Just when you thought we may have been implementing cultural change

There was no compo for Byrnes, so he didn't cost us any picks. We did get a third round pick for Moloney and Rivers - though we (and most observers) thought we'd get a second round pick. I suspect clubs will be a lot more wary of FA next year, as everyone was expecting better compo.

"HAWTHORN has received no compensation for losing Tom Murphy to Gold Coast and only a third-round pick for the defection of Clinton Young to Collingwood.

Murphy, Shannon Byrnes (Geelong) and Chris Knights (Adelaide) were all deemed not worthy of compensation picks by the AFL.

The Hawks gained just pick 66 for their pair of losses, while the Saints and Port were the only clubs to rejoice the AFL's announcement tonight.

St Kilda picked up pick 13 for Goddard's move to Essendon, while Port Adelaide snared picks 30 and 31 for the loss of Troy Chaplin (Port Adelaide) and Danyle Pearce (Fremantle).

West Coast was handed pick 62 for Lynch's move to the Pies, while Melbourne was given just pick 49 despite losing Jared Rivers and Brent Moloney."

Thanks 'bing', so we picked up Kent with this pick or Jones. I guess it wasn't to bad then. I thought we might have lost out on this pick with Byrnes, not as a direct pick but where the formula cancels out picks.

Spots on the list Bing, that's what it's all about. BTW it doesn't take a great player to make the Melbourne team at the moment, what's more important is, how many of those mentioned would get a game with any other AFL side?

Or how many of them will still be playing in 3-5 years time.

Who gives a rats if players are seen laughing at recovery. Has anyone ever seen recovery? It isn't exactly a gut wrenching session. By Dermie's reckoning, no Melbourne player should ever be allowed to laugh until we win a game???

Haven't read this thread, but I only just heard this story reading posts on P1 and thought "what a stupid thing for Dermie to pick on... [censored]!"

Would it make you happier if I did?

Every now and then you actually post about the football.

No he doesn't.

I'm against any player that's on the list, biding their time, getting paid, and not putting in.

All I want is for the softness to be eradicated from the club, and to be able to go to the football knowing that the players are all on board and have respect for the MCF.

I don't want the club to replace one ordinary footballer with another that's worse, I don't want us to continue to tread water I want us to swim.

Of course we all are, I think.

& we've been soft physically since around the mid nineties, where flashy took over from the hard edge.

if you have a patient with cancer in a bone, you have to cut out the damaged tissue & then replace with healthy graft.

If we remove scarred old players, who have ingrained old ways, we also lose experience & mature bodies with them... so we can't replace them with more 18 yr olds.

you have to get some really solid citizens from good cultured stock.. GAblett jnr wasn't available & Judd wanted an ambassadorship with the foreign affairs dept upon retirement.

I wanted chappy & scotland, but scotland was in deeper crap than I realised.

Next year I'd chase Hodge, as he won't get as much from them, but he'll still probably stay there. LLLLeadership... invaluable.

We have to import the kind of attitudes we want ours to grow into, & it won't arrive on its own, flown in by a Stork.

I thought Trenners handled himself quite well at the presser when this and other issues were raised. I especially loved the way he stared down the journos questioning his leadership. Pretty sure he didn't blink.

I've certainly questioned the decision to place the captaincy on a kid his age, and I still do, but give him a few more years...I see alot of potential there.

I thought he handled it well too, albeit I thought it was a little unprofessional he didn't know that status of Dawes and Mckenzie given that info was published on the MFC website yesterday. I was a bit surprised he didn't have a mentor as captain. Surely David Neitz would fit the bill!

Agreed. It was interesting though not altogether surprising that his mentors didn't extend beyond the coaching staff. Once again this points to how useful it would be to have some ex players of Neeter's caliber around the club right now.
