This second round has been incredible so far, playoff hockey is just brilliant!

Jets v Preds you just don’t know how many goals they will score.

Caps v Pens is hard edged, really hope the Caps can get over the top this time around.

Well done Nathan Walker. The first Australian player in the NHL to register a point in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Assisted in Washington’s first goal in game 6 against the Pens.

Caps and Bolts to Game 7 !

Would be nice if Ovi got the cup, thought the Caps were cooked after last year.

And it's now Vegas vs Washington in the final.  The absolute newcomer vs the team that has often exited early in the playoffs.

An unlikely match-up but here we are.

Game 1 is next Tuesday 10am and then Thursday 10am for game 2 with game 3 on Sunday week at 10am.  AEST.

Really looking forward to this final and the bookies have installed Vegas as $1.60 favourites.  I reckon it's line-ball but I'm leaning towards the Caps.

It’s been awhile..... Avs wowee! They are such an exciting team at the minute, especially if we can get back to full strength. Top 2 keepers and 2 of our 4 best players out (Maker is in that top 4 already :) ).

The last 2 years I’ve really fallen down a hockey rabbit hole and I love it. I listen to 5 hockey based podcasts every week, a couple of those post new episodes twice a week so it can be hard to keep up but fascinating, especially the fan based ones. The analysis they go into is incredible compared to Aussie based sports fans let alone media.

@Cards13 the new NHL playoff format is up and running . Good luck to your Avs, hope you smash the Blues.

Nice waking up to a Blackhawks win this morning. Playoff hockey won’t be the same without crowds but at least it’s another interest in this difficult year.

@Macca any tips ?

DZ.... what a win by the ‘Hawks, very interesting series coming up against the 2 headed monster.

The play ins are not of that much interest but getting going early will be a good sign for the Avs. I think Vegas with the addition of Lehner will tip them over the top, they look really good and adding a guy of that quality in net, wow.

I read somewhere that the NBA have instigated 'virtual' spectators DZ but I haven't seen any vision yet.  Worked well apparently.  Maybe Ice Hockey can go the same way!

No tips but in other news a TAB account (for those who have one) are showing all(?) NBA & MLB games live on their app (free) ... not sure about the NHL & NFL.

I'm more of a neutral with the Ice Hockey but I do like the match-ups between the long established teams (Montreal,  Toronto,  Boston,  Rangers,  Chicago,  Detroit & Pittsburgh.

Can we just go to Western Conf finals of Vegas vs Avs. How good would a 7 game series of this 2 be. Begs look like the best team in hockey right now, so much scoring depth and a legit top goaltender and what a number 2 in Fluery.

Hawks might have a say in that Cards ?. Looking forward to our series starting a little later. We have some top liners with a wealth of playoff experience, is that enough to see us through? Not sure. I think our key is Crawford, needs to have a huge series. Our problem wasn’t scoring during the regular season, allowing a lot of shots on goal against was.

We got the mix right against the Oilers but new ball game now.

Hawks are a bit like the AFL Hawks mate. Wonderful dynasty very much on the wane :) .

How is the Blue Jackets v Lightning game?!?!?! About to start the 4th OT!!! So as its in the bubble the 3 other games today in that one venue are pushed back.. They need 88 mins between each game for the ice to be redone too... The last game won't start until like midnight lol!!

Yeah insane, listening to the game through Blue Jackets radio. Lol, over 130 shots on goal so far not including the wide of net shots. Was hoping to catch Hawks game before work, looks like I’ll be recording and watching very late tonight.

Lol I listened to that for the last of the Leafs play in game, was great. Suck it Leafs.

Good luck Hawks. Going to be tough, Vegas look like finalists to me.

I'd forgotten about the playoff tips DZ ... to be honest I'm just catching up with the overseas sports.

I see Vancouver made the playoffs ... my cousin lives there and is a big fan.  So I lean towards them a bit but not with any great passion.  They might reach the last 8 with a bit of luck.

But the last 8 will see some excellent match-ups anyway.  Islanders,  Vegas,  Avs & Bruins are almost certainly going to feature.  Tampa as well by the looks of it.

Tamp v Bruins is going to be incredible hopefully.
Avs couldn’t keep the puck out in game one, even with Mackinnon being incredible! That first goal, holy shot!

Knights will win the cup I think, they look really good, even with “Flowers” agent trying to throw a spanner or sword into the  works.

What a strange season it’s been with multiple team covid outbreaks and shut downs, Dallas having a winter weather disaster shutdown and now teams offer fans free tickets to get vaccinated and looking to open up to as many fans as possible… and the finals starting while the Canucks are still finishing the regular season in the most meaningless way I think ever seen a season end in any sport.

Some of the match ups early look amazing across all divisions. Whoever plays the Wild, the battle of Floria, Wash v Boston (Chara back to face his old team with Wilson….) and Leafs v Habs just from a historical perspective (Leafs a chance to sweep them).

The Avs, if Grub can stay healthy are a chance to go all the way if they can get over Vegas and the punishment they dish out.

The NHL Finals start on Sunday at 10.00am between the Panthers & Oilers (best of 7)

Foxtel/Kayo are covering the games but picking up an audio broadcast of the games shouldn't be too hard a task

Interesting that Florida has never won the Stanley Cup whilst Edmonton has won the Stanley Cup 5 times

Players to look out for ... Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Sam Reinhart, Matthew Tkachuk, Evan Bouchard, Aleksandr Barkov & Zach Hyman

Footnote: The great Wayne Gretzky played in 4 successful Stanley Cup triumphs for Edmonton)

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
