"Garlett looked lazy and disinterested in the first half"

The ball kept getting plonked on top of his head and picked off by the taller defender.

Didn't really have much to work with

As I said in the point before that one. I don't blame him for not marking those shitty balls, but he gave us nothing defensively. I was really worried about what we had until he pulled his finger out in the second half.

Did anyone else think colin garland's efforts were absolutely deplorable?

Sold people into trouble, fumbled, lacked intensity... haven't seen a worse performance

Couldnt disagree more. His intensity throughout the game at the man with the ball was a great thing to watch. I'm talking about things such as running flat out at an opposition player who's been called to play on. He caused 50/50 contests and turnovers because of things like that and for supporters watching, that can be easily missed. It's the kind of thing Rioli, Puopolo, Ballantyne and Walters do. If Thursday night was any indication, he'll a huge pick up both offensively and defensively for us this year. Edited by stevethemanjordan

Yes.

Looked like he'd been hit by a train five mins into the first quarter. Gave away frustratingly obvious holding free kicks to his man, turned the ball over most times I witnessed him kick it. Even when there were players on. And he waltzed around as if in second gear. Saw no urgency from him whatsoever. For what many would term a 'seasoned and experienced defender', I honestly saw more positive signs from Frost in terms of competitiveness, mindset, willingness and freshness.

Someof these guys on our list who have been through the dark era seem absolutely shot.

I have to admit that I chugged quite a few beers at the "Sail and Anchor" pre game which obviously gave me an acute sense of who played well and who did not.

I was desperately disappointed by Gawn, Jamar, Grimes and M. jones. I reckon Gawny just had a very ordinary game and will offer more as the season progresses. Jamar - 11 years in the system and misses from 20m out, nothing more to be said.

I rate Matt Jones but in this game he really did himself no favours other than proving he his not AFL standard material. It's time we moved on from MJ and expect more from anyone we draft/trade into the side. MJ and Terlich doing so well in the Bluey a few years ago just goes to prove how thoroughly putrid the team was at the time.

Jack Grimes; [censored]-me-dead. When will this bloke rediscover his form and ability to play the rebounding HBF'r we know he can. So frustrating that a player can regress so much under what is clearly an improved development environment.

Ben Newton was an absolute steal. Got him for nothing and the bloke can play.

Garlett showed he's an AFL player will only get better as the season progresses.

Dawes - not convinced. Just does not have the footy smarts as you would usually see as evidence in general marking contests. Bringing the ball to ground is great but FFS, avoid the over processing and grab the [censored] thing like a man possessed from the get-go. He's been around long enough to perform better than he has been - 2014 season included.

Hoges will be a gem as the season progresses although he's going to get a lot of attention. It'll be interesting to see what tactics Roosy employs in order for Jesse to be competing in most F50 entries.

I still haven't watched the replay of the game yet and to be honest, Fremantle oval offers very little "elevated viewing" so it was difficult to form a decent opinion on play etc.

Not a bad start genarally , disliked knowing with ten minutes to go we wouldnt score for the remainder of the game and the quick panicked kick out of trouble resulting in a turnover.

Maybe a set play or 3 to break a deadlock as we watched in the last ten could be a way to hit the scoreboard .

6 POSITIVES

  1. Quick ball movement and switching during first half
  2. Jamar taking it up to and beating Will Minson who I rate highly
  3. Frost continuing to develop nicely
  4. Salems rebound across half back
  5. Tyson's game starting to go to another level
  6. Improved effort and intensity from Toumpas ( even though he faded like many 2nd half)

6 NEGATIVES

  1. We effectively played a second rate outfit who showed us up in the second half
  2. The over reliance on HOGAN already
  3. Jordy Mc Kenzie ( how he gets a game totally mystifies me)
  4. To a lesser extent Matt Jones kicking efficiency very average
  5. Is Colin Garland getting slower?
  6. We still haven't got a player who, when a game is up for grabs Or is in the balance can grab it by the scruff of the neck and create a matchwinning sequence ( IE A GAMECHANGER)

2024 Player Reviews: #36 Kysaiah Pickett

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc. When he’s on song, he’s unstoppable but he did blot his copybook with a three week suspension in the final round. 2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
