I'd say Thompson is better than two of the names you listed, and probably as good as the others named.

My point is we have no players from the 2000 Draft on our list. Thompson would of been, but he's not representing the Demons.

I should of put this in the Drafting and Trading Forum. Mod's can you do that please.

This was when we were hit by draft penalties

Thompson at pick 16 was great recruiting, better IMO than all players you listed bar Kerr.

Our next picks were 62, 73 and 84. Very rare to get decent AFL players that low in the draft

Posted
Thankfully we've drafted well 2003-present IMO.

we better hope we've drafted well since 2003 coz we are relying on those drafts to build our team for the next 5 years.

if the current crop of youngsters fail to produce we won't be seeing on field success for a long long time

These clubs struggled with their picks. The kangaroos and Motlop probably the exception.

We were banned from even trading into the second and third rounds of the 2000 Draft, as well as the first round of the 1999 Draft, in which we still managed to pick up Green, Whelan, Wheatley and Bruce. Had Thompson stuck around, we'd be looking at a gun and probably our next captain. Obviously we picked up diddly after the third round, but you're not always going to find a Bruce in the 60s.

Posted

Don't stress.

We lost our second round (pick 32) and third round (pick 48) selections in the 2000 draft. This is ironic given those who were involved in the salary cap rorts between 1995-1998 which led to the penalties being imposed.

Scott Thompson looks pretty good at 16 - very few taken ahead of him have done better. No fault of Craig Cameron that he did his best work for the Crows.

Had we gone to the draft table with our picks intact we would have taken Ryan Lonie at pick 32 and Shane Wakelin at 48.

No great loss in hindsight.

Can't see that we picked terribly with Thompson.

Yeah, that was a good get.

I agree - not much after the guys we picked.

We would have taken Robert Murphy with our first round pick in 1999 had we gone to the table without penalties. Mind you there would have been knock on effects had we gone with our original picks so we would not have got all of the others you mention.

Never said we picked terribly with Thompson, he was a good get. All I've said in reference to the 2000 draft is "what a waste" (which is good for debate purposes).

Here's another topic for conversation, is Cameron Schwab responsible in some way for the draft penalties imposed in the 1999 and 2000 National Drafts?

Pick #16 was a good get, the others were fair enough given the players taken after them (we didn't waste our picks).

Graham Johncock slipped through the fingers. But it must be difficult for the recruiters in their defence...

It gets worse.

Totally overlooked in the 2000 National draft and slipping through to that year's rookie draft were Dean Cox, Dean Brogan, Stephen Milne, Shane Tuck, Michael Doughty, Robert Haddrill David Johnson and Casey Green.

Dean Cox overlooked? Sheesh! :o

Gutnick definitely did a public hatchet job on him, my understanding though is that the overpayments were made before Schwabs time, I'm happy to be corrected though, I'm not 100% certain.

Posted

Looking at our list at the moment, its clear that we have a dearth of quality players aged around 26, which is what guys drafted in 2000 would be now, so draft penalties do have quite a long term impact on clubs. If we had picked up 1 or 2 players in those 2nd/3rd round picks (like a Newman at 55 or a Cross at 56) we'd be stronger for it. Next year we'll have our old guys at 28/29 (Bruce,Green) and then it goes back to the Millers,Rivers and McLeans almost as our next tier of experience

2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. 2024 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. There could be more of that in 2025.
