Possible Coaching changes

Featured Replies

Sorry to push this thread back onto Scotty West, but there were a number of attributes of his playing career that I think would serve him well as a coach:

(1) He rarely if ever played a bad game, even if his team was getting smashed, and especially when it was close.

(2) He showed immense courage but intelligently, never recklessly.

(3) He was at his best in clearances & stoppages.

(4) He was never sublimely talented, or blessed with supreme athletic ability. He became such an effective player largely on the back of his extreme footy smarts - reading the play, great hands, intelligent positioning etc.

I'd say that the "thinking/innovative side of his game" was his key playing attribute, and if he can impart just a little of that to our current crop of young mids, he's a huge asset. Wouldn't necessarily want him to be the kicking coach, though!

I know less about Mark Williams - what's his CV?

The key though is being able to articulate what it is that made him perform as he did and in a way that the players can take it on board and it is beneficial to them.

He might have intrinsically known what to do on the field, but putting it into words and making the kids understand might be a whole new challenge altogether.

I believe Mark Williams was development coach before he moved up and took on this role. Not sure beyond that. Something at Sandy I think?

triple premiership coach (or 4?) at sandy before becoming development coach at melbourne and then midfield coach after paul williams left

Has our fitness improved in the last 2 seasons?

i would say No, and therefore we need new quality fitness (strength and conditioning) coaches to ensure the correct and quick development of our young guns

unlike west coast, who smash there young blokes into fitness. (nic nat)

MFC fitness staff are taking the long road in developing young body's.

Putting muscle on young body's is a long process.

young men need to learn how to properly develop there body, for longevity.

How would you possibly know?

There was an article recently on MFC.com that said that Scott West was now a full time coach at melb.

just to clear that up.

Let me spy on the club's operations for a month and I can give you an appraisal of coaches, fitness blokes etc.

Everyone sounds so uninformed and silly making judgements on things you cannot see.

You can appraise a player, but a line coach? A part-time coach? BB? Santa Clause?

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
