Jay Neagle

Says in the paper that Jay Neagle was delisted. I don't really watch too many Essendon games very closely so I can't comment on his abilities too much. But high hopes were once held for him. Does anyone know what led to his delisting? Sounds like it must be attitude problems as he was dumped after "failing to impress" James Hird.

He is training with the Bombers, has 4 weeks to prove he's still keen. If not out - open to us to draft of course should we want.

Interesting one. He's young (23 yo) but has had a few years in the system and a developed body. Multiple injury setbacks. Maybe needs a bit of a jolt like this. It would be a good story if they rookied him and he worked hard to make it back on their list (he was a father-son selection so would be nice). Interested to hear if anyone here thinks he's worth us punting on as a KPF. Personally I'm not so interested but as I said, I don't get to see him play much.

Neagle made Ben Holland look like Carl Lewis. Seriously Ive never seen a more lazy not fit for AFL player given such a dream run of adulation and expectation over the last 3 years merely due to his surname and height/weight on paper. The guys an A-Grade spud, if he couldnt flourish in that Essendon forward line this year when he was supposedly fitter than ever before, what makes anyone think he'd succeed at our or any other club?

The midfield getting the footy to him is rubbish...

But everything that's been said of him in this thread still stands.

Agree that everything said here still stands ... BUT ...

I don't think we need a great player up forward .. I think we need a big bodied forward who can create a contest. Neagle does fit that bill. While he isn't necessarily quick or agile, I don't think he would be the worst player we could get. He takes another tall defender, which frees up Watts and LJ. I think he's worth a look at the very least.

I'm not sure that he does.

He could be taller and he doesn't contest much.

I'd go as far as saying I don't think he offers anything more than Newton.

Possibly even less.

As an un-ashamed NON-fan of Newton, I will disagree with you there. Nobody offers less than Juice. If he proves me wrong, brilliant .... but if that happens, the grass will be blue and the sky green.

Have to disagree - E25 is spot on. At least Juice looks decent back at VFL level. Both have looked NQR in the AFL to date but Neagle would struggle for a regular game at Casey. I would say that, within reason, he IS just about the worst player available to take that key forward spot.

Whether Newts has the talent of Neagle is debatable but Newts has show more desire to chase, tackle and put his body on the line than what I have seen of Neagle. Says a lot for where Neagle is at.

Would be an interesting story though...

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
