Yeah , you make a good point and I don't disagree with you on the belting and the repercussions that go with it . Looking back , I have no idea why I thought we had a chance in that game . The Hawks were a super team with stars on every line . We played really well in the lead up to that GF . That's probably the reason for my ill-fated confidence . A 13-9 season won't normally take you very far in the finals but that year we struck form at the right time then ran into a juggernaut . It rained in the first half yeah ? I couldn't get a ticket .

I will take the '88 season over any of the last 6 years - in a nanosecond . It's a strange thing with achievements in footy . Right now, if we got to 10 wins next year by playing some hard at it, accountable footy and avoided the beltings, many of us would see that as some sort of achievement . Making finals is a reasonable accomplishment , making a Prelim final usually means you've had a very good year , making a GF is a terrific achievement and winning the GF is the ultimate achievement . Too much of an 'All or nothing' mentality exists in footy . We all want the ultimate goal but there's lot's of achievements to be had along the way . Anyway , what was this thread about ? Oh , that's right , the Grinter/Straubs/Biffo thing . I like the concept !

The reality was that we had to beat the 2nd placed team on the ladder in the last round of the season just to make the finals . We did exceedingly well to make the GF in '88 . Terrible belting but in a lot of ways our blokes over-achieved that year . For more details you can go here

After all this is over and we're completely cleared of any wrong doing there should be no recriminations - none . CC and CS have had their names muddied through the media yet as far as I can see, neither of them have done anything wrong . We should stand by them after this is over . Any immediate change to either of their positions could easily be perceived as a sign of weakness and/or an admission of guilt . All of this stuff 'extolled' by Caro and her cohorts is flimsy and has no foundation . Just like hundreds of other sporting teams in all sorts of sports, our club simply went into a mode of planning for future seasons . This is an agenda driven story (Wilson vs Schwab) and our club has been used as a kind of conduit . Words have been twisted and misinterpreted to suit needs . One of them "They've started planning for next year" used to be used all the time (back in the day) . You start calling it something else and suddenly it has sinister connotations .

With Patto not being able to bowl we do need an extra 80 on top of an 'out of reach' target . The track is wearing and if Siddle and Hilfo can maintain a good line and length, we should have enough right now . Obviously Lyon is the one that people think holds the key but so often it's one of the quicks that gets a bag in the 4th innings . 4 or 5 reasonably priced wickets from Siddle or Hilfo and it's ????

That TD given to Houston was just plain stupid . In such an analysed game with everything being dissected to the 'Nth' degree it's hard to believe that a flag thrown by a coach can change the result of a TD ruling . It's starting to heat up with regards to the playoff picture - especially in the NFC where up to 10 teams have a realistic chance of grabbing a spot. In the AFC it seems a bit more clear cut with only 7 teams vying for 6 spots at the moment (that may change if one or 2 of the 4/6 teams get on a roll) . The playoff standings can be found here
