Compo Picks Idea - Trade with GWS!

First of all, I think the club has done a fantastic job getting Clark for pick 12. He definitely fills a need and is still fairly young so should be in his prime when we are peaking.

However, now that we have traded pick 12 we don't enter the draft this year till the second round. Even with all the youngsters we've got coming through, I still feel we're 2 or 3 class midfielders short from building a premiership midfield. Obviously we've got Viney coming in next year which is great as he looks like he's going to be a gun and we've also got the 2 compo picks.

I suggest that we swap one of the compo picks (either one not too fussed as I think they'll end up being fairly close if we finish between 7-10) for a pick from GWS this year between 7 & 12. I can't see why GWS wouldn't do it as they've already got a monopoly on the 1st round this year. This would allow us to get a quality midfielder in our system this year (there's definitely going to be 1 available around that pick) that we can put twelve months development into. .

To be honest I think it's a no brainer that works for both parties. Even after the trade we'll still have Viney and another 1st rounder next year.

What are peoples thoughts?

    "After 1st round pick" to goldcoast for Caddy, keeping the "mid 1st round pick" for 2012 draft (as it will probably be higher, albeit not by much).

    It would certainly be in GWS's interest to swap some of their picks this year for picks they can use in the next 5 years. Having picks 11-14 in the one draft has big risks. Let's say it was a 2003 draft, the GWS would get

    So swapping a first round comp picks for say a pick between 7 and 10 would be a good get for us and be smart for GWS

    Haven't you just proved exactly why we should hang onto the compo picks for either a strong draft, or trade them for an established player, or at least a relatively know quantity?

    As opposed to pick 7-10, that could garner us such names as Tenace, Clarke, Trotter or Dunn?

    We are well positioned to use both compo picks next season. Either in the draft or to snare a player like Pendlebury or Gaff.

    These picks should now be untouchable. As far as GWS. Stuff them!

    No I disagree. My point is that GWS are unlikely to get 11 stars. There will be some duds for sure. They will therefore be likely to trade 1 or 2 picks away to spread their risk. For us, if we get pick 7 this year or next year it doesn't make much difference risk wise. But we get the chance to participate this year in the top 10 which would otherwise be off limits for us.

    Maybe the compo picks are worth significantly more because of their flexibiilty. Thinking about it further, GWS are likely to finish last next year. Therefore the compo picks will be like pick 1 or 2 to them and only pick 13 or 14 to us. So for us we can improve dramatically our position this year and next. I think it makes real sense.

    Here's a thought. Maybe they trade pick 3 to us so that we can get O'Meara and trump the GC17!!

    GC can't be trumped on O'Meara they have MD 1.

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
