Cale Morton

How would you know? His brothers are getting a bit big nowadays. You're totally guessing. However I will concede that if he suddenly finds 8 kilos, it'll completely change him as a player, and likely lead to some injuries, detrimentally effect his tank. It all depends on what direction the FD decide to point him in... the bench press or the treadmill?

Jarred and Mitch have always had a naturally bigger build compared to Cale.

The poster who stated that Cale will have a similar body type/shape to Bruce is absolutely correct.

Cale will struggle to bulk up due to his somatotype which is classically ectomorphic.

I'm not saying I want him to be extremely solid, but I would like him to put on some kilos which will help his balance and strength in contested situations.

Cale will always be relatively thin for an AFL player, much like Bruce.

Hope he continues his fine form throughout this season.

Go Dees !

There is a reason cale has not put on weight. Its because the footy club know best, and they realise if he puts on a heap of muscle it might not actually benifit him. Let him develope naturally. I think Cale only needs to put on 7-10 kg max. I dont want him getting to big.

As Daniel Kitson would say, "I think we're in the presence of a maverick". Careful DD, all this positivity might have you pigeon-holed as a 'happy clapping, glass half-full, strawberry fields-loving optimist". Keep it up!

Kitson.... what a legend, so disappointed he was not here for comedy fest this year.

Cale Morton doesnt have the body type that will be able to stack on weight. LIke Bruce, he will only probably be able to put on another 5kg to reach his peak

I vaguley recall I read something that mentioned he has only put on 5 or so kgs in his 2 preseasons so far so you might be right on that. I just hope he gains enough weight to be able to stand up in a tackle and hit a team mate. Unfortunatley at the moment he generally drops the ball at his feet as soon as he is tackled as he is so slight he is monstered.

Who cares about the Kruezer Cup? We got the best pick from that draft.

Ohhh. I see. I don't put any stock in those "classifications." I remember learning about them at school and thinking WTF? I'm not one that is convinced simply by a big word, with all due respect.

Plenty of skinny players go on to be stars of the game. Look at Fletcher. He's a rake, and he's played great footy for the better part of a decade. Besides, I just don't think you can say a kid's not going to put weight on/ Dunn was just as skinny when he was young, and he's ballooning quite nicely now.

Too early to say that a 19 yr old will ALWAYS be skinny. He may not swell to plugger-like size, but he doesn't need to.

He never said anything about Cale not being a good player or that he wont turn out to be one. He is just saying that he wont put on a lot of weight like everyone thinks.

How good is this kid already. In his 2nd season becoming a ball magnet. Is in the AFL`s top 10 disposal getters having 213 including the 37 classy touches he got yesterday. Really excited about this kid as well as Jack Grimes 3rd game 25 touches good decison maker as well as Cale.

True. It had occurred to me I got a little off track.

So just to clarify, I don't see how you can look at one skinny kid and say he's going to STAY skinny over other skinny kids because of some classification system that takes into account ONLY how a player looks. At the end of the day, we may never know, as I'm not sure they'll ever want to trade in his engine for 10-15 measley kilos, which may curtail his brilliance... which is already showing.

If it 'aint broke...

It's not looking and saying.

Dappa. There are plenty of skinny/thin kids yes. Some find it hard to put muscle on and others put muscle on quickly.

Cale is easily the thinnest guy on our list. You would be surprised how much skinnier Cale is than Dunn was in his first season. Cale is skin and bone all over.

Dunn at least had a bit of muscle in the lower waist region.

I'm not only taking into account this classification system, but I studied exercise science and did P.E. at School and it helps a bit with this type of stuff.

I'm not trying to sound like a smart arse for the sake of it !! Every body can be categorized into one of, (or a make-up of) these somatotypes. And Cale's body fits the Ectomorphic description. Ectomorph - characterized by long and thin muscles/limbs and low fat storage; receding chin, usually referred to as slim.

I'm not saying that this is what solely determines whether or not a kid can put muscle on. I'm sure there are some exceptions. However, stats prove that these classically ectomorphic body types do struggle to gain muscle. Dustin Fletcher was a perfect example that you used before. He is in his early 30's and still looks like a bean stalk compared to your average AFL "build". Once again his body type is classically ectomorphic.

Having said all of this, I don't for one second doubt Cale's ability or think that this lack of putting on muscle means that he is no good. I do however believe that when he does put on a few more kilos and his body hardens, it will benefit him greatly....

For the last comment about too much weight hampering his aerobic fitness or "tank". As long as Cale keeps running, (which is a required movement for playing AFL... ;)) then he will never lose his running ability. That's a bit of a wives tale the whole putting on weight slows you down. The only way in which Cale would lose it is if we put him in a Gym to train and never got him running.

In conclusion, Cale has shown he is very capable of playing the game. I for one have been proven wrong this season about his ability however I do hope his disposal will improve over time which I'm sure it will. And I believe that when Cale's body matures, he will be a much more damaging prospect.

Explained very well, some people are just not getting what your saying thats all. But id like to see him only put on 5 - 8 kg max.

He is racking up the ball atm so there is no need to change anything. Like someone else said, don't fix it if it aint broke.

Go cale :)

I do hope his disposal will improve over time which I'm sure it will.

You obviously weren't at the game.

You obviously weren't at the game.

No, you are right Hannabal I wasn't at the game. I am in London and haven't seen a game all year !!

I was basing my views on his disposal from last year mostly. I have seen clips of him this year but yes I have no doubt it has improved already.

Hopefully it will keep improving hey...

Don't let the socks-down skinny look of Fletcher fool you. He is the same height and weight as Mark Jamar ... 198cm and 100kg.

I think Morton is a POTENTIAL superstar, but if he is going to reach that level IMO he has to put on SOME muscle.

He really needs to fill out because although he has bags of natural ability he struggles to win the contested ball being so skinny.

You can be skinny, but still be strong, Muscle mass is a little miss leading. Over the next couple of years regardless if he puts on Weight he will get stronger and more confident in close. His long kicking on the run is fantanstic but the short kick that he balloons up over 20-25m is something he has to work on. His kicking his funny 40m+ his kicks seems to have good height and speed but his short kicks seem to be slow and take for ever to get where it is meant to be going.

Sign him this week to a three year deal

Just keeps getting better every game he plays. Even starting to win the odd hard ball get each week!

Hey Steve. I understand completely what people are saying. But there are those that say he's "always" going to be skinny. I just don't agree with that. Also the somatotypes thing is, as far as I can remember from MY days in P.E. just another word for stereotype... What I place more emphasis on is comparison to clear genetic traits. Like, say, a player having similar traits to their father or brothers. I like the size of the Toigs Morton, and if what we wanted was to get Cale looking that size, then I'd back us to do it. But hey, agree to disagree... And yes, the only point we all seem to agree on is that it's not really important that he be huge. He's already racking up some pretty monsterish-looking stats...

Hooley dooley. That's pretty extraordinary. Doesn't look or move anything like him...

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
