It's a real difficult one. Personally I'm happy for Melbourne not to trade for one and let Spencer, Martin & Newton (assuming he stays on rookie list) fight it out for that role and keep PJ on the list as insurance only for a year while Gawn & Fitzpatrick are given another year to develop at Casey.

I I had to go one believe it or not I'd go Fraser.

Now I'm not a big fan of his but these are the reasons I'd go with him.

1: I believe if we are to recruit a 2nd ruckmen we really only want them for a couple of years as a stop gap before Fitzpatrick is ready to take over. Fraser's age & experience has him fall into this category.

2: He's relatively mobile and between he and Cox (other older ruckman) I believe Fraser can play a better forward role then Cox which will be important as our 2nd ruckman will probably only ruck 20% of the time with Jamar taking the other load.

3: He'd be relatively cheap while Cox would be much more expensive. Possibly only pick 49 or 66 for Fraser.

But I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on this?

From reports this years draft plateaus after about pick 30, so bare that in mind when considering what you'd be prepared to give up for the player.

Edit: Pick 49 or 66 for Fraser & the draft plateaus.

Please - Josh Fraser is SOFT as butter & hopeless.

On the other hand an injury free Dean Cox is a superstar

If both are availiable this is a NO brainer.

The thought of a Black & White reject disgusts me

More then fair enough and don't disput any of your points.

I'd still stick with Fraser for those other reasons though personally. Although I have to admitt I'd have a very difficult time watching him week in week out and he'd probably become my favourite whipping boy!

No. It's not.

More important than what they bring to our side is how much they cost us.

Cox for pick 12 is unacceptable.

Fraser for pick ~80 is a great deal.

In my opinion, the poll is flawed because it provides no reference in terms of compensation.

I mean, yeah, my first preference would be Kreuzer, but what would we have to give up?

I'm with you ... think the poll is a great idea ... but you have to attach an approximate "cost" to each player.

Thanks for the feed back, I'll try and fix it somewhat.

I have now edited the poll to include what the potential cost for each ruckman might be. This was done after the first 18 votes were cast.

Cheers.

Need to add Setanta to the list.

No problems ... I should add you probably should consider where you think the draft plateaus. I have heard from an AFL professional drafter and they think the draft plateaus around the mid20's - too early 30's pick approx. Hence in their opinion the difference between a 3rd & 4th round pick in this draft is very marginal if nearly non-existent. (I should point out that that person was not BP)

The Irishman can come under the otehr bracket. I haven't seen him take on any ruck duties for awhile but that's probably because of Carlton aray of ruck options.

Went with the Cox deal in the end.

Would prefer Clark but not at the price.

Can't undestand the love for Hale though.

I seem to remember he was on his way to the bush a few years ago. Then he (along with a few other forgotten statues) was saved by the second centre circle.

Now he is 4th string at North behind a relative newby in Goldstein. He can't get a game forward ahead of Aaron Edwards. He rarely rucks in the VFL.

Then again I suppose Casey might need another tall option if Millsey is going.

For what its worth I expect the acid to go on Martin for the back up ruck role next year.

The majority of these options, coupled with the compensation given for them, are overpriced.

And I didn't realize Jesse White was a ruckman.

Jesse's probabaly more in the mould of a forward who can ruck. Kind of like Ox, obviously he's not as good a player as Ox though.

He was 2nd ruck at Sydney for most of last season. Especially the first half of the season.

I think that the possible trades there are about what we would expect to have to pay for them....

Very tough...

I'd prefer to see the end of the experimentation of Martin as a forward, to allow him to become a permanent backmen capable of taking some ruck throw-ins in the backline. If we decide to draft a 2nd ruckman who can play some part forward (or alternatively push Jamar forward more), we could then play parts of the game with positional ruckmen (1 resting ruckmen taking the throw-ins in the forward 50, with Martin taking the defensive 50 throw-ins).

He was?

Wasn't it a combo of Mumford & Seaby, then later on Pyke came into the picture.

White in the ruck is a bandaid solution, like Hawkins, imho.

When I say last year I mean season 2009 not the season just about gone sorry, should have made that more clear.

I don't disagree that it isn't his natural position but neither is it Leigh Brown's.

Need to add Setanta to the list.

I would take him for our fifth draft pick.

Hale was my pick. Not in love with his game but he appears to be the most attainable guy on the list outside fraser who is just plain awful. Hale will be dealt, and I think of all the talls he could be had for a 3rd round pick. 3rd could be passed on by the dees depending on how many players stay with us (ala jones and Bruce contract talks) so there would be little harm in shipping it off the the roos for Hale.
