There's some huge match-ups this week with a lot riding on the results of those matches Headline acts ... Tampa @ Buffalo Seattle @ Rams Chiefs @ Denver Lions @ Eagles Chargers @ Jags And then there's vital games for Chicago, the Packers, Steelers, 49ers, Ravens and the Pats On paper at least, the best week of games we've seen this season

Wow! That's ruthless!

Sure, but the percentage of members who attend is still quite small I reckon most members are happy to plough their money into clubs but attending? That's the point of difference

Another AFL decree ... You, the people, must observe this match as a blockbuster. No more questions. Attend! "But it's 13th vs 14th?" Remember the 10. The Top 10

Pro sports brings it's own issues ... once the money rolls in, everything is for sale. It's inevitable As previously stated, my issue is with the crowded nature of the sport with all the congestion & stoppages. The AFL are trying to fix it but there's is a band-aid approach I vote with my feet and my eyes and I know plenty who are the same. The AFL needs the neutrals to watch the games live or on TV & devices. Without the neutrals watching, the sport is in trouble So it's not the die-hards or the rusted on types, it's those who can swing any which way Another example are the high membership numbers and the very low percentage of members who attend games. If you do the maths, up to 70% to 80% are often stay-aways. For most, if not all the clubs It's a weird question, but how do we get the majority of members to attend games?

The final straw for me in terms of AFL integrity was when Cripps got off A blatant shirt-front (king hit) and yet they told us that he got off because of a loop-hole in the rules? But they never explained what the actual loop-hole was? Ditto for Maynard Hundreds of prior incidents where the same thing occured resulted in suspensions, yet not for Cripps or Maynard? Where was the loop-hole for those 100's of incidents? They just make it up to suit themselves For me, unless it's a good game, I just switch off

Not to a great degree as far as I can work out. But the 2025 NRL GF set a benchmark in terms of eyes on the sport. I posted up a link to that ratings win by the NRL a couple of pages back And V'landys is shouting from the rooftops about the NRL nudging ahead State of Origin is another huge winner for the NRL so it's no surprise that the AFL are revisiting that area The media in Melbourne ignore such subject matter (heads in the sand) but it's my belief that the AFL would have to be at least a bit concerned Thus, the constant push from the AFL to ease congestion, have less stoppages and keep the ball in play ... by contrast, the NRL is almost constantly in play the ball mode, especially once the 6 extra tackles came into vogue The NRL 2025 GF was almost non-stop yet in the AFL, it's not unusual to see 80 - 100 stoppages in any given game So it's not a world market so to come 2nd in a small market (especially if the margin increases) is a worry I hope people here aren't misreading where my allegiance lies, as I want the AFL to kick the NRL's butt And competition is a healthy situation especially if the AFL & the NRL are up for the fight If you want the exact information, you're going to have to do a lot of research going back and looking at the ratings over the last 10 years Most footy fans have close to zero interest in such matters and will often just default to "I love my footy and I hate the NRL" ... my comments are not directed at those people I'm looking at this whole situation following the money trail Worst case scenario is that the AFL fall behind the NRL by 20%+ which in turn, would have an effect on whether Ch7 would want a sport that keeps running a poor 2nd Right now, I reckon the margin might be 6% or 7% but that margin is growing If the NRL can start making inroads in the United States (Las Vegas, Miami etc), where does that leave the AFL? So the wildcard round is about the money and being in full competitive mode (in my view) Did Dillon talk about 2 more teams having a chance at the premiership? No (and there's your answer as to why 9th & 10th are now playing finals)

The AFL starting becoming Coca Cola-like decades ago. i.e. It's all about the money The strange move was leaving a weekend free prior to the finals from 2016 onwards And because the Bulldogs had that fairytale win in 2016, most went along with the bye weekend as a consequence But I always thought we were giving the NRL a free hit. And now that the NRL has gained ground and in fact, is starting to out-rate the AFL, hey presto, no more weekend bye The AFL is a business and this is a business move. Not sure anyone genuinely believes the move is to give more teams a chance at the flag. It's all about the money, not just for the 2 extra finals but to keep the supporters engaged in the 4th part of the season proper And also, to make sure that the AFL is in true competition mode against the NRL The AFL vs the NRL is not a talking point but it should be V'landys is out to win the battle

Rodgers had an absolute shocker against the Chargers ... so much so that coach Tomlin threw him under the bus (that's my interpretation at least) And the Bills inexplicably losing at Miami opens the door for the Pats in the AFC East (who had a big win at Tampa) Pats 8 & 2 ... Bills 6 & 3

Wildcard Round
We could copy the NBL and have an in-season comp. Wouldn't be hard to do with the 2 best performed teams playing off for the mid-season cup. No finals system, just one final No seedings either, just pot luck on the 4 or 5 opponents that a club would be up against. The same games played in an in-season comp to also to be counted for the season proper Think I'm right in saying that the English F.A Cup is still a random draw The sticking point would be finding an appropriate date for the final (shuffle the bye's or play it midweek?) I've long held the belief that the AFL needs to be more progressive than any other sport. The NRL are taking their sport to Las Vegas, what are we doing? We've copied the gather round concept from the NRL and that seems to work quite well With regards to 10 teams now making the finals, the ladder will no longer be cumbersome viewing for the middling teams and their supporters For instance, after round 17 of the 2024 season, only 1.5 wins separated 3rd & 13th As for integrity and being authentic, it's the AFL and they'll do whatever they want to do. The whole fixture is compromised year in, year out anyway

The Socceroos in '74. It was grand! (via satellite in grainy B&W!!) we were up against the might of both East & West Germany. We parked the bus before it was a saying To qualify, the Aussies had to play a game in Vietnam and there was a strong belief that the pitch was mined And England might have missed out in 1974 by not beating Poland in their final qualifying match. Think it was a draw with England peppering the goals And you are right, the 2026 World Cup is the first time that 48 teams will compete

What about the masses rather than your tiny sample size? For instance, I know people in Sydney who love RL and can't get enough of it

Wildcard Round
No, not at all Australia wide, in terms of eyes on the sport (TV, cable, streaming etc) the NRL is in front) For proof, do a thorough Google search and avoid biased articles (either way) Here is one article ... NRL GF wins the ratings battle over the AFL GF Of course, in terms of revenue raised via memberships & attendees, the AFL is well in front But here's the thing ... would Ch7 (footy) be happy about being beaten in the ratings by Ch9 (RL)? And what if the margin blows out to 20% - 25% in terms of TV numbers etc It's not panic stations but nonetheless, it would be a concern for the AFL Thus, the push from the AFL to ease congestion and have way less stoppages. By the way, the NRL has way more continuous play these days with very few stoppages

Wildcard Round
In an ideal world we'd just have a final 6 as those outside of the top 6 have very little chance of winning the flag But an extended season involving teams 7th - 10th placed teams appeases the broadcasters and those 4 teams and their supporters (and keeps the season alive for the neutrals as well) Effectively making it easier for the top 6 teams in terms of rest (and being competitive) And Rugby league no longer has a free weekend to themselves Make no mistake, the AFL are concerned about the inroads that the NRL are making in terms of eyes on the sport (outside of those attending both sports and membership numbers) The AFL are also putting on a State of Origin game in Perth in mid February ... the timing of that game is interesting (stealing a march on the NRL?)

Wildcard Round
Well, from all reports the bye weekend came into being on the back of Ross Lyon at Freo resting a stack of players in a match prior to the finals (he also did the same in his early stint at the Saints ... against the Hawks in Tassie?) Fairly sure Brad Scott did the same at North on at least one occasion (resting players) Of course, now that we have dispensed with the bye weekend, will we see a return to teams resting players in the final round of the season? (more so pertaining to those teams situated in the 7th-10th spots on the ladder) It's a gruelling sport and often rest is the best remedy against players getting fatigued after a long season (as we found out in 2022?) We're heading towards teams having 2 byes during the season (in my view)
-
Wildcard Round
We need to get our heads around the notion that teams will rest players when applicable For instance, the Penrith Panthers rested 16 players in their round 26* match prior to the finals (they knew that they were going to finish 5th - 8th, no matter what) Some would argue that teams like Penrith have earned the right to rest players Most would know by now that in the big sports worldwide, resting players is quite commonplace, especially in soccer and the NFL. The NBA are trying to implement a strong policy but phantom injuries are always on the agenda Oddly enough, one of the reasons State of Origin in footy became obsolete was because so many players had suddenly become unavailable Yet in RL, State of Origin, players are clamouring to get selected to play in these rep games *Round 26 was the penultimate match in the NRL (not the last round)... they subsequently lost that round 26 match to the Canterbury Bulldogs 4 - 26

Wildcard Round
We'll all be watching (or going) if we finish 9th or 10th And if that happens and we win, bring on 5th or 6th!! Twilight or night GF will be next ... nearly all big time sport finals are played in the evenings. Might be every sport I'll give it 2 or 3 years in it's present time slot Anyway, it's now the Final 10
-
Wildcard Round
Yep, everything changes now in terms of our expectations ... if the thinking was that we are able to eke out 10 or 12 wins, then we're much more a chance of playing finals And forget the jargon of the wildcard weekend and what we might call the 2 extra games, the thinking will quickly gravitate to 2 extra finals being played
-
Wildcard Round
Yes and the teams that finish 5th & 6th can now have a competitive advantage in terms of resting players for a week after an arduous season (5th & 6th get the bye where as 7th to 10th need to keep going) The top 4 remains the same in terms of attaining the double chance And a lot of those end of season matches that we might ordinarily not have much interest in will now have greater importance
-
Wildcard Round
Yes and the bottom line is that robust competition can be good for business I'm a keen punter and I admire what V'Landys has done for NSW racing and the NRL. He's a true visionary The AFL are in a dogfight for eyes on their sport but both codes have hundreds of 1000's of rusted on types It's those who can swing either way is where the battle lies It's like Coke vs Pepsi or Trump vs whoever. Either side wants to win Ch7 won't want to be beaten in the FTA stakes to Ch9 & League So there can't be a footy free weekend Why they ever brought in a free weekend in the first place was a baffling decision

Wildcard Round
I highly doubt that the wildcard weekend has been primarily brought in so 2 more teams have a chance of winning the flag It's more of a business decision in terms of maintaining interest in the home and away comp and as a competitive move against the NRL For anyone out there reading this, have you found yourself watching the NRL instead when we had the bye weekend? Let's say it's 15% to 20% of AFL fans having a gander? ... would the AFL be pleased with that outcome? No
