Couldn't disagree more - thought Brayshaws highlight package was ok ... nothing more. It says nothing about Brayshaw and said everything about the highlight package. I mentioned it elsewhere but there was two Petracca packages and one made his footskills ordinary at best - the other made his footskills look sublime. The reliance on any of these packages is sheer folly.

Shown some nice glimpses but hasn't put it all together consistently yet - but is 20 and is just coming into season 3. At what stage do you throw them out and say they are not going to make the grade. I would have thought that two seasons is not quite enough. We would want to see him step us this season but geez labelling him "spud" 2 years in is harsh I would have thought

The digital footprint strikes again !

Many on here would have passed on Fyfe - "no skinny kids" - we need ready to go footballers !

You should be a full time recruiter as you were the only "expert" who didn't have Toumpas going top 5.
-
Actually - you are positively agreeing with what I was suggesting. I am sure that our recruiters watch plenty of games and do all the homework you are suggesting. Even from your homework of watching more than two minutes of youtube footage you have pointed out that Francis lacks the consistency of Parish. This will never become obvious from a 2 minute highlight reel. From last years crop - Laverde 2 minute grab was fabulous - Brayshaws, to my mind, was underwhelming. Even the selection of footage is interesting in us forming opinions - there was two lots of highlight footage for Petracca - the most viewed one showed very iffy disposal, the second highlights reel showed the exact opposite. I live fairly close to the Oakleigh chargers ground - last year there was Melbourne Metro "intra" practice season in the middle of the year and i was blown away that even for a practice season there was 10 groups of recruiters that I actually noticed there. We have recruiters that watch lots of games and still not get it right and yet we have posters who are quite adamant on who we should take ( and scathing if we don't take said recruit) based on 2 minutes of youtube footage. It is sheer folly. I will reignite the Wines/Toumpas debate - recruiters see an enormous amount of junior football. There was universal agreement that Toumpas was a top 2-4 pick with Wines being not as highly rated. This is by guys who watch a lot of football. It was not a horrible mistake that Toumpas was selected by us - it is a horrible outcome that Wines turned out to be so good and Toumpas a bust.

What I do know (besides the speculative nature of drafting) is that many are basing opinions on youtube and other footage. All the early "experts" to a man have Parish going before Francis. I would ask you then to look at the video's of both Francis and Parish and I don't think any judge of football would put Parish in front of Francis based on the footage I've seen. What it tells me is not that Francis is a better proposition than Parish but rather to take the clips of these players with a grain of salt - fun viewing but hardly something to formulate a concrete opinion on draft choices.

more than our fair share - what amused me is most of the kids of the "billionaires" at Scopus were hysterically lacking in the gray matter department - no names mentioned ( think of a fairly large shopping centre on Dandenong Road, Chadstone). One unmentionable from my year - he made a small fortune out of a very large fortune.

You forgot to mention Australia's newly appointed Chief Scientist.

I will opt in and say that the three arguments for drafting a player that have me rolling my eyes are 1/ Great mates with one of the players on our list 2/ Grew up barracking for our club 3/ His brother/father/mother plays/ed for us so we should draft him

I had enough problems with Hebrew without you throwing yiddish at me

12 years at Mt Scopus and the only way i can write Hebrew is by using google translate.

Like last year, I seriously don't care who we draft as long as I see talent come into the club that year on year improves to become really good footballers. It give me such heart to see Salem really developing (even though he had injury concerns) and the start of Brayshaw and Hogan's career. The idea that you get talent and just plonk into a club and it will shine to me is a nonsense. I have faith that the structure we have in place will develop any talent that resides in the youth we draft.

As bad as some of our selections appear to be I hardly think it is a coincidence that Roos comes to our club and the revamps the coaching panel with the biggest emphasis being on development coaches. I also point to draftees learning their trade in amongst those really great players at Hawthorn - Contrast that with Toumpas being drafted into a Neeld led club. Good players will always shine irrespective of the (cesspool) of a club they are drafted into but we have certainly gone out of our way to throw obstacles in the path of our youngsters.

I don't think it is too hard to understand. We have cashed in on a top draft pick a year early. We are getting in high end talent a year early. In every draft we have to hope that the talent pans out like a Brayshaw and not some of the failures we have had but I think it is a sound strategy.
-
But there is a huge amount of revisionism on here. Toumpas was a no brainer at the time too. ( before anyone starts going on about hips - they should look at Stringers leg injuries going into the same draft and Stringer is certainly no mistake)
