AFL National Draft 2014 Pick 40
Watts Jurrah Dunn? replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
Spot on. 6 wins in 2 years, a list which will finish 16th or 17th next year and at this stage we're bringing in 3 kids with picks 2, 3 and Stretch. Staggering. -
The 2014 AFL National Draft
Watts Jurrah Dunn? replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
If a rebuilding club that has won 40 games in 8 years doesn't use pick 40 in the national draft that'll just about be it for me. We have the best development coach in the AFL now in Brendan McCartney, and we're talking about possibly bowing out at a pick where even we have managed to find a Tom McDonald, Dean Kent and JKH over the past few years. McKenzie and Evans must have some bloody incriminating photos of someone.... -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN NEWTON
Watts Jurrah Dunn? replied to Moneider96's topic in Melbourne Demons
Newton looks a promising pick-up for nothing. I like that we've nabbed a young Port Adelaide midfielder where there has clearly been an emphasis on drafting 6 ft 1" / 6 ft 2 " mids that can really run and cover the ground. It's also really encouraging that Port Adelaide, who've made good decisions for a couple of seasons now, didn't want to lose him and had a contract offer in front of him. -

Wow. Another supporter that thinks because the club gave these players contracts it must be the right decision. THE CLUB HAS WON 40 GAMES IN 8 YEARS - NOT MANY PLAYERS ARE ANY GOOD! I would much rather Brendan McCartney, the best Development Coach in the AFL, be given two raw 18 year old midfielders with picks 40 and 53 than hold onto players like McKenzie and Evans who have had years in the system and still can't get a kick at Casey. Oh, and if you don't want an 18 year old then take Greg Broughton with 53. A better half back than Grimes and Terlich who, with Lamumba, might actually help us get the ball out of the backline. Has been squeezed out of Gold Coast because of the plethora of silky half backs they have. But again you probably think Grimes is a beauty too. -

Oh wow what a terrific post. Picking up Blease just suggests Geelong don't think a lightning fast half forward flanker will be there with 47, 55 or 60. They are very confident that in this draft they'll be able to find good players with those late picks. If they are confident a player will be worthy of a spot on the list with pick 60, I can't fathom why we would not use 40 and 53. We have a list that have won 40 games in 8 years and Evans and Terlich weren't even getting a kick at Casey in the back half of the year. And it's not 3rd hand info. I just won't be naming the connection to Wells, but he has a lot to do with Stephen Wells. -

Speaking to a mate who knows Stephen Wells I'm told he is very confident and comfortable the Cats will find 3 players with picks 47, 55 and 60. My mate tells me it is a very even draft and possibly a bit deeper than some are saying. You could throw a blanket over picks 15-60 and there won't be much talent separating a player picked at 20 and a player picked at 50. When I cursed about how we hold onto spuds like Evans, McKenzie, Terlich and Bail and as a result might possibly forego pick 40 and 53 he shook his head as well. -
Nah, no point in going after players like Anthony or Broughton who would actually be better than the players we have. Let's hold onto evans and Spencer for a decade and hope they come good. FFS

Thanks for pointing him out DD. Thought I was watching a blonde haired Dom Tyson with the number 12, thumping left etc. Honestly, if a kid like this is touted as a draft smokey and is available at picks 40 and 53, and we forego these picks because we hold onto spuds like Tapscott and Evans, I will spew.
-
I'll be really disappointed if we don't use 40 and 53. It's easy to get a fresh injection of hope around this time of year with trades and early draft picks, but the fact is the list is very ordinary and the midfield is still a massive hole. A 31 year old Western Bulldogs discard led our B&F after 8 rounds and probably would have won it but for a broken leg. We look like adding a talented kid into the middle in Brayshaw but he can't be expected to do much in there next year. The other early pick looks like it will be a key forward, Lamumba and Garlett will only provide brief cameos around the contests, and Billy Stretch could get a ride this week at Flemington so I doubt we'll see him in 2015. We must give McCartney and Roos two more talented, young genuine midfielders with 40 and 53. Taylor is a highly regarded recruiter brought across on what I imagine would be pretty decent money - he should be able to find a couple of decent prospects with these picks. IMO Tapscott has to go, and given that McKenzie seems to be an extremely popular clubman and really hardworker, it's Evans who has to be paid out for mine.
-
Howe would want to start delivering some really consistent and substantial football for us next year if we've turned down pick 6. He is a one trick pony for mine. I don't care for high marks when he then either misses the easy set shot (2013) or kicks stupidly to a 2 v 1 in the corridor (2014). Not enough meat and potatoes for mine. Would have done that deal in a heartbeat.

The difference between Picks 23 & 40
Watts Jurrah Dunn? replied to The Stigga's topic in Melbourne Demons
The difference is that last year the following players were selected on or after pick 23: Crouch, Hartung, McStay, Merrett, Lemmens and Taylor. Not sure how much footy you watch but all of those look like they'll make it. We look to have found a player at 40 in JKH but after that in the 40's only Ben Brown from North at pick 47 has played a game. So you might say you've probably got a 50% chance of finding a player at 23 whereas it might be 20-25% at pick 40. If Jason Taylor finds a player at 40 or 53 and Frost makes it, it'll be a great trade. -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - SAM FROST
Watts Jurrah Dunn? replied to Gipsy Danger's topic in Melbourne Demons
I too was really impressed with those highlights. Looks clean, fast and tough. I think we might have a 21 year old version of frawley and we're 20 picks better off. He will be a beautiful size in a couple of years when he adds a few more kilos to that frame. We just need to find a player at 40 or 53 and this could be a great trade. -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - SAM FROST
Watts Jurrah Dunn? replied to Gipsy Danger's topic in Melbourne Demons
Mahoney just said there was some interest in Frost from St Kilda. Said the trade allows him to come in straight away and start day one of pre-season rather than waiting the extra month. Said that is crucial for a developing player. Also mentioned that Stretch could have gone mid-20's so it is all about the 'net effect' and we've brought in the players we want to bring in. -
Cooney apparently passed the Essendon and North medicals with flying colours. I'd prefer him on our list next year over Trengove, Evans, McKenzie, Jamar and Spencer.
-
The AFL website are reporting Mitch Hallahan is close to accepting a long term offer to join the Suns. Is anyone else a bit surprised that we don't appear to have shown any interest in any of the lesser known midfielders that have been discussed this trade period - Mitch Hallahan, Levi Greenwood, Jack Crisp, Ben Howlett, Mark Whiley (190cm midfielder from GWS that Carlton are going to get for very little)? We must have something significant on the go.
-
Size or development won't make any difference Tex because Jack doesn't have an appetite for the contest or desire to throw his weight around. His 2nd efforts are non-existent. Remember watching Dawes run past Watts this year to put on a tackle? You don't suddenly develop a desire to tackle and hurt the opposition. Watts is a basketballer and if we can get something of value for him I'd be rapt.
-
It was Jay Clark and he said something along the lines of 'there is still a bit of talk about Melbourne targeting players like Dangerfield, Shiel and Treloar'. Nothing concrete. He mentioned that picks 2, 3 and 12 would give MFC the opportunity to put a wonderful package together for one of those players. Andy Maher's final question was 'is there anything else coming from left field over the next few days?' and Clark's response was that he wouldn't be surprised to hear Toumpas and Watts' names come up.
-
The AFL should introduce a trading rule where unless you are a Free Agent, you have to nominate at least 3 clubs you'd be prepared to be traded to, and from there the best deal wins. 15 game players nominating just 1 club is ridiculous.

Couldn't agree more. I'd love for someone with some inside knowledge to explain what happened with us and Greenwood? He would be our 3rd best midfielder. We had the pick to make it happen. We must have the money as our list is sub-standard. I can't work out why we weren't mentioned with Greenwood or Howlett for that matter?

Turned down 4 years at $850k a year last year from the Tigers.

Yeah, really mediocre. A 2nd year player that can get 30 disposals in a 10 goal loss to Sydney is a real spud. We'd be creaming our jocks if we had a 2nd year player produce that sort of game against a top side. The only worry with Hrovat is that he's 174cm and a footballer rather than a Roos gut-runner. Not sure Viney, Toumpas, Stretch and Hrovat could all play together given the importance of big bodies in today's rolling maul.
