2008 Player Review - # 45 Matthew Whelan

Matty Wheels, turns 29 in November. Surely will finish his career at Melbourne, Wheels is more-often than not, the go-to man for the oppositions small quick forward. Strong at ground level, he provides a cool head with his experience down back. Hopefully is on the footy field for more than 12 games next season.

Once Wheels got his body right (and for a while that seemed improbable) he slotted straight back in to his defensive role with his customary efficiency and grunt. Wheels should not be overlooked in the captaincy & leadership stakes, such is the respect his team mates and opponents have for him. He certainly is an influential role model for our indiginous players. Matty has had shocking luck when it has come to recent finals appearances, but he is just the type needed on the MCG in September. I rate him very highly, that is why I became a little anxious when his number didn't come up!

45. Matthew Whelan [180cm 84 kg 13.11.79 - 140 games (12 in 2008), 14 goals (1 in 2008)] – injuries restricted Melbourne's best small back man to just 12 games and his presence was greatly missed by the inexperienced defence.

Love him one of the hardest tackelers on the side when he makes them they stick.

Love him.

Showed in the second half of the year how much he has meant to our backline over the last decade. Was very solid and hopefully if he gets his body right, still has a few years left to help the club, and other players around him.

A true leader by example, if only all others played with his same dedication and application.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
