Cale Morton Vs Cyril Rioli

Sometimes I curse the ability to read after one of your posts.

 ! Touche, Jarka.

I agree with you and Geddy. The assertion that a player's disposal can only stay the same or get worse actually made me laugh out loud.

Freak is very fractionally right in that the 'biomechanics' of a players' kicking is usually very hard to change because in most cases they've been doing it since they were pups. However the raw mechanics of a kick is only a very small part of the total story of a disposal -- as Geddy already aluded to, there's a million other variables that can be worked on.

Morton's a good kick, there's no doubt about it. There's already been a vast improvement on his ability to hit a target since last year. That's the affect of work on all those intangibles already mentioned, such as adjusting to the tempo of the game and confidence.

I'll keep Cale. I like what I see and he will be one of the best 3 on the ground in our next premiership.

Interesting question.

As of right now, I think most neutral supporters (especially non-fantasy playing neutral fans ;) ) would rate Rioli as the superior performer, but I still like Cale as the long term prospect.

First off I think that a player with Rioli's attributes coming out of the draft (small forward with speed/agility/goal sneaking etc) was always going to be more inclined to make an impact earlier than Cale (light frame more of an impediment, no defined role/position coming in).

I would admit that Rioli is proving himself to be much more than a goal sneak, but I just rate Cale's ceiling a little higher. He has a unique combination of (in my opinion) height, poise, running ability that MAY allow him to become a truly transcendent player, able to play midfield, push forward and be a marking/goal kicking threat, or give a chop out down back. Now this may be a long bow to draw given he really has only played a loose defensive role that's prone to high stat accumulation. But given the tools he has to work with, and the improvement in the admittedly shaky disposal he showed early in his career, I just think he can become a really unique, special player.

Actually the last time I was so high on a young player was Thompson... hope we get a better outcome this time around <_<

Do you think we got our picks right in the 2007 Draft in hind sight?

You're not a very subtle thinker are you?

You're fanatical devotion to single issue elements of a players game is both boringly lacking in a wider perspective and egregious. However, you seem to be able to continually match this unaffected simplicity in your non-critical backing of any player you feel meets your criteria of being "elite".

Being able to be a very good or even elite player invloves the application of more elements than kicking - some of them intangible. That being said, Cale is a very good user of the ball by foot - well above average. He may not be amongst the exalted company of the very best kicks in the league, but he doesn't need to be in order for him to become top line. What he currently has is sufficient. Its also worth moting thay his kicking appears to have improved over his short career as he's settled to the pace and demands of the game at this level. I'd back it to improve further in the future.

Even if Cale's kicking doesn't show improvement, his other attributes including his ability to read the play, find space, mark, link up and his work ethic are a solid enough foundation for him to become very good. This is why there is an appreciation in the wider footballing community that Cale's ceiling is a lofty one indeed. From what I have seen (which is considerable for a 2nd year player built as he is) I'll back him to mark out an impressive career and be viewed as one of the best of the 2007 crop. He does needs to find more of an appetite for the contested ball to make the most of his wide-ranging skills, but I'll give him time to develop to do so, rather than rush into pre-mature evaluations.

As for the overall question of this thread, its far too early to be definitively declaring whether we made the most of chances at the 2007 draft but I think its becoming clear that we will do quite well out of it.

Your self-righteous, dismissive conviction that you are able to assert the MFC has blundered in its opportunities at the draft is symptomatic of the impatient and self-proclaimed wise. The irony of it all is that you're unware of the fact that your opaque arguements highlight the limited scope of your footballing "insight".

If I was offered this I would very sadly say yes.

Rioli is potentially as good as Ablett jnr.

HOWEVER. I think we will have done extremely well out of this draft when we look back in 10 years time.

Its "minority" or in your case youre in the moronity.

Here are the results as at the time I post.

Aaron Davey 7 15.56%

Gary Ablett Jnr 10 22.22%

Cyril Rioli 8 17.78%

Daniel Motlop 9 20.00%

Steve Johnson 6 13.33%

Didak 1 2.22%

Other 4 8.89%

A total of 45 votes to make a survey from posters who would have as much clue as you do. And you use that as evidence.

BTW, the issue was why you did not include Ablett in your top 3 as a skilful.

You probably miss the biggest irony in that you have criticise others for juvenile arguments and you're...

Personally I think the best part of those results is that Ablett actually has more votes than anyone else :)

By Freak's logic, since those results indicate that Ablett is not the most skilled player in the comp, then none of those in the vote are, because none have a majority vote. That poll could include every player in the comp, and the results could be the same. What would his conclusion be then -- that nobody is the most skilled player?

Too easy.

And that's what he's got - excellent footskills. He's an elite kick.

Btw, did anybody see Gibbs absolutely torch the footy by foot today ?

Morton/Watts/Scully + Bailey > Murphy/Gibbs/Kreuzer + Ratten

If we get Scully, that is.

I've always thought Carlton's list was absolutely hopeless and years on it's the same.

I've always thought Carlton's list was absolutely hopefully and years on it's the same.

I'm starting to think that Scully will be wearing yellow and black next season.

I'm starting to think that Scully will be wearing yellow and black next season.

Because Scully is falling off the radar or because we will win more than 4?

hmmm looks like you're in the monority jarka. With 78% of voters(neutral most likely too) believing Gary Ablett IS NOT the most skilled player in the comp. Oh well, better luck next time. too easy

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=582123

You're quoting a bigfooty thread to prove your point?

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha *breath* hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

ahhh, that's funny

I wonder how many think he doesn't get tackled because of his body shape

Edit: I never said that Ablett is the most skillfull mid going around, I just think that your statement about his body shape is hilarious, let's go back and revisit that post...

Ablett is simply good because his body shape is impossible to tackle.

You know, it never gets old, it's still funny the third time around. Why don't you create a poll on bigfooty asking how many people agree with this opinion?

Too easy.

Very true, but how good is the entertainment on a quiet Sunday morning? You can't pay for stuff like this, marvelous.

Because Scully is falling off the radar or because we will win more than 4?

Because I reckon we may well win more than 4 and Richmond are a great chance for the spoon.

Imo, Scully will definately go no. 1

I'm starting to think that Scully will be wearing yellow and black next season.

I've been thinking the same thing. I felt so dirty last week when I almost threw my telly out the window after Tredrea pushed a Tiger defender square in the back to take the mark that led to the game winning goal, I'm actually finding myself tuning in to support them each and every week . Certainly not the standard against which we want to judge ourselves, but I can say without reservation that we are playing better footy than them at the minute and it's looking increasingly unlikely that we will win fewer games than them. Perhaps the first game of caretaker coach scenario will net them a win at some stage? ;)

Tigers should have won last week, and could have won last night. They have an easier draw than us. I'm still not convinced they will finish below us. We'll see.

Morbidly fascinating stuff.

Just to clarify, if we only win 4, but Richmond finish 16th (and we finish 15th, presumably on %), will we end up with picks 1+3 or 2+3?

I'd assume given that it's a 'priority' selection' that it would take place BEFORE the first round, so that we would get 1, Richmond would get 2 (16th), Melbourne would get 3 (15th) and so on.

That's just a guess though, I don't even bother trying to work out the logic behind AFL drafting/trading/concession rules.

1 and 3.

Our priority pick will come before Round One of the draft

Oh dear...

This debate took an interesting turn tonight.

To be fair, Rioli was being tagged by a 4 game player, and Morton was under as much duress as possible...

Still...

Hahaha, from the top tier of the G I was thinking the very same thing, was always going to be the case after giving him such a glowing endorsement!

Probably one of his worst halves and a bit I've seen him play in terms of making decisive errors leading to opposition goals.

Reactions from others post-game should be interesting

Still no. He is going to be a very, very good player for us once (and this is important) he finishes growing (both height and muscle).

No it didn't. For me it just reinforced what most have already said in this thread. Morton will be an absolute star, and Rioli already is.

I hope you are right. From what I saw today Morton has a very long way to be in the same class as Rioli.

I am a die-hard Morton fan, and even I know easily Rioli is better atm. Cale has the potencial to be better.

The forecast said wind. The ladder said mismatch. The scoreboard said obliteration. Melbourne didn’t just beat Gold Coast — they dismantled them: 13.15 (93) to 0.6 (6). An 87-point obliteration, the Suns held goalless, and the Demons delivering their second-highest winning margin and third-highest score in AFLW history.

It was a tough ask for him to break through as a 199cm ruckman in the shadow of an all-time great in that position who is also the club captain. He had some good days at Casey but was unable to progress and was delisted at the end of the season.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #29 Tom Campbell

The 33-year-old Campbell has yet to play AFL football for Melbourne, but his Casey form has been strong and he has been retained as a ready-made ruck depth option who is widely regarded as someone who is excellent for the culture of the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #30 Harry Sharp

The Demons acquired an interesting player in Sharp, who narrowly missed securing a spot in the Lions’ premiership team last year. The 22-year-old medium forward played in the opening round this season and ended up with 18 senior games, although he was substituted in or out in for ten of those matches. He demonstrated glimpses of form, but ultimately ended the year on the margins of the team.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Let’s be honest, last week’s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper — second versus seventeenth — football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.
