Melbourne and the Football World mourn Jimmy Stynes
nutbean replied to hardtack's topic in Melbourne Demons
Dean Bailey press conference is posted over on 'ology We can have our opinions on Bailey the coach but the man is a class act. -
Alien Christensen ?

I had to give it a shot!

I have listened to posters with the luxury of hindsight tell us how we recruited badly and who we should have picked. Lets step up to the plate right now. Name one player after Taggart and Tynan picks who we missed out on (without the benefit of seeing them play). At least that way you can have cred by saying - I told you so at the time.
-
Since we are all being Captain Hindsight we got Trengove wrong - we should have picked Martin or Sam Reid or Nat Fyfe - all have had a bigger impact than Trengove.
-
Interesting that Jimmy got his big break because Strawbs was either suspended or injured and Jimmy stepped into the breach a little too well. I stand to be corrected but I think there was a little angst on Strawbs part because he was leap frogged. Does anyone recall that or am i making it up? Edit - up until then he was playing second fiddle with limited time on ground

so we are down to mustache boy in the green shirt
-
can we name them all. I can see K O'D, viney, one of the febeys, Neita, Connolly,Robbo, Strawbs. Check shirt -is that hoppy? Who is leaning over in pink ? And green tshirt on the right under Connells ? who is that ?

Would Emma Quayle make a good recruiting manager?
nutbean replied to olisik's topic in Melbourne Demons
Her good track record on prediction comes from talking to those who do the actual bidding. However I will not dismiss her as quickly as others. I take onboard Nasher's comment that she is good at articulating what she is hearing but I also know she does do a fair amount of her own "scouting". She has experience in watching recruiting teams so maybe this could translate into doing. She does make good judgements from the brief reading of her stuff. If footballers can play for 10 years and be exposed to enough media that they can cross from footy to media who is to say a savvy journalist who is not only skilled at interpreting others information but also gleaning knowledge first hand and has years of focusing on recruiting cant make the cross from journalism to recruiter. -

I'll jump in. I think she knows her stuff. I suggested elsewhere that she does get a lot of her stuff from a wide selection of recruiting people and these sources would dry up if she were working for a club. -
Jimmy's Legacy - will we take up the challenge?
nutbean replied to hardtack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I was thinking about this. I do not want the boys playing FOR Jimmy. I want the boys playing LIKE Jimmy. I want them to have ingrained Jimmy DNA. Seeing most of Jim's games I will state that Jeff White had more natural talent in his little finger than Jimmy had. What Jimmy had ( in all aspects of life) was the ability to get 100% out himself. He would run until he dropped, he would never take a backward step, he made sure he always made a contest. He had a desire and a hunger. He was a fantastic footballer because of his sheer will not his talent.Through the smashing of the 1988 GF there was one player that stood up ( and didnt take a backwards step -he got reported to boot) I want his legacy to be all the boys committing to play football like Jim Stynes. -

Shed tears this morning. My thoughts go out to the Stynes family. Rest easy big Fella - gone but never forgotten -
perhaps summiting ?

I understand all that but I just grind my teeth that a player can do the same thing as butcher nine times out of ten and the player will gets up and the only thing that happens is a free kick. When you punch someone in the head I am happy that if the love tap means the player gets up then one week however when teeth are spat out then 4 weeks. The force of the punch will result in most cases, the extent of the injury. Some tackling ( aka spear tackling) falls into the same boat - the higher you lift and themore pace in the tackle, the more you can expect a worse outcome. But Butcher's "recklessness" has most on here saying -" gee not much in it". The reason we are debating is because of the outcome. To me this incident is all about the outcome and I hate a case being adjudicated purely on the outcome.

The word "Sacked" has been used to sell copy. Here is the crux of the story "Casey coach Brett Lovett said he had been given the power from Neeld to drop AFL-listed players to the VFL reserves. Most AFL clubs force affiliates to field most of their primary-listed players in the senior VFL side to enhance development, often limiting the team's chances." So basically if you dont play well enough in the VFL seniors you play in the seconds - didnt that happen to Lucas Cook last year ? where's the story ?
-
I have a problem with this. Whilst it is difficult due to being so subjective I prefer the judgement to be on the type of contact made rather than the end result. Would Butcher (or a fair person) believe that Butcher's attack on the man result in that type of injury. His spoil was only marginally illegal because of the direction he came in from. The injury caused to Colin was due to his landing. It is like the sling tackles of last year - if the player tackled got up and ran off then no harm done. If the player was carted off then suspension followed. I hate the idea in football in marginal problems being adjudicated on the severity of the injury.
-
Butcher SHOULD get nothing for the incident however there has been a habit of the MRP of penalising on outcome/injury.

I havent read the article but I assume from the OP that there were two opinions voiced. If Ox is saying that Jack could get more mongrel and urgency then this is an opinion that can be argued and most would agree. If Ox went on to say that he hasnt developed at all in the last 12 months and is exactly where he was at this time last year then he must have shut his eyes all of last year.

I will make myself cringe with this tired old cliche but is there more than a hint of "tall poppy syndrome" in the Watts reporting ? Golden hair, private school boy from Brighton makes bad ?

If you want to defeat everyones argument then simply draw up two columns and write every teams regular CHF('s) for the last 10 odd years. Then write down at what age these players started to make a real impact. Draw the line at age 22.You will find that the list of players that impacted sub 22 is way shorter. Franklin - freak. Cloke, Dawes, Kennedy, Hawkins - normal development. Alas - our Jack may turn out special but is he a freak like Franklin and Carey who basically tore it up from day one ? nope. What has got me completely astounded in this whole debate is the common axiom that key position players take time to mature obviously doesnt apply to number one draft picks

I'll keep it simple. I like what I saw mid season last year This season, I want to see progress on his good mid season patch last year. I will not write him off after two NAB cup games.

I will make three comments - 20 years old and developing . Did I see strides taken during last season in his development ? yes ...... Having said that - I expect more development this year or criticism is justified.

You mean the elephant in the room when NicNat had a great start to last season and Watts didn't or the elephant in the room that disappeared when Watts started putting good games together in middle part of the season and NicNat went quiet or the elephant that returned when Watts season tapered off and NicNat had a few good games at the end. Hmmm...better not mention elephants - they can be fickle

Someone on these boards mentioned earlier this year that Davey would get straight back into to the team after injury as he had a clause in his contract that he did not play VFL. I was was sceptical at the time because I couldnt believe that would be the case and horrified in equal measure in case it was ! I am glad to see that it obviously not the case and the message is clear - do what is required or play for Casey.

I know of a lot of business who act on instinct, experience and gut feel to make large decisions (without outside input) and I dont have a problem with that. But to suggest spending copious amounts of money on research/consultants to justify your position - bad business 101 UNLESS it is necessary to get consultants/research to give opinion etc which you already know the outcome to give a better understanding to people who dont have a thorough understanding. Consultants are frequently used in private equity world for the express purpose
