I cannot believe the senseless spite and ridiculous statements being made about Brock McLean. He was likely to be our next skipper because of his attitude to footy, his leadership character, and his ability to inspire his team mates. Read over a lot of the posts from this year and so many of us have used the words "grunt, ticker, heart, passion etc..." Brock has heaps of these. Just becasue he no longer wears our great jumper doesn't mean he has lost all his best attributes.

Is he slow? Very

IS the Gysberts trade a good win for us? Absolutely

Is he worthwhile? Very

Carlton are mad for not making him a regualr part of their starting 22. Slow, smart, courageous, inspiring, grunt players are the heart and soul of premiership teams - the ones who set up and make Judd, Ablett, Rioli, Goodes, Cousins look great. Guerra at Hawthorn. Hunt at Geelong. Bolton at Sydney. Hart at Brisbane. If Carlton give Brock 70% game time leading into the finals he will rise again to the level of two years ago and become invaluable.

If he gets de-listed, I would definitely be open to re-drafting him, but (and just like the Duchess of York, a very big but) I am unsure if Bailey and Jimmy would want a player who walked out during our difficult years.

The last thing we need is another player who can't kick the ball to add to our collection. Never sinks in does it.

Brock can kick - I don't see this as one of his deficiencies. He can't kick past 45 metres but that is the same for lots of footballers. If you reckon he can't kick then 3/4 of AFL players can't.

Well 3/4 of our players cant. Brock rarely could hit a target at any distance. Our deficiency in this aspect of the game has been exposed time after time and continues. Just watch our last game replay and compare the Hawks kicking efficiency against ours.

It was a fair effort after a long stint out but he remains a fringe player at Carlton. He's a smart footballer with physical limitations in today's modern game. At least he has a chance to play finals football again and there's no benefit or reason for Demon fans to be mean spirited about him now. He's just another player at an opposition club.

Totally agree WJ. I also think some people are far too quick to forget how generous Brock was to Debt Demolition. IMO, his decision to move on was more because he knew that he was slipping behind in the mid-field pecking order at Melbourne. We shouldn't crucify him for that! It's just a case of a player whose body has let him down far too often, and whose skill-set is being surpassed in the modern game.

It's a complicated issue, basically due to his selfishness he decided to leave the club, however his decision will end up benefiting the team in the future.

McLean's days were number under Bailey. He was struggling for fitness and form at MFC in his last 2 years. In his final year he was given tagging roles. With the onset of Scully, Trengove and the likelihood of other young mids, his window was narrowing. He was also coming out of an expensive contract which the Club re offered with a substnatial haircut in salary to reflect his fall in stature. He rightly sought his opportunities elsewhere and Club obliged.

And you have now added to them. In his final 2 years, McLean was no where near the captaincy. And as time went on he was drifting further way with every mediocre performance provided.

Surely the answers you provided to your own question would show you Carlton are far from mad. McLean's spot has been taken by a raised rookie Curnow. Slow players need to strong in other areas of their game to compensate. McLean is not strong by hand or foot. The players you mention have compensating strengths. McLean does not show that and has not for 5 years. And his form 2 years ago was mediocre and he needs to lift about that. And he wont be getting Blues game time without injuries and if he continue to give off limp tackles like he did last night on Cunnington.

And MFC is not a charity and there is no sensible reason to draft him. And its self serving to think McLean just walked out. The parting was clearly mutual.

Ah yes, the myth of McLean digging deep into his pockets to save the poor old struggling MFC....pigs arse, and it's amusing seeing so many people fall for it. McLean's 'donation' was the result of his breaking of team rules and the resultant leadership group's choice of his punishment. Nothing more, nothing less.

Bailey was playing him in a negating role and he didn't like it, he was unable to let go of his huge ego and sacrifice his game and play for the team, he clearly felt that he was above Bailey's plans and was seduced by the Carlton offer of guaranteed game time and more money. Of course, the irony of all this is that hes had fewer opportunities at Carlton, and with their group of young platers coming through they will continue to decrease. It's also becoming less likely by the week that his contract will be extended over, they need the cap sapce for regular players who aren't injury prone.

Bailey realised McLeans limitations and wanted to play other options in the midfield. Its theatrics to claim he sulked. He sought out other options and wanted to go elsewhere. MFC obliged.
