The New York Times online has just published this story about the Walpiri people and the birth of a new language.

There is nothing in the article about football or Liam Jurrah, but Demonlanders might be interested in understanding more about the rigours of living as a Walpiri. For example, I didn't know that in 1948 the Federal Government forcibly removed 550 residents of Yuendumu and relocated them to Lajamanu because of drought and overcrowding. And that twice those 550 residents walked back to Yuendumu only to be forcibly removed once again.

    It's not clear why a new language developed? Probably an attempt to be able to talk without the authorities understanding them.
