Alright yank sports fans...

Is there going to be a season this year?

Tentative word is, yes...

Yeah they'll get there eventually....

By all accounts (via ESPN) they aren't too far away discussion wise, but no definitive move has been made and the lockout is obviously still in effect.

Most of those "insiders" that trot out their opinions don't think that the season will be held up and that a deal of some kind will be in place before the first scheduled practice games.

That being said it looks a little chaotic from the outside with splintered playing groups in randomly organised workouts.

Strange really, especially for the rookies some of whom are the ones organising (and paying for) their more senior counterparts to actually do some team training.

It did? That'd be a first. So the season is 16... that's 6 games between you and your division rivals... then you'll play all the teams from 2 different divisions... and those two divisions are selected from both conferences. After that, there's two more games selected, though I don't know how they're selected. So for example, for the Eagles who are in...6 vs NFC East teams. These are the big ones.

4 X NFC North teams. That's a Division in the Eagles' own conference.

4 X AFC South teams. That's a division OUTSIDE the NFC's conference. These are SLIGHTLY less important, as you're unlikely to need a tie breaker where your record against these teams matters.

2 X games against one team from the remaining two divisions. So the only two divisions in the Eagles' conference they haven't played are NFC South (Falcons) and West (49ers).

^^ this is 100% correct. the two games 'in which he didnt know how are selected' are selected like the following:

The eagles already play NFC NORTH as an intra-conference division. in 09/10, i believe the eagles came 2rd in their division, this means they play rival teams from the SAME conference which also came 2rd in their division, the following season. ie falcons (2nd in NFC S) & 49'ers (2nd in NFC W)

i hope this helps.

That's awesome. Hence this year where we play Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks as all won their divisions, as did the Iggles...

So we play both our division rivals twice (6 games), then everyone from the NFC West once (4 games), everyone from AFC East once (4 games) and then, as you say, the winners of the two remaining divisions of our own conference (NFC division champions Bears and Falcons = 2 games)...

I like it. Makes my head hurt, but I like it. Kind of like a complicated seeding program there, where the best play the best every year.

The more I see it, the more it makes our own scheduling look amateur.

Just found this thread!

I really hope they work out a deal and get some kind of free agency period in place before the start of a season. Been watching ESPN sports center most nights when I know theres been movement but all it really amounts to is owners making deliberately obfuscated statements, players reps trying to remain upbeat, and images of athletes getting out of their luxury cars to work out solo. Not exactly compulsive viewing.

Like Queenc, I'm a mad 49ers fan. Have been since the glory years in the mid 80s when Don Lane used to host. Its been a lean patch for us since Steve Young retired. In fact you can make parallels between SF and MFC, a long period of dominance, followed by an even longer period of mediocrity, with a new era being led by a #1 pick (Smith=Watts) whose performance did not meet expectations early in his career.

Excited by Jim Harbaugh as coach, anyone will be better than Singletary, and lets hope the enigmatic Alex Smith (who already has the new coaches playbook to study) can finally click. Another A-grade wide receiver would be nice.

Favorite athelete to watch, despite his personal history is Michael Vick easily. Loved watching him in Atlanta, was sceptical about his return but watched his first couple of games this year and was back on board...

Love the purple pride of Minnesota!

Mick the [censored] is the reason I follow the NFL now. Watching him from a Hooters in Miami monster the redskins, and then create the miracle at the new meadowlands... One of the most amazing things I've seen in sports. Maybe not quite the best footballer in the NFL, but I reckon the best overall athlete.

They seem to be caught on the Rookie Wage Scales which has blown out in recent yeasrs.

Anyone catching up with the pre-season games?

Especially given the real thing starts in a couple of weeks (on 08/09)........

NFL Schedule

Yeah, we beat the Saints (Foster 2x TDs in the first quarter.........) but I think we will get better idea of who is who in the zoo after week 1.

Tebow has been assigned as backup for the Broncos.....this sucks.

Oh, BTW if anyone wants an invite to our NFL Roto fantasy comp let me know.

Please tell me. Huge NFL fantasy player!

Demon Land 7, I PM'd you. See you in Fantasy Land! Should be fun.

I'm a Seahawks fan, after THAT FREAKING TOUCHDOWN

Hoping for 9-7, think the Rams will be too good though. 49ers could do anything as well...

Also, I'm up for a fantasy comp if anyone is running - including a draft?

Iggles did ok... but meh... you don't learn too much. Vick barely played... Jackson wasn't sighted, and Maclin wasn't around. We didn't even start our main running back.

Tebow has been assigned as backup for the Broncos.....this sucks.

Why?

Oh, BTW if anyone wants an invite to our NFL Roto fantasy comp let me know.

OOOOOH!!!! Can I come?

Please tell me. Huge NFL fantasy player!

You stay the hell away from me DL7...

I cant get into the link... Am I too late?

"UPDATE" Got the commish to drop the league to 1x QB per team. Dappa, if you can get someone else before Thursday we can run a 10 team comp. Anyone else keen??

Draft is 11 at night Thursday night. Draft goes for about 30-45 mins depending on how long people take to pick.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?

After kicking the first goal of the match the Demons were always playing catch up against the Saints in Alice Spring and could never make the most of their inside 50 entries to wrestle back the lead.
