Training Scheduling Question...

Featured Replies

Might be a really simple answer to this, but was wondering why the training sessions are/have always been morning times, ie 9.45am etc? In this modern age of sports science, wouldn't it make sense to train at 2-3pm every time so that bodies were conditioned to that time of day? Would that even work? Just thought it might be an option, especially with all the talk a couple of years ago about sleeping pills etc.. Thoughts?

They guys usualy have 2-3 seasons per day, the stuff we see is only a small percentage of what they do.

During the season you will find us training at the same time as games, to acclimatise to the time we play, however, how often do we play at 2:10 anyway! Games are all at different times, and as said previously, there are several sessions a day of training.

I dont think training at a specific time to adapt to the same time as game day is as relevant as it used to be due to the fact games are all over the place. If we played every game at 2:10 then it would be a good training principle to follow, but as we dont, it may not be as important to the schedule.

What about when the weather starts to really warm up? Is it beneficial to train in the hottest part of the day? I ask out of general curiosity.

Depends on what you are trying to train for, but I would say most of the fitness gurus would say it would be not beneficial to train during the hottest periods of the day, on purpose at least. If it happens to be hot when training is scheduled then they would train, but probably a shorter and sharp session. If they know they are going to be playing in Darwin and/or Perth/ GC they may want to do some of it to be prepared for the conditions though.

I'm going to be in town in early January.

How do I find out the times and venues for training?

I would presume that two of the best fitness/sports science guys in Misson and Craig would know how to schedule training and monitor the boys continuously.

I'm going to be in town in early January.

How do I find out the times and venues for training?

To find out training times either look up the website- melbournefc, go to season 2011 at present, in January it will be 2012 season, go then to training times where it will state where and times,Or ring the club.

Regards & have a great Xmas

Maybe its best to train out of the heat of the day. I think conditioning the body to certain times in the day is taking sports science a bit too far.

AFL players on sleeping pills I think is more an anxiety thing related to them not sleeping before games and then not sleeping after (which might be due to either the natural rush of playing an AFL game or an artificial one caused by caffeine).

Training under lights has been thought of and done (but I dont think consistently over a period) before to get used to lights. I'm wonder how much benefit it is and for a team who doesn't play a lot of night matches it probably isn't a lot. Might be worth a go before night matches especially in winter where you can train under lights without it being late at night.

That's why Misson and Craig are experts and would know a lot more than all of us combined... I'm sure they have it sussed. My team trained under lights for 4 years and won 4 daytime premierships... It's all in the head really.

To get them out of bed and leading a normal 9-5 lifestyle as opposed to playstation and the casino.

Yes, i'm serious.

Whilst they dont all need prompting, many do.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
