2011 Player Review - # 42 Jake Spencer

Featured Replies

That is the most optimistic analysis of a player I have ever seen.

It would be akin to saying 'If we moved Lynden Dunn on, he could be the next Brendon Goddard'.

Ridiculous.

That's my opinion, you don't have to agree with it.

The Goddard bit is somewhat childish though.

Erm, no it wouldn't. Dunn is fully developed and obviously inadequate at AFL level. Spencer still has a lot of development left in him. He may not reach the heights of Jolly, but the chances are he'll want to go looking for new opportunities elsewhere as Jolly did, and will probably make it away from the club, as Jolly did. The comparison is fair from that perspective.

To be perfectly honest, he's wasting a spot on the list.

Will not be here in 2013, unless something unbelievably ridiculous happens, and I do not see that happening.

It is often harsh and unreasonable to call opinions stupid...but by the grace of sweet baby jesus it is temping.

Spencer is developing well. He is a competent VFL level ruckman now and has further scope for development. You need 'spare' ruckmen on a list and he does this. So he isn't 'wasting' a spot at all. Further, clubs will pay for competent ruckman. Just look at the last draft. It is a benefit to the club in every way that we develop spencer: either he'll be good for us or help us get someone good.

There is zero waste. He definitely does not 'clog up' the list.

If he moves on he may be our next Darren Jolly, he can play a bit and is very aggressive.

I have had Spencers back all year as well, he is only 22, and for those who havnt seen him in 18 months, alot wont have this guy is Huge now, as big as most AFL ruckmen and bigger than others, he is no longer "spencil".

And saying he is wasting space.... we were 1 ruck injury away this year of making Gawn the number 1 ruck as a 19yo.... i cvan see a use for this guy, also commenst about his and Gawns form for Casey are 100% accurate to the game i saw them play in person, took apart North Ballarats and Victorian State rep Ruckan Stephan Orrenson that day imo, both were to big.

Jake isnt an AFL ruckman yet, but could well become one, the Jolly analogy is quite good, probably a little off atm but Jake has another 3 years until his "prime", i was looking forward to seeing him after jamar got injured...unfortunately Spencer did the same that weekend.

To many people can only remember the Spencer for 2009 not now, where were we all back in 2009? a very different place and different people to a degree i imagine.

List clogger.

Harsh but true.

I don't see how a 22 year old ruck can be a 'list clogger'?

Frankly, I think this term is overused but if he was 27 and not developing then he may be a 'clogger' ie. someone getting in the way of others development, but he is no Brock McLean; he is not keeping anyone out of the ruck for Casey and was incredibly unlucky to be injured the same weekend as Jamar. I believe he may have played AFL footy had he stayed injury free.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
