Most FF don't rack up disposals like midfielders.

I don't think anyone expects Hale to be a world-beater, but he fills a glaring need and there aren't many available capable of filling it any better. He also allows us to be a bit more flexible with Jamar, meaning (hopefully?) we can throw him up forward to snag the occasional goal even if Hale can't manage it.

On the other hand, we have to recognise that we are in the stronger negotiating position here. If Melbourne is Hale's nominated destination (any idea if that's true?) then North will have to deal, or else face the prospect of having a VFL player eating up $400,000 of the salary cap during a time where wages are likely to be inflated (putting pressure on the cap) by the introduction two expansion teams and free-agency. For that reason North would be stupid not to take pick 31, and we would be stupid to offer anything more. Surely a swap of first round picks should only be entertained if North agree to pick up half his salary.

Bailey and the MC will be weighing up our structure and a better fit for Jamar. Hale will ruck on the forward line and have stints on the ball allowing Jamar to go forward. Right now PJ isn't a dangerous forward option.

PJ has kicked 16 goals from his last 50 games, while Hale has kicked 76 in the same period. Some will argue that Hale has spent more time forward. The reason PJ doesn't spend more time forward is because he isn't a danger in the forward line. Nonetheless, he still does go forward for little result.

Hale is coming into his best years. He's played over 100 games and at 26 he's reaching his peak as a tall. How many goals a game are we better off for having Hale in the team as opposed to Johnson ? That is the question the MC will be assessing. By my reckoning we'll be 2 goals per game better off with Hale. This is in part due to the extra goals he kicks, plus the structural improvements with Jamar and the rest of the forward line. With natural maturation right across the board, plus a better run with injuries, we ought be a 4 goal per game better team next year.

The more I read this thread, the more I warm to recruiting Hale. You raise some very good points there.

I have an idea.

Why don't we just trust the MFC recruiting team and coaches on what they're doing for the moment. Nobody has any idea whether or not Hale will be a success until next

year. Adelaide have just received Tambling... who the hell would have thought that?! Hale has shown that he can play. People that are against the trade are are basing

their opinion on his 2010. Does that mean we shouldn't have re-signed Matthew Bate because he had a shocking 2010?

All we need is for the big fella to get back to playing his best footy. If he can do that, we have succeeded in acquiring him.

Hale's best is better than PJ's, Spencer's, Martin's and Meeson's. It also allows Gawn and Fitzy to develop at Casey.

The potential upside far outweighs the down for me.

Thats not what the people IMO, are concerned about. Did Adelaide give their 1st Rnd pick for Tambling?

Is this the guy we are trading for?

"Get off my train!"

NoNo it's not Him, is it, nah that doesn't look like him, I don't think. But he reminds me of that old guy from the Hawks. John Barker wasn't it? Yeah, thats him. I wonder if it's he who's after Hill?

At 16 pages a topic, I'd expect a controversial trade like Grimes for Hale.

We have so little to lose by doing this deal, that I really don't see the need to fret about it. If he is no good, it won't in any way delay our premiership run.

Wash your mouth out ---- John has left the Hawks..possibly heading to the Dees.

What, as the new forward coach, to coach Hale, I presume'. At least Meeson collected footy's & coached the kids, what will Hale be good for,,, calling Cabs after functions.

Or doing rain dances over Summer. :)

I'm sure St Kilda would have said the same thing last year about giving up pick 16 for Andrew Lovett and knocking back Collingwood's offer of pick 30/Sharrod Wellingham for Luke Ball.

That will kill their Window in 3 Years time.

Riewoldt has 2 left in him as a leadup, then he'll need to play deep. Stanley will have to take over & Lynch.

They need a true Big Forward to play out at the 50. And they need some class through the middle. Not Montagna.

Might have even shut the window this year, if Wellingham was wearing a Saints jumper and they used those 2 other picks, I'm fairly confident it wouldn't have been a draw the first time round.

I think their window is shut now. Barring some good trading/drafting.

The thing they need, that is glaringly obviously, is speed and lots of it.

Anyway, this isn't a thread about the Saints.

Let's get back to Hale.

I've heard people say that but I don't think so. I think they're still there, but IMO, they must rejig their structure up front.

I was hoping they'd play Montagna (clever) in the pocket as he was out of touch & slow. Switch him with Milne thru the middle for run, speed & skill. McEvoy forward as he was too inexperienced in the Mid zone. He cost them. Perhaps Goddard starting off CHF pushing up through the middle & doubling back with his engine. ditto Roo out of the pocket roaming well up the ground & cutting back.

With all that leadup, they needed a Big marking target out around 45.

Anyways, thats them.

I think that the mention of the Jolly trade from last year specifically points to how much we should give for Hale...

Jolly had a fantastic year at the Swans before being traded for a late first round pick....

Hale is worth nothing more than just a second round pick(without pick swapping)....

If, he is no good, you can count on another, 16 pages of topic, I'm sure. LOL..

I'm sure it's boredom and footy withdrawals, but seriously, 17 pages on D. Hale? Never has so much been said about a possible trade since C. Moneybags Judd.

And to whoever compared this to the St Kilda trade of last year, please!

Ball was an experienced player and a key midfielder, and last year's draft wasn't getting the shite kicked out of it by Gold Coast. We're looking at trading draft places, when our list is already full of first round starts in the making. And maybe we'll trade a fringe player, but we won't be losing key members of our starting 18, and we won't be trading in bad characters who'll end up on rape charges (you'd hope).

Our club has done little wrong in the last three years. Don't see why they'd start screwing up now.

P.S.- Leigh Brown was very important to Collingwood this year, and he sucks a hell of a lot more than Hale probably could/will.

I'll take your word for it. ;)

just to stir things up a little bit, but i heard from a person who is quite reliable when it comes to essendon, knew about hirdy well before he opted for an interviem, none the less, he reckons essendon are extremely keen on hale, and are likely to be playing a big move to get him in the next couple days.

what makes me hopeful is the quotes coming from Prendergast indicate we are not desperate for any player. Desperation is what will lead us to being ripped off.

If we get Hale for a fair price... great. If we miss out bc some other club offers something we can't match... that's ok too. We do have an All Australian ruckman, and a forward line consisting of Watts, Jurrah, Pettard, Green, Wona and Sylvia... we'll survive without Hale very easily.

If we give more than pick 32 i'd be dissapointed

That is exactly right. We take him on our terms or not at all. If Nth don't like it then they can pay almost a million bucks over the next couple of years so he can star in the VFL.

Lets hope they hurry up with it..

Not sure how you define "help us win a flag"!

If he fills the hole we are looking for over the next 2-3 years while our young ruckman develop and we play in finals in 11/12 and

make the GF in 13/14 then he has helped us win a GF!

Clearly Spencer, Mckenzie and Gawn are some way off filling the role we need from a player in 2011.

There does not appear too many other options to me.

I think it boils down to Keep PJ or get Hale.

Remember we gave away Jolley because we thought he was inferior to White and he has now played in two Premierships.

Hale might be the same and who knows what a change of teams might do!

We didnt give Jolly away he went becuse he wasnt played even though he knew he was better that White and all he wanted was a fare share of the exorbidant pay that the favourite son was being paid> White 'stole' a lot of money from the MFC and returned many ordinary performances - almost killed us finanacially. Just like another well known favoured son. Blind Freddy could se that Jolly was the better ru8ckman in the year before he left. I can never forgive Daniher for that

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
