The Young Leaders

I've heard Neil Balme state that at Geelong the LG is very important in terms of support provided for the captain and the team. I'm sure they're good enough to withstand any sledging on the ground, and even hold their own. That said, 2012 will be a steep learning curve for the "Union Jack", as captains.

Perhaps that's why the LG is dominated by those who don't take a backward step, don't excessively fingerpoint, and have fantastic body language.

Batram, Frawley, Garland, Jones, and Jamar would exhibit the best of those traits I would say. Didn't follow Clark closely enough to assess his demeanour on field. From some reports he was a brat in Brisbane, from other reports he was a aggressive upstart. We will see.

good heavens old55, that will be the least of their problems

And what's going to be the "most of their problems"?

They'll be under extra pressure on field to perform and heavily sledged and physically targetted by the opposition - this goes straight to the point of whether they'll develop their own games slower or faster under this increased pressure. It will be up to the rest of the new leadership group to support them on field when this happens. It's not something we're famous for recently - but maybe Jamar, Clark and Frawley can help

It's amazing how Bartram has suddenly gone from whipping boy to 'one of the first picked' in lieu of this promotion. I love a battler as much as the next fan but until his heart-in-your-gob disposal improves (doubtful at this stage of his career) I view his position in the leadership group as much a Casey as a senior side role.

I think the club's actions would disagree with your view strongly. You don't pick leaders to play at Casey FFS.

It will be the true test of our club. Of course our new captains will be targetted. It's a brutal game AFL. Bring it on. It!s time we gave some back, both on the ground and on the scoreboard.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
