I've wanted to start an MLB thread for quite a while, but have never really got around to it.

I suppose it's because I felt that with 2430 games per season (plus playoffs) per season, it'd be too hard to keep up with. But I thought I may as well make it and see what happens.

Personally, I'm a White Sox fan. Hoping we can get to the top of our division on the back of a good hitting lineup.

Unfortuantely 3 times already we've lost in the 9th/10th inning after leading. We're currently 5-5 in the top of the 10th.

Anyone else keen?

Big MLB fan. As fas as the "Big 4" Pro sports in the states go I am pretty die hard.

I am however a long suffering Pirates fan. Yes, I know they suck, but so do the Demons so you can understand why it is hard to leave a lovable loser.

Yes, it is a long a tedious season. Will Pirates play playoffs this season? Nope.

Will the Sox? Maybe

Happy to discuss MLB anytime.

You follow the ABL??

Since posting this thread we've lost 6 on the trot.

I follow the ABL a bit mate, just found it a bit hard to get to (soft, I know, but the passion isn't really there for a team that's existed for one season).

Good fun there though, did you go along?

yeah, I have a reserved seat for the Aces. Worth the travel.

Speaking of losing trends, my Pirates are now 4 games below .500 Not looking good.

Would it be wrong to jump in here and be a happy little Indian fan?!!!

Cleveland Indians QueenC?? I hope you are referring to "Wild Thing's" Cleveland Indians from movie 'Major League' and not the Cleveland Indians currently dominating the AL standings!!

I met a bloke from Independence Missouri in NZ a couple of years ago. He complained about his dreadful baseball team and I whinged about the Dees, we had more than a few Speights together (I think that was the name of the beer) and we ended up swapping caps so, for better or worse, I 'root' for the Kansas City Royals. And the Royals, who've come last in their division the last few years, got done 19 - 1 by the Indians the other day; there's not been much 'better' to the deal really. I wonder if the bloke I met is on a baseball site at the moment posting about his favourite AFL team. I doubt it.

The Royals actually have a strong connection with Australia. In 2005 Melbourne's Justin Huber was drafted (now plays in the ABL for the Melbourne Aces) and I have heard that we may see an KC pitcher play down in the ABL next season due to strong ties with the Royals and the Melbourne Aces management. The ABL is great if you haven't been so get on it baseball fans.

I don't mind the Royals, they are not that bad. And they did win it all in 85, unlike the Demons who haven't raised silverware since 64...............

Oh, and Speights Brewery is a ripper in NZ! Can't find it here, but would be keen to get on it again if anyone knows where it can be bought.

Well it started with the movie, but I love Cleveland, not the city so much although I do sympathise with the Browns and the Cavs......

But the Indians, yep definitely my guys!!!

I'm heading to Tampa to watch the Rays and the Red Sox in July...will be supporting the Rays....

If both sides continue winning that could be a ripper of a game. Going to be a vital clash between divisional rivals. Yankees still lead the division, but Rays and Sox are right behind them!

Shame you are not going in late August or early September, you could have squeezed in an NFL game in Tampa (barring lockout of course.......)

No NFL action for me, but I did catch Orlando Magic and the Atlanta Hawks during the playoffs...Magic had a good win on the night, but a real pity they couldn't support big Dwight over the course of the series!

Yeah but the Sox just got knocked by the Tribe in the first of their series..... Woo Hoo :) !!!

As with the NFL, I follow Philly...

I can't believe we landed Lee in the off season. Makes no sense at all. The more I think about it, the more it seems they're like the Collingwood of American sports. Small place to the north of the most important city... Parochialism and love of the common man has turned them into a powerhouse in football. And the Phillies have had little success for many, many years, but are now one of the favourites for the world series, and have been for the last 3-4 years.

Love me the big 4, Doc Halladay, Hamels, Lee and Oswalt. Not bad closers and set-up guys in Madson and Lidge. But it's our offence that has me worried. When you don't address your issues, they multiply... and we've had injuries, and can't hit to save ourselves. We only have the second best record in the MLB because of our league-best pitching rotation.

45, what are the big 4 sports? NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL?

NFL has now probably taken over Cricket as my second favourite sport. Baseball's a fair way down the list though. Ok sport, lots to think about, but the inequity is frustrating, and the length of the season, while not something they'll ever change, is just too much. I only start really thinking about it after the all-star game. Maybe when they get to the last 3-40 games of the season, when magic numbers start appearing on the standings.

Big Redsox fan, but the nation took a hit with the steroid scandal, and so did the nation in my heart...

But Pedroia and Ellsbury keep me going.

That and the pure unadulterated arrogance of Josh Beckett.

Decent season this one - giving NY the run around.

How do you guys find time to watch so much sport?

Well I work from home and baseball, not unlike cricket, is good background noise!!!

You work from home?!

You Bit-ka!

If you got that, you are a huge Buffy fan.

How do you guys find time to watch so much sport? It seems to be the same people participating in all the "other sports" threads. I barely get time to watch one game of AFL footy a week. If I could squeeze in a couple of others I reckon Baseball would be a fair way down my list.

I don;t watch so much of it... I catch up over the net though.

Oh yeah I got that  .....

Phillies looking dominant. A lazy 9 in the 8th...

Holy freaking [censored].... That would have to be one of the great World Series games ever wouldn't it?

Great call by Joe Buck. See you all tomorrow night.

Certainly since I've been around.

Being one strike away from losing the series ..... twice ...... and getting crucial hits to stay in the game. Cruz should really have gone harder at that fly ball. If he takes it the Rangers win the whole thing and he can spend the whole winter getting a bruised arm better.

As it is, he squibbed it and now they have to face Carpenter in game 7 with a depleted bullpen, away to a team than now has all the momentum. Sometimes you just have to go when it's your turn. He didn't and it could cost them the whole thing.

Great game. It had everything.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
