It seemed like the commentators & the special comments guys didn't know about the rule either - they all seemed suitably bemused when the rules guy came in and said that batting the ball out in those circumstances was an illegal move.

I didn't pick up on it nor did a few people that I spoke to about it today know either - seems it's a "judgement" call but it looked quite blatant to me and the ref was right there to see it.

If the call had have been made in Detroits favour they would have been 1st and a half a yard with 1min 50 odd seconds left to play ... here it is again for those who haven't seen it.

Btw, what's with all the missed field goals? That Jags kicker couldn't hit the side of a barn

I actually thought the same, I thought if he grabbed it it was a turn over recovery but if he deliberately hit it out it was still detroits ball.

But then I thought I was thinking of rugby league.

Wow, big stuff up by the refs!

Not that I want to put the jinx on the Falcons but when I got gamepass I got the basic on where you just watch your own sides games.. Anyone know if gamepass releases a playoff package at the end of the year or I can upgrade towards the end of the season ? I think all playoff games are live on 7mate but won't be any good to me if I'm at work and want to watch the game later...

Yep, game pass do a play off package. I never got it as I got all the games on Foxtel.

I thought every score is automatically reviewed? Isn't a safety a score? Green Bay fans are having flashbacks.

Yeah I have foxtel but don't have IQ so I can't record and watch later, annoying. I'll just have to get the playoffs package IF the Falcons make it, annoying my Christmas holiday gets in the way of watching the last few regular season games as well!! haha

Bills

Cards

Pats

Seattle

New England

Denver

Not a bad game yesterday. Hoyer panicked for that last interception but otherwise a much better game that I was expecting.

Yep, the Colts have now won 2 games without Luck and with a 40 year old Matt Hasselbeck.

That division is theirs for the taking - it's really only a matter of the seeding number for them if they're fair dinkum.

The Colts are the anti-Melbourne. They've swallowed all our bad luck.

They dodged Ryan Leaf, tanked for Luck, can't draft any decent talent for the O line or defense but play in such a dumpster fire of a division they still make finals every year.

We are the oldest team in the comp, the Colts stole a historic team from another city. It all makes no sense.

Saints, Bills, Pats

Should've gone Bills or Cardinals, darn it. I thought the Lions turned it around last week, obviously not.

Cincy and Dalton getting it done in a big game might be the story so far, particularly with the Ravens losing again.

Can anyone else see parallels between Denver and Freo?

Are the 4 AFC divisions and the NFC North all decided?

We've got a breakaway group in the tipping comp after today's results - with JV7 leading the way (again)

Seattle winning would have got 2 precious points for me if they hadn't have blown a 24-7 lead - not happy.

As usual there's any number of stories out of this weeks games but Eli marching his team down the field for a game winning TD was a highlight - he's a big occasion player who seems to only show his absolute best when under extreme pressure.

A lot of QB's are good until a certain point and then they fall away but this bloke is a negative splitter. The NFC East is always an interesting division and with Romo out, any of the teams are a chance. It's my favourite division to watch outside of the NFC North.

Agree with you somewhat on the Freo/Denver comparisons and they do seem to have shifted towards being a defense orientated side with Peyton there to "manage" the games - it might just work too. Again, the seedings in the AFC are all important.

Dalton & the Bengals - I'm still going to wait and see with them ... the Ravens are playing poorly and are just leaking far too many points and the Steelers will need to win at San Diego to remain a threat. However, it's hard to see Cinci not winning their division anyway whilst the other 4 divisions you mentioned seem to have already been decided.

Other observations

  • Seattle can't win away from home
  • Atlanta are looking dangerous
  • The Bears aren't tanking
  • The Eagles might be back
  • KC are in allsortsa
  • Arizona look to be the real deal
  • Detroit might be tanking
  • Rodgers ruined his Lambeau record with 2 interceptions
  • New England will probably get the 1 seed
  • The Bills might get a wild-card spot

The Rams D did ok vs GB, Gurley is a star! Still no receivers and Foles throws dumb passes all too often and usually in the last third of the field.

Ps, Gurley is a star.

Average game today until the 4th quarter - that late Vick run was like the Vick of old.

Steelers are now 3 & 2 and hangin' in there.

Detroit look absolutely cooked. Megatron isn't as mega and I agree with Macca they could get the 1 pick. Seattle can't protect Wilson. It seems a lot of offensive lines this year are struggling as well as kickers the vikes tick both those boxes. Matt cassel gets a turn for the 'boys this week. It'll be interesting to see if they can keep up in a division that no one else can establish a consistent few games. Rodgers deliberately threw picks to try and prove he is human. They are the team to beat in the NFC.

That bloke can run. Once he finds a hole he is gone. Reminds me of a young AP.

I'll put my tips in soon enough but I might be tempted to pick the Falcons on Friday - or is it a trap game JV7?

Should be a good game all the same - a lot of the Thursday night games are divisional games so we at least see a fierce match-up despite the players often being a bit off the boil. I can't see why the league can't match up the byes with these games.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREGAME: West Coast

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
