built the system around one player (Lever). We tried to ensure everyone else in that system complimented him and so when he went down, it took us a few weeks to adjust and we've never quite recovered, especially with the injury to Hibberd, which has compounded the problem.

Our midfield needs to get better at its defensive running for longer though and our half forwards and deep forwards need to work harder for longer too, and lock the ball inside our 'territory'.

Forget going after an experienced KPB. It's not going to happen. Improve the system.

just to be clear, i have no doubt viney is passionate and will be a star of the comp once fit, i just feel that brayshaw would be better suited to the position and i like him better personally. each to their own. we're lucky we have both!

I love both players at their peak and they'll compliment each other. Gus may well make a really good leader in time too, but we'll agree to disagree on Viney as captain.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
