If Goodell has viewed the "2nd" video as early as April this year, he's in trouble.

It would then almost certainly involve a cover-up and given the nature of the incident, it would be viewed as a terribly poor piece of judgement on his part.

A lot of the lobby groups have a lot of strength in the US and rather than being sacked, I can see him resigning if the above scenario was to be proven.

Goodell has come out and said that he hasn't viewed the video until now so not only might there have been a cover-up, the denials would be damning as well.

Of course, if he hasn't seen the 2nd video until now, questions would have to be asked about why he hasn't seen the video previously. A man in his position can't afford to be negligent or incompetent considering what the 2nd video revealed.

A lot is going to depend on whether the tape was actually sent to the NFL and whether it was viewed at the time (by the NFL)

and this ... Sources: Rice told NFL he hit fiancee

Yup. That's it in a nutshell... most of the podcasts I've been listening to deal with the fact that most can't believe that an organisation with the power the NFL has COULDN'T have seen the video. ie, they were in a Casino where there's cameras everywhere. I don't quite see that. If they were informed this is the video that contains all the details, they may not have even asked for more footage. So at the VERY least, it seems perhaps incompetent.

And yeah, Rice saying he struck her... is that the same thing as this video, which is just so freaking appalling?

The other thing in CFH's video that was interesting was the accusation that Rice's wife was interviewed with Rice present, which goes against all current procedures to do with counselling and spousal abuse.

After being on this for a few days, I'm hoping that Goodell doesn't get the arse. He came out and admitted fault and instantly changed the NFL's procedure. So under him, change is being brought about.

Then again, I'm in Australia. What do I know.

Yeah here we go again...

Oh bugger

I don't know how to feel about this. AP is my all time favourite player from any sport. From what I understand it was a disciplinary act on his child not abuse and it is common down south for kids "to get the switch". AP has a very rocky relationship and one jury had already agreed that no charges be laid but now a grand jury has done a back flip. I don't wanna get into a spanking argument. I'm a parent I don't but it was done to me and more as a kid. What I really don't get is AP testifies to a grand jury over disciplining his child and Ray Rice knocks his wife out and has a press conference.

Whilst I don't feel sorry for AP, I do feel for the Vikes fans such as yourself.

I can only imagine how I would feel if it were Rodgers instead. Hopelessly conflicted and not wanting to believe it's true plus, the natural reaction is to try and play it down.

The Rice thing complicates matters but if Rice had been dealt with properly at the time, this latest episode with AP would be a lot more clearer. As it stands, Peterson is in fair bit of strife, regardless.

I don't always know how all these things work in the States ... First or 2nd time PED users carries with it only a 4 game penalty and a 2nd time marijuana user can cop a whole season.

Yeah I can see both sides to this story. On one hand I am the fanatical AP fan who can do no wrong and his actions were those of a parent but when I attempt to look at it with no bias he is in a lot of strife. Goodell must want to hit the reset button on the season. I think AP is done though and the Rice situation will hinder AP. There is no way the nfl don't come down hard on my sporting idol. They just changed the drug policy as well. Looks like all those dope heads might only miss 8 games.

... Poll mixed on Goodell keeping job

and again, the TV games ...

Monday

3.00am - 9.30am RedZone (ESPN ... "Every Touchdown From Every Game")

3.00am Detroit at Carolina (7mate)

6.30am Kansas City at Denver (7mate)

10.30am Chicago at San Francisco (7mate & ESPN)

Tuesday

10.30am Philadelphia at Indianapolis (ESPN)

... All the week 2 games

and ... The BS Report (podcast with Bill Simmons)

The most interesting of the TV games for me is the Eagles/Colts match-up. I give KC a sneaky chance as well and if Detroit are going to step it up, they need to win games like these @ the Panthers.

Me, I'm already hooked on redzone ^_^

I'll try to avoid all scores, get home tomorrow and watch the Rams game then another game.

I'm looking forward to the eagles game.

Trying to avoid any of the scores is turning into an artform for me ... I've banned at least 3 people from texting or ringing me on a Monday (that is absolutely true by the way - I'm hard work sometimes) Other people I know who have a bit of an interest in the sport know not to blurt out results.

Then there's the radio, work colleagues, internet, this thread, being extra careful with the TV .. it's hard work and it takes a great deal of concentration ^_^

Anyway, here's Bill Simmons' latest column ... The Sports Guy’s Week 2 NFL Picks

Falcons (+5) over BENGALS

Just a classic Falcons performance last week — Matt Ryan threw the crap out of the ball, they kept fighting back against the Saints, Mike Smith’s clock management was as hideous as ever, and it ended up being one of those anyone-could-have-won games. I think that’s their destiny; the Falcons are this year’s RedZone Channel Ending team. Grabbing the points only because of the overwhelming Garbage Time Touchdown Potential.

Bears (+7) over NINERS

Your textbook Week 2 overreaction line: In Week 1, the Niners looked better than they are (mainly because Dallas sucks and Romo was abysmal), and the Bears looked worse than they are (mainly because Buffalo might be sneaky-good). As Rob in West Haven writes, “Any chance that Week 1 was one of Jay Cutler’s Moron Games? He’s good for two per year.” Exactly. Cutler usually doesn’t have back-to-back Moron Games. That’s why I am making the Bears my Week 2 Upset Special: Bears 34, Niners 30.

Saints, Cardinals, Seahawks for the tips

Bears won't win. Defense can stop run and particularly running Qb's, receivers are injured and O line have concerns. They fit the bounce back from a poor week one narrative but not v the niners

What I really don't get is AP testifies to a grand jury over disciplining his child and Ray Rice knocks his wife out and has a press conference.

Ray Rice went through the courts as well. The press conference gets over played. And Goodell may a horrendous mistake saying 2 weeks. But before Goodell it was open season for NFL players and crime. He's tried to tighten the drugs and personnel code up but just made things worse. Caught out dealing like Demetriou. He's a lawyer but he's not a judge. So he hears the Rice's version of the story, sees Ray as an overall remorseful decent human and dishes out a light punishment. If Goodell turned the player suspensions over to an independent former judge or attorney he might be on to something as a real system.

As for Peterson, well I guess just because something is right in the south doesn't mean it's ok for Exempt for NFL charges. The photos are disturbing and so are the texts to his baby mumma. I get he's the Viking fans hero, but at 12-15mil his contract was too big anyway.

So back to the NFL.... how about these top line RBs? Jamaal Charles out, AP out, Lynch quiet so far today... And the next gen guys lifting like Ingram. How good was Murray?

  • Author

What's the bigger news so far though? RG3 and DJax both hurt, and Cousins tearing Jacksonville a new one? Or is it the Jets killing Green Bay? Or maybe even bigger Rivers rolling Seattle?

We've got half our team out. Might as well lose Charles too. We should still end up getting flogged today, but it's been a gutsy effort thus far.

Chiefs fan eh? They were going pretty hard... But Manning looks like he's gonna Manning this game unfortunately.

Cousins should be a starting QB in the NFL. He is no Brady but he can throw. Vikes had no chance throwing 4 picks and having a blocked FG going for a TD. I'm not beating the bring on bridgewater drums yet but I have dusted them off. Cassel will start next week. Geno just couldn't kill off the packers he had his chances though. Saints are 0-2 and Carolina are 2-0. Surely the saints will catch up. The biggest story for me is the bills. 2-0 I would not have picked that. EJ Manuel looked like he had no rythm coming into the season but they are undefeated. Anything is possible go bills.

Yup. He'll earn himself a starting job somewhere by season's end. Look at RG3's ankle on replay. Ouch.

Pretty impressive by Bears.... even with all the penalties helping them.

Did kap really get a flag for bad language?

Did kap really get a flag for bad language?

Didn't see? Probably. They were flagging you for pretty much everything.

Did kap really get a flag for bad language?

Yep. Guess with the ref's miked and the players often sound wired they can do it. But no one in the crowd's going to hear it! Silly. Just additional yards after the pick though so hardly a huge penalty.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
