Where to get your footy fix

Aussie 2 goals, 4 minutes in. He's just a bit too good at this level, footy smarts.

Thanks for the link, pretty good deal, being able to watch nt games on youtube.

3 motlops on one team! and cult figure relton roberts!

Thanks George. I didn't watch much of it because I didn't have the opportunity to watch it live but I found it as fascinating as the first time I watched the Tiwi Bombers in their inaugural year in the NTFL competition (2006/7) when games used to be televised on ABC2. I wrote about them here.

"The Tiwi Islanders might not be in AFL star class but they do play such an exciting, running game that it's often mind boggling. And what great cult heroes they're throwing up for the sparse audiences of this little known television station - names that roll off the commentators' tongues like Simon Munkara, Ephram Tipungwuti, Norman Pangirimini, Rupert Pupungameri, Thomas Simon and exciting youngsters Roy Farmer and Austin Wonaeamirri.

It's all high scoring excitement where the goals flow all day. The last game I saw was a close high scoring affair against Wanderers who were in it until halfway through the third quarter of a game played in 32 degree heat and 70% humidity. That was when the Wanderers started frothing at the mouth and running up and down on the spot while the Bombers running brigade kept zipping around, continually playing on at all costs and pumping through goal after goal. It seemed so effortless that I was reminded of the old Harlem Globetrotters basketball exhibitions. The Bombers eventually won a 48-goal shootout 28.15.183 to 20.8.128 and the players made it look so easy - as if they were born to play."

After a couple of years of this, someone in the ABC decided in his or her wisdom, to put an end to sport on that channel and I don't think anyone's watched it since.

After watching parts of the game yesterday, I can see how it would be hard for established players from the NTFL to acclimatise to the AFL game. They're in fact, worlds apart. The Top End game is fast, open, free flowing and attacking. By contrast, the AFL game is often the opposite with its emphasis on defence and the added requirements and demands this imposes on training, strength and fitness. The end result is that the NT games are often more enjoyable watching (and I would imagine playing) than the AFL.

WJ if you like way tiwi play, try and get a hold of the last grand final.

The full game is on YouTube - 2012 NTFL grand final.
