I had discounted the probability of Port beating Bulldogs as their recent form, while winning hasn't been really convincing. But then again neither have the Bulldogs last two losses. Very glad that game is before ours so that we know the result. As an aside, this is one time a 6 day break might help us. We have had our 5 day break so the AFL can't schedule our game on Friday night to be before the Port/Bulldogs game.

Not a lot of incentive for Adelaide to win and go from draft pick 2 to pick 4 or 5 and push out later round picks. Walker did most of the damage last time and he is out. Lever and co won't fall for the same trap again - he will make sure we 'block the corridor'! Keep their small fwds under control and we will win. And hopefully, we have learnt how to defend a lead in the last minutes of a game. Hawthorn gave a masterclass in that yesterday.

Bulldogs lost two winnable games: Essendon and Hawks so it opened the door for Port to go top 2. But Port aren't there yet. If we beat the Crows, their top 2 chance is all but gone.

Update for J. Smith one year extension, As the club is in list management mode, I wouldn't be surprised to see a flurry of contract renewals in the next month or so. Hopefully, some of the 2022 OOC players sign early extensions especially Jackson and Petty.

That is because none of the potential finalists have the G as their home ground (unless Richmond make it). Other clubs know the advantage we would have at the G. Having said that it would be awful to not have a crowd especially for the GF. Imagine the players doing a lap of honour to piped faux crowd noises. Shivering at the thought.

As that was part of your response to a post by me, I would like to say I'm definitely not one of those . There are several posts earlier in this thread where I said I was willing to go into quarantine in another state, travel to SA for a few weeks prior to entering WA. Its been 20 years since we made a GF. Who knows if we will even play in one next year or the year after. It could be another 20 years before we play in one. And, I have vivid memories of 2018 prelim then crashing in 2019. I don't expect a crash to happen again but I'm not relying on future years for a GF appearance I will do almost anything to get to a Demon 2021 GF regardless of where it is.

Projecting your experience onto Petracca's 'family elders' and by implication other Italian immigrants was not appropriate. -

This almost makes me cry. I am Australian born of Italian parents who grew up in an anglo part of Melbourne. I can't talk to their 'copping it of course' (your words) but I never, ever heard parents or family denigrate any other group, anglo or otherwise. There was a great deal of mutual respect in the community. Most of the racism came from school and the schoolyard which sadly is when the damage is inflicted on the very young and the wounds and scars reside to be triggered in the years to come. Not sure where you get your information from. Best not to generalise. -

Do you mean by his family elders or to his family elders. Not being pedantic but they are quite different. Its hard to imagine family elders showing racism to their own kind. -

While talking of AFL360. They asked Petracca (who was on via zoom with Eddie) for comments. Just loved how he spoke so warmly of sharing house with Kozzie and Bedford and condemned the perpetrators of racism. Showed real empathy. While nothing compares to what our indigenous people have to endure, with his name and background I would think Petracca has experienced a bit of racism in his time as well. -
Better hope it isn't WA. McCowan has said he doesn't 'expect' many attendees from interstate. 'Expect' or 'allow' - yes I'm being cynical. He is capable of the dastardly when it comes to borders eg a flimsy reason to backdate 14 day quarantine for arrivals from eg Victoria. Any border clampdown will give him a lot more seats to sell to corporates and locals.

Seeing Eddie's hurt was distressing and heart breaking. He looked and sounded near breaking point. I was devastated to here our player was the much loved and lovable Kozzie. Can't imagine what the racism does to someone so young and in the infancy of being in the public eye and his career. I would think that senior indigenous players in May and his uncle Nev will get around him big time and pass on a few tips on how to deal with the ignorant. -
I agree to some extent. I will cut the players a fair bit of slack 🙂 in that Eagles were kicking with the wind and we were probably trying to avoid injuries from restarting after a long cool down and many hours in planes/on tarmacs etc. But Goodwin felt the need to comment on it. And many could see where we fell short in the last 15 minutes. Umpires or no, there are many defensive things we can do to close down a game and defend a lead. I would like to be confident that we can do it in finals.
-
I noticed that. I wasn't been critical just drawing attention to Goodwin's comment as it hadn't come up in the discussion. Your comment and those of @DeeSpencerand @titan_uranus elaborate on my point that we didn't do enough to close down the game and that our end game strategies need work if we are to defend leads in the dying stages of games in finals.
-
Goodwin made an interesting comment in his press conf about learning to read 'game stages'. And that they didn't prepare the players as well as they had hoped in that lightening break. I'm thinking he is referring to our decision making or lack thereof when we had a 5-6 goal lead and just 15 min left and they nearly ran us down. Setting results aside for a minute, other such games this year were Adelaide: 16 pts up with 8 minutes to go and Hawks - a goal and a bit up with a few minutes left. We didn't close those games down by using up time, forcing stoppages etc etc. Umpiring decisions aside we lost and drew them. A bit of work to do in our end-game strategies. I'm sure we have them but we haven't always remembered to execute them as trained.

Not sure how people work out which coach voted for who. Beats me... Redden was very good but got only one vote from the coach that didn't give it to Nic Nat. Goodwin or Simpson voted for Redden? Can't for the life of me figure out the difference in view for the 4 vote: Jackson and Yeo. I thought Kelly was pretty good. We need to get the ball to Oliver next week so he can get a big lead on Bontempelli.

Luke ‘dogga’ Jackson rising star favourite
Lucifers Hero replied to Dave1711's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yes, NN is looking heavy. He is managed in games: rests after 10 minutes. His impact is still very good. His ability to palm the ball into the hands of his midfielders was sublime - the ball just slides off his hand as if it is happening in slow motion. Usually results in a clean getaway by the midfielder. Wouldn't mind if LJ learns that skill. -

He is one cool dude! Playing at 'home' in front of family for the first time, against his idol (NN) and put in a performance worthy of a 150 game player. Gave a great interview after the game. Cool as. Mature way beyond his years. On a side note. With WCE sliding, Freo in the middle of the pack and us at the top end, I can see him extending his contract soon which expires next year. He is getting great recognition and exposure; fave for RS and having a great time. Contract extension sooner rather than later I would say. -
Top 4 locked in Lost interest in the rest!! What a dream if the final 4 order stayed as is (or Cats and Dogs swap spots). We would play first final vs Port who look the most vulnerable. Straight through to the Prelim... (Altho Lions could still make top 4 but happy to play them in first final. Also look vulnerable). Can we make a covid plea to stop the season now🙂

Your question that I answered was 'fear and demonising'. ATAGI vacillating on age groups, have played a part in the fear. Some of the culprits I listed spread the fear others did the demonising, some did both. I'm sure readers are over this to and fro, so I'm out.
-
No, I didn't say that at all. I said there have been many culprits and listed them.
-
I just can't walk past that comment. No it isn't ATAGI, altho they have had a part. The fear and demonising has many culprits: AZ was first demonised in Europe in January 2021 and beyond: "In January 2021, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine for all age groups, but a number of EU countries initially refused to recommend its use for people over 65. France and Germany eventually revised their stance and approved the vaccine for 65-74 year olds at the beginning of March. They were again among 13 European countries who paused the AstraZeneca rollout again later in March, following reports that a small number of people developed blood clots after receiving the jab. On 7 April, the EMA said there was a "possible link" between the vaccine and the clots, although it is still recommended the jab for all age groups. Several EU countries, including France, Germany and the Netherlands now say only people over 55 or 60 should get the jab, while others like Denmark have suspended its use altogether. The headlines surrounding AstraZeneca led to a drop in confidence in the jab. In March, the polling company YouGov suggested that only a third of Germans and 23% of French respondents considered it safe". https://www.bbc.com/news/explainers-52380823 The AZ 'risks' and lack of confidence in Europe was picked up by the Australian media and many so called 'expert' medically related people here, so AZ was demonised here long before the vaccine even arrived in Australia. All Australian governments and ATAGI were in sync until June, even tho ATAGi had back tracked on its age group advice several times. It was only when the danger Delta posed to under 50's and the risk profile changed, did state/federal/ATAGI positions diverge. ATAGI stuck to its guns. The federal government did exactly what you said they should do and sought alternative advice. Based on that they gave a different recommendation than ATAGI to younger age groups: get AZ as their was 6-9 months of UK evidence of AZ risks vs covid risk on younger age groups available. That was a decision by The National Cabinet (not only the PM, not only his Ministers) to giving alternative to ATAGI advice. National Cabinet is made up PM and Premiers etal. Of course that didn't stop the Qld CHO breaking ranks and reverting to the ATAGI position which only confused everyone further. To summarise some culprits for fear and demonising AZ: EMA (EU's equivalent to ATAGI) Germany, France, Netherlands etc Media in Europe and Australia Many medicos who cared to talk to the media ATAGI National Cabinet State CHO's

I was using them in the context of this part of your link: "Since 1990 the term "Third World" has been redefined in many evolving dictionaries in several languages to refer to countries considered to be underdeveloped economically and/or socially". Ditto 2nd world countries.

Not sure where they are staying. Ironically, I think they are training at Punt Rd but not entirely sure. Yeah, Hardwick losing his grip now they are losing, like he did last year when they were losing.
