I find it curious that there has been absolutely no mention of the fact that with Martin unsigned, there seemingly being an impass regarding his future at GC, and that we have PDS picks before the Blues that we would position ourselves to pinch him. Is there just an assumption now that Carlton will find a way to manipulate things to get him there?
  2. Not necessarily, allowing your contract run out is slightly different. If he is delisted before his contract runs out (as is quite normal) it allows a player to make his way to a club without any fuss, if his contact runs out then I believe (I could be wrong) that date is past the point of allowing a player free movement to the club of his choice. Meaning that player must nominate for either draft.

Yep that's the guy, bit of a bolt from the blue by Freo to draft him. Could've given him a heads up to say if you're available when we rate you we'll take you.

I vaguely remember we had a ruckman that trained with us, got to know the club and essentially had already had his locker picked out and then another club swooped in in front of us. I can't remember if that was a PSD or rookie draft situation but it definitely shows that once you put yourself in a drafting position you lose control of your destiny.

Surely there is zero reason for GC to do that, if they want to make him an example of a new found stoic nature with trading out their players they will make the route for Martin as difficult as possible. Otherwise what's the point of standing their ground at negotiations.

I think a lot people on here are trying to figure that out, GC intimated to the Blues that they would redraft him if the deal fell through so GC and Martin/his management will be the biggest obsticals. I'm not sure how it works with the draft, I believe he can nominate for either the National or the Pre Season Draft but who knows how it will play out from there.

Does anyone know what sort of coin he was asking for at Carlton?
  8. I'll give a B, we got 2 players that walk into the starting 18, lost Frost who with May and Lever fit is fringe 22. Lost quite a few picks but traded into the top 10 so for this upcoming draft we have something to play with whether we choose to use them or trade them. The only negative is that we are yet to address the forward line issue of lacking pressure and x-factor. If we're able to address those issues in the draft then it's another tick. If we find a way to land Martin then the over all trade/draft period will be be a massive win.

Anyone know what his contract demands were with Carlton? Aparently he was very excited about playing with Betts, maybe Lord Nev needs to make a phone call and tell him he can train against the best small defender in the game and hone his craft! ?

Will definitely be interesting to see how this all plays out now. I would be very annoyed with the club if they aren't starting proceedings with talking to his management. If we ca find a way to get him passed GC it would be a great get.
  11. I think it's a quote from GC themselves to say they are playing hardball.
  12. I guess that's down to Martin himself, if he speaks to GC and they say they will 100% redraft him then he might just say "well fine let's just do the contract now then".
  13. Definitely gotta play hardball on this pick, and dropped some very pointed hints that we may nominate Green to really make them worried.
  14. Interesting, I wonder if this was another deal with the players in the CBA. Seems very lopsided on favouring the player on his desires when the club that is losing the player should have the bargaining chips to ensure they get fair compensation.
  15. Given the lateness of how things are going and that we haven't heard any players being mentioned in potential trades I can't see a trade involving players happening. I'd love us to pick up another player that walks into our starting 18 but it just seems unlikely now.
  16. This is very true (and I'm still filthy the club didn't draft Ball), but Nick Stevens is a prime example of a player who the two clubs couldn't satisfy a deal (Port holding firm against the Pies) and he was picked up by the Blues.

Dogs did very well out of this deal IMO.
  18. I would love it if somehow it ended back with us! ?
  19. Hopefully the Martin deal will fall through (unlikely though). But hey who knows in this crazy world of ours.
  20. I won't so much be livid but I do want a player so if that falls through then we should be making them bend over for some other picks. Say 2020 2nd rounder as well.
  21. Darwin was always the game that the members hated, the players always seemed to look flat the following week. Keeping the Alice game means we still have an NT presence which I think is a positive, perhaps we’ll still do a Darwin pre-season game. Positive move for me and it also shows that they have listened to the members. If we really are going to get back into the contenders list then getting a home game back will help.
  22. I’d be trying to squeeze another pick out of them, say a late 2nd rounder or 3rd rounder (not sure what they have left).

I was thinking that as well but we had the room for Elliot, why not Papley?
  24. Especially since GWS said they weren’t going to give him up cheaply like they did with old $culldog. I don’t know how the Hawks do it, is their negotiator a Jedi or something!?
  25. It’s a very bold play, basically backing ourselves in to be back in the top 8. I would’ve liked a later pick back just to have as a little bit of currency at the end of the draft. But I’ll say this, we aren’t playing a safe option. We are going in saying next year that will be a late first found pick.
