Saints only have 51 and 82 this year. They still need to bring in 3 from the draft. Maybe a rookie upgrade? Not sure, but I think they traded future picks as well.

They've sold the farm for those 5 players. Better work, or they are rooted for the next 3-5 years.

The thing is Moon that you get no return without risk. Their pick ups look good that’s all you can say. Our pickups look safe and reliable but they are not going to be a game changer. Individually the Saints pick ups are not going to bring them a flag but collectively they can make a big difference to outcomes.  Lynch for Richmond was a game changer but there few of his ilk. Most trades are just okay let’s face it. Unless you bring in a star into a team that is already  up there it’s shuffling deck chairs. In the whole good draft picks can maintain or improve the team’s competitiveness but it’s not going to bring you a flag. Lynch is the only one in recent years who arguably has done that.

Boyd! (Albeit only in the match that counted).

I would think that recruiting a player because his brother already plays for us would be right at the bottom of a list of good reasons to be chasing after somebody.

Agree. Would have been a nice move the year Dylan Grimes was in the draft, but...?

Ernest have a look at the trajectory of Langdons’s performances over his career.  It keeps going up. His stats overall virtually match Brad Hill’s some are better. His disposal is not as good but had been continually improving. His last month was well beyond Hill and up with Gaff quality. By the end of next season he will be looking like the steal of this trade period and will make a big difference to our ball movement and defensive transition. Don’t be sad be happy.

Thanks for your comments and insights. I admit knowing little about him and cannot even remember watching him on TV. I have watched Tomlinson and cannot get excited with his game. Hopefully, he will surprise me. Lets see whether your comments about Langdon being the steal of the trades turns out to be accurate. I hope they are. It will take me another month or two to emerge from my melancholy over the recent season and then hopefully I will see "a crack that's allows the light in." Apologies to Leonard.

I forced myself to watch some Freo games this year just to watch him because I had the feeling we were going to get him after trying last year. I hadn’t seen much of him before that either. I didn’t see the poor disposal many talk about. He didn’t dominate any of the games I saw but he’s a great runner and a good competitor. Bit as the seasons gone on he’s got better and better. As you say time will tell.

Actually thought if Zak Jones was coming back to Melbourne town, he’d have chosen us.  Saints must have the secret sauce as the new DESTINATION club. With a fistful of $$$s ?

The secret sauce is no stars, so no players who they've developed themselves who deserve good $$$ so they go out and pay a fortune for others. At least 10 of their best 22 come from other clubs, don't think there's ever been any premiership winners with anywhere near that amount of recycling

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
