In other sports news:

Ferrari have conceded that they cannot win the 2009 championship and are focusing on developing their car for 2010.

Fulham are hoping to do well in Europe this year and again finish top 7 to qualify for the Europa League.

Pim Verbeek wants us to make Round 2 of the World Cup in 2010.

The Cleveland Indians just traded their best player to the Boston Red Sox.

It's lucky we don't apply the more extreme version of the arguments applied in the 7 preceding pages, otherwise each of these teams would be immediately disbanded because they are not trying to win the premiership/championship.

Why should Ferrari waste time? They should be looking to 2010 because that is their next opportunity to win the whole thing.

Fulham are in a compromised league in which every team goes along but hopes that they can attract their own Abramovich to one day win the whole thing.

Verbeek is setting realistic targets for a national team that wants to continue progressing in world cups, get a bit of luck in one, and win the whole thing.

The Cleveland Indians, after another losing first 100 games, decided to reload for the future with excellent prospects in place of Lee and Martinez, in an attempt to next year onwards - win the whole thing.

I assume he feels vindicated.

I was thinking more along the lines of heart-warmed... That the club IS doing everything, including potentially embarrassing itself, to get Scully and co o the club.

Has this thread seriously turned to Ferrari? Wow. What a way to get us to 10 pages of posts...

Thread of the year award coming up.

My mates chided me on how the Dees could almost screw it up and win...

Sheahan himself said, about 3 months ago, that "finishing the year on 5 wins would be so Melbourne." Lamenting the fact that the club had no foresight and gumption...

Well now we have both and I expect Bailey to finish the job this Sunday in...

How have we won 12 premierships if we have no forsight and gumption?

12 premeirships?

I think you're stuck on hindsight, not foresight...

Mate, you're young. We have been crap since the mid 60s.

Moderate success is just that, and is quickly forgotten, or in the case of 88 and 00, not so quickly forgotten.

The Melbourne of the last 40 years has, up until recently, rested so completely on its laurels that the club nearly slipped into a coma. We briefly awoke before we got a new moniker in 1996, and then went back to sleep for a decade leaving our training facilities the worst in the league, our membership the lowest in the league, and the club $5 million in debt.

We haven't in the past done what was necessary to keep the club thriving, and have been happy to just survive.

I believe this has changed and Bailey is doing what he needs to do for this club.

We need stars.

Not scrappy wins against teams that don't turn up on the day.

Just wondering: If we win a flag does that mean we can fold now that the objective has been achieved? Just a thought.

And a ridiculous one at that.

We exist to win premierships. Exist not fold, not cease to exist. Whilst we're enrolled to compete in the Premiership season of the AFL there should be no other reason for existing. It's our sole reason for being - win the premiership. It's not a primary reason, it's not a fundamental reason, it's the sole reason. The only thing that matters is winning the flag. By all means as supporters we enjoy the journey, we enjoy the wonderful isolated moments, but there can be no other reason for existing in the competition. It has to be totally about winning it, or placing ourselves in a position to be able to win it. And when we win it, we'll back up and win it again. And again.

Some of you may be happy with your blanky on your knees and a lovely thermos flask close at hand, but try to understand the only thing that matters to football clubs. Winning the prize.

 Do you see anyone laughing at your joke.

How can it be a joke, when you say, "Just a thought?"

If that is a joke then Warwick Capper is a likeable bloke.

How should a hard man dress for premierships?

Is mid strength in a plastic cup flag food?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
