Melbourne Captain Announcement [Merged]

No one could say that his strong leads into withering traffic exhibited in his first season were soft. He was wasted playing out of position for too many years. He was and still is a strong lead up forward with great skills and not a jack of all trades midfielder.

I remember a game a few years back when Neitz was injured and Green was captain for the day. It was a close game (can't remember against who) and at 3/4 time Green took the group over to near the fence for their last huddle before taking their positions so the players could hear the crowd's motivational chants and cheers. I thought that was a fantastic display of leadership and also of thinking outside the square. Hopefully he comes up with other ways to get best out of his young team! Go Booga!!

Green's been my nomination for years so I'm happy (not that I know what any of the guys are like behind closed doors in the footy environment, but hey).

Dramatics a side that is not the measure that was taken to challenge Green's hardness at the ball. He was hardly subject to phyiscal pressure on the lead by the very nature of the action. There were posters identifying his reluctance to the contest early in his career.

He was wasted playing out of position for too many years. He was and still is a strong lead up forward with great skills and not a jack of all trades midfielder.

This is not relevant to whether he would make the contest for the ball. He will continue to be used to pinch hit up forward and on the wings. He won the Bluey and almost AA last year playing this way so he is certainly not restricted to the one role.

Contests brad...

Now let's review the trolls from five years ago where people said he was soft... Pretty funny how wrong our resident keyboard heroes can be...

This was the right choice... But at the same time you feel for Beamer and Aaron...

5 Years ago, he was.

“(The) one thing that the Melbourne Football Club have had over their past three captains in James McDonald, David Neitz and Todd Viney is all of them had an unflinching commitment to the footy.”

“And Brad’s developed that into his game over the years and he’s mastered it and he’s a super-courageous player.”

Green broke through for his first All-Australian guernsey last year following a stellar season that saw him average over 19 touches a game and kick a career-high 55 goals.

But Lyon believes his recently-acquired toughness played more a part in his appointment than any individual honours may have.

“He had a broken jaw (in 2009) and in his very first game back he ran with the flight of the footy in a breathtaking display of courage and I think that rubber-stamped him as a footy player,” Lyon told Triple M.

“He’s always had terrific skills and been a beautifully-balanced footy player but he’s added this really hard, tough edge.”

Not to jump the gun like I did with McLean, but Green's appointment (which is also a wise decision on its own), paves the way for a smooth transition into a Grimes captaincy in 2-3 years time.

No.... that's not jumping the gun at all... :P

Still can't believe some people think Grimes is a lock for the next captain. We have many candidates.

Did I say he was a lock? I just said it paves the way nicely in terms of Green's age and timing. Incidentally it paves the way nicely for any other player in the same age/experience bracket who you feel may be a good candidate (I'm assuming Scully :P), so pipe down! B)

That sounds like a presumed "lock" to me.

Still jet lagged Jaded? Inhaled too much volcanic ash on your travels? :P

What part of "not to jump the gun" do you not understand?

I'll use simpler terms next time for you :P

No, that's right there is no such thing as a "lock" and we do have candidates for down the track. That said, we do have favourites. Much can happen in 3 years, but Grimes looks the man for it.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
