  1. Except that it very much is subjective because we've seen this happen at least 100 time in the last 5 weeks and only had like 5 frees paid as a result. So to say that what constitutes dissent is not subjective is just wrong. Even Scott said it's up to the umpire.
  2. I can guarantee you that, true to form, if this incident was not involving AFL darling Cotchin and AFL outcast Walker, there would have been a suspension. To be clear I do not condone what Cotchin did, nor do I condone Walker being allowed to play AFL, nor do I condone the MRO for being a joke.
  3. Maybe kicking a racist is a free pass? Cotchin should have been suspended or at least fined for that action, but on the other hand, who amongst us hasn't had the strong urge to kick Walker? He's a complete bozo.
  4. There will always be people with legitimate reasons for being unable to attend, and as I noted in my post, I am privileged that I don't work weekends or nights or have kids to take with me to games. There is no doubt that the very large majority of Demonland posters are all crazy passionate and attend as many games as they can. But equally I think lots of people across the entire competition, not just Melbourne supporters, have gotten very comfortable watching games from their couch. The game is more accessible than ever to stream for very little money, and after 2 years of doing nothing but staying home, some people have probably come to enjoy it. Personally I hate watching footy on TV. You don't get to see nearly as much, and you miss out on the atmosphere. And I think after 2 years of playing in front of nobody, our players, who are at the peak of the competition and putting on a great show for us each week, deserve to play in front of packed stadiums. They have earnt that right and I feel sorry for them if they can't even get bums on seats when they are 5-0 and reigning premiers.
  5. None of the other rules in the game are 'emotional'. That is, all umpires know they need to pay free kicks for in the back, trips, incorrect disposal, head high tackles etc etc. Yes of course it can be interpreted and umpires, like all humans, will make mistakes and see it differently, but overall the rules are quite clear cut. This rule is dependant on the emotions of an umpire. What I interpret as abuse or dissent, is different to what you would, and can also vary greatly from day to day, depending on what else is happening in our lives. Sometimes we are more sensitive, sometimes we aren't. Similarly an umpire might like a player, have a good relationship with them, and will be happy to get asked a question. Sometimes the umpire would have had a crap day and is sick of everyone and will call a 50 for everything and anything. This rule is too prone to inconsistency, as seen by the 50 plus actions this week that you could interpret as 'dissent' that went unpunished, and the few that were borderline abusive and did get punished. What if I put my arms out because I am annoyed at myself or my teammate and an umpire thinks it's to do with them? As always, the AFL has good intentions, but their execution is horrendously flawed. You want to get more umpires into the fold and improve the standard of umpiring, then pay them. You say how important umpires are to our game, and they absolutely are, yet they aren't important enough to employ full time, when the AFL employs people to work on their Instagram full time for goodness sake. It is clearly not important enough for the AFL, so they try to plaster over the real issues with bandaid solutions which are making it worse. If umpires were full time professionals who got paid handsomely for playing such a big role in our game, it would significantly improve participation in lower levels, because it is a legitimate career path instead of something you do on weekends only to get a rousing round of boos from fans.
  6. The AFL has only themselves to blame for dwindling attendance and participation Carry on like this and it won’t get better, it’ll get worse. The blatant cheating, favoritism and inconsistent ruling on just about everything is ruining the game.
  7. We haven’t seen enough of the Brown Weideman combo. Personally I want us to give it a go for the next few weeks. I know what we get out of the Brown Tmac combo. It’s effective, but can it be better?
  8. Just mark him down for post bye and then you won’t be disappointed.
  9. And this is precisely why this rule is a big mistake, because it relies on individual interpretation and that means inconsistency and inconsistency is the biggest problem with umpiring right now.
  10. All the talent but no heart. He has great skills and a good tank. Could have been a wonderful forward or even a half back flanker or wingman. Just doesn’t apply himself enough and has found the absolute perfect fit in GWS. A team of really good individual players who do not care if they win or lose. He wouldn’t get a game at Melbourne with the lack of effort I saw on Saturday. But he’s still going to retire at 30 with more money in the bank than most of us will ever have in our lifetime, so good for him and I hope his post footy life bring him a lot more joy than his career has.
  11. I’m just here to say SUCK IT GEELONG
  12. Fine but the same goes the other way. I’ve heard plenty of umpires be just as condescending to players. Why is it ok for an umpire to explain for 45 seconds why he paid a free and if the player says “but” it’s a free kick? Perhaps if the umpires were not given such a difficult set of grey rules to adjudicate each week there would be a lot less for players to question. If the umpires lack basic consistency from game to game and week to week, why would a player not question something so he knows what not to do next time? Because truly in each and every game the rules are judged differently and it can absolutely change the outcome of matches. It’s not about the odd mistake. Umpires are humans and they’ll make mistakes. It’s about the lack of consistency and transparency. Last week arms out is not a 50. This week it is. Next week it’s a sneeze will do it. The week after I can scream at an umpire.
  13. They are Richmond fans. Please check those expectations at the door thanks.
  14. I don’t disagree. Our second half of the year is much harder than the first half in terms of who and where we play. So banking wins now is super important. On the other hand, the only games so far where we’ve gotten out of second gear have been against the Dogs and GWS, both teams who we know are quality and likely make the 8, and both teams who challenged and beat us last year. We rise when challenged and when we play against better sides. And when we click into overdrive we are significantly better than the rest of the competition.
  15. Feel bad for Frosty. He looked so genuinely shattered.
  16. Two things that make me genuinely want to punch something.
  17. Umpire 22 a disgrace. Hawkins a fat diving cheat
  18. Correct. Ward tried hard but was inoffensive.
  19. Defensively he’s ok. It’s what he does the rest of the time that makes you want to close your eyes and pray to Jesus Hawkins and his fat oily thighs are keeping Geelong from bottoming out. He is genuinely the only one not on his last legs.
  20. Remember when we had Frost and now we have May? Good times.
  21. This game is making me wish we get to meet Geelong in finals. I enjoy very much destroying them.
  22. When you order Melbourne off Wish 😂
  23. If you want to destroy the amazing culture we’ve built you can go get that fat [censored] Stringer. He is a cultural cancer. Now, let’s go Hawks. I am sick to death of Geelong.
  24. The problem with this rule isn’t that we don’t agree that umpires need to be respected, it’s that it is impossible to adjudicate CONSISTENTLY because what one umpire constitutes as “abuse” another umpire won’t. Already we’ve seen countless examples of this across the first 5 rounds. It is too much of a grey area and therefore needs to be changed to: verbal abuse or physical intimidation = 50m. Everything else is fair game.
  25. Freo is miles ahead of Carlton because they have a good defensive structure. Carlton will look like an A plus team and then immediately drop their bundle. They remind me a lot of the Dogs right now, reliant on having a perfect midfield game to dominate games but can’t handle any sort of pressure or defend behind the ball. Freo are very good.
