  1. Probably why he ended up playing at full back, in those days the main idea of the kick in was to kick it as far as you could up the ground. He was good at that and it did not matter if it was a little off target most full back kick ins where. Funny back then the full back did 95% of the kicks ins. If you kicked it 15 metres into the pocket you would have been imediately dragged off and that would have been it for the day.
  2. But he was the coach as well
  3. WYL I read this differently. I think he is saying too much importance is attached. Pick the best player. Experience of recent time suggests the "Bums" are good players who stay and the Choir boys are anything but. Perhaps the bums are honest if rough around the edges. Not sure how you test for someone who has plans to leave not matter what happens in the first 2 years. To all involved The said palayer had wonderful character and a wonderful family to back him up. We now know what that back up was. Hind sight is a wonderful thing
  4. Halleujah to that rpfc. Correct
  5. I have a good friend who was playing with the Dees at the time. He told me the majority of the team got between $5 and $10000 PA. You can see why they would be a little [censored] at his $60 000
  6. There were other candidates, I guess hind sight is a wonderful thing
  7. Don't agree with that one. I always thought his kicking was the best part of him. DJ's biggest problem was the rest of the team resented how much he was paid compared to them. They simply ignored him on the field most of the time. I remember a game at Vic Park where he was constantly free on the Half forward line and calling for the ball The other players simply kicked it everywhere but to him.
  8. Agree Was DB "what we needed at any stage in our development"?
  9. Hi MrMoose Not sure you can have it both ways, either DB was good or he was not. If you accept what Neeld says our team was no where near fit enough for AFL level. It might explain all those last quarters where we had multiple goals kicked against us. IMO that means DB had a poor understanding of the requirements of AFL. So do you still really like DB as a coach?
  10. I agree with your memory Yoda
  11. I remember this game very well I had my daughter with me, half way through the last quarter I noticed she was barracking for the Dogs. Not sure what hurt the most losing or my daughter abandoning the Dees. She told me on the way home in the car she wanted to barrack for a team that were winners. Shortly after picked Essendon and has been with them ever since. We often laugh about it.
  12. Gee WYL I thought I could remember every game the Dees have won by a big margin because there is only a few but that one i have no memory of at all. Not saying it did not happen just have no memory. In the late 60,s and early 70,s we were very ordinary My main joy was watching the Pies lose finals. Probably still had the 70 GF in my brain.
  13. Do you every wish your father barracked for Hawthorn or Geelong. There have many many years when i wished mine had!
  14. No memory? not a thing? Make something up!! Only kidding
  15. 1960 Redlegs vs the Tigers at the MCG. My Dad bought me down from the country We drove down in our black 30 model Dodge 6 Cannot remember when it was but Redlegs got up and I was hooked. We could not get tickets to the GF but listened on the radio. Those were the days
  16. Thomo I have reserved my judgement but I think you are being a bit over critical. Last year was his first without injury before the fateful broken leg. I am happy to give him till the end of 2013 because I think it will be hard to show much after coming back from that broken leg in 2012.
  17. Or come up with a better thread billy
  18. Remember clearly listening to that match on the radio, Dad said that is it son good sides win the close ones The GF is in the bag, we then beat the Pies easily in the second semi and I thought how easy is this. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would go 47+ years without another one. Ahh the joy of being a Dees supporter
  19. Was the last time I went to the Footy with my father. Swore I would never go to Artic Park again. One of the few things I have achieved as a Dees supporter. I never graced it again. Even now I think of that day ever time I drive past.
  20. remember it well my eyes are starting to mist up
  21. I would have neither seen or heard it as I would no doubt have had a heart attack and died right there. No finals or flags for me please let be anyone else!!!
  22. a single Dee and IMO a good one.
  23. I have the same paint Chook.
  24. Yes the one and only DJ, was a modest ruckman in his day but as a coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
