    But it wasn't though...

We smashed Collingwood in the clearences in the last quarter and gave our chance every opportunity to win.

We were literally 2 goals away from winning the game and that was purely down to poor inside 50 entries and poor conversion throughout the night.

As if Goody and the players are going to blame the loss to Gus's being knocked out. Even Gus himself wouldn't be happy with this excuse.

We had Jake Melksham go down with an ACL injury which had a significant impact on our forward line against Sydney. Yet we still ran away winners on the day because we were able to readjust and create other avenues to goal and make use of those opposite.

Finals is all about making your opportunities count at every cost.

Look at the difference between the winners and loser this weekend gone. All the losing teams had poor conversion at goal compared to the winners who kicked accurately.

    There's your game right there.

It wasn't THE reason, that's for sure, but it definitely would have had a bearing on the result:

     - Loss of a top-rated player for the whole game

     - Movement of Petracca out of the forward line

     - Substitute on early, who only played something like 55% game time

     - Distraction of the players, worried about their team mate and furious at Maynard.

    But he didn't..

We're here to win a a game of footy and our full attention on the night should be purely footy focus in beating Carlton on the night.

Our season is hanging in the balance and Brayshaw and the coaching staff will not want to make it all about him on the night.

Players mindset should be 100% focus on playing 4 quarters of footy.

Yes, agreed - pumping yourself full of emotion is exhausting and off-putting. Reset with a calm mind and quietly go about your business.

A lot of people seem to have missed that the umpire, who sees thousands of ‘football acts’ a week, and was the closest official to the incident, immediately reported Maynard.

The bloke whose job it is to oversee the rules was 10 metres away and reported him. That tells you everything.

I think the MRO was going to be overhauled anyway, and this will give them the impetus to do it. I’d be shocked if Christian is in that role next year.

Yes! This is the first time that I have heard that Maynard was reported. Why has this blindingly obvious piece of evidence only been revealed now?!?!

The Pies supporters booing while Fritta had a free on goal really made me angry. Wouldn't even acknowledge that. They really are a sub species of mankind.

I’m normally ‘live and let live’ as far as oppo supporters go, but the Pies supporters were a new kind of feral last Thursday. Even a Pies supporting mate of mine who called to gloat the following day (never calls when we beat them) said he thought they were as foul as he’d seen them😂

I'll keep it short and ask the question that is really the only one that matters. Can we beat Carlton with the team we have?

    Thanks guys.

I echo @sam6172 - feeling pretty flat still: the media have written us off and not many give us a chance with our decimated forward line. What tricks could or should be pulled out of the bag, to be get us over a Carlton side that will be feeling very confident? It feels like when we played the Hawks in 2018 - except this time, we are the Hawks 😭

  6. I’m not surprised it was a bit flat:

     - They know they should’ve beaten the Pies

     - One of their main clubmen - Gussy Brayshaw - is apparently not in a very good way

    - The forward line has been decimated further

    - Hibbo has announced his retirement (what is that all about? Weird timing)

I reckon they’ll pull themselves back up by Wednesday: don’t underestimate the effect of Gus’s situation.

Not sure about Oakleigh but plays forward for Caulfield. Watson is a dead set star that can play midfield, could play back pocket but is lethal around goals. Quick, X factor, forward pressure, makes good decisions with the ball. Has a bit of Brent Harvey about him but I think with more tricks. For mine he is exactly what we need. Not ready to play AFL midfield now but would put him straight into our forward line. Would play front and square and compliment Kossie or allow Kossie more midfield time to give us a more dynamic look. Could allow Chandler to maybe play wing and put pressure on Langdon / Hunter who I think have been underwhelming this year until Howes and Woey Jnr are ready or the latter two could maybe transition into the backline.

Good intel - agree with the wing summation: we aren’t getting enough dynamically from either winger this year. Add some speed and ball use to the wings and it would lift our game considerably, I believe. I wonder if Rivers could be an answer on the wing or maybe Kozzie, if he has the tank? In which case, a recruit like Martin would be fantastic to shore up that small tricky forward position.

    Agree 4-6 weeks.

The AFL will make a political statement.

I am sorry but I feel sad for Maynard. What if he had been playing for us?

The next poster who says I do not feel sad for Gus will get a visit from me and a severe beating with my walking stick. :)

I wouldn’t feel sorry for Maynard if he was playing for us: just like I didn’t feel sorry for Kozzie, when he collected Bailey Smith: stupid act and deserved his ban.

I feel sorry for Gus, who has not only missed out on Finals but probably has to weigh up whether or not he takes the risk to play again - ever. I also feel sorry for Gus’s teammates who had to play without one of their key contributors in a QF, because of a stupid decision by an opponent.

F Maynard and eff his effing club and their effing supporters.

    (I’m still salty, obvs 😉)

The week off helps, with only five teams – Brisbane in 2003, Sydney in 2005, West Coast in 2006, Hawthorn in 2015 and Richmond in 2020 – losing qualifying finals, then winning the flag

it can be done and has been done. We're still a tough proposition for Carlton and Brisbane (if they win their QF). We have the grit and resilience to stay in those games and win.

I just don't know if we can kick a score to win. where are the goals going to come from?

Also add to that stat, the Doggies who zig- zagged their way from outside the 8 to win their flag - by that, I mean they played the maximum games in a finals series.

How about them doing the chant when Angus was lying motionless on the ground.

But gee when we were coming back the supporters started panicking. I would have loved to have snagged the last 2 and hot over the line.

    Sadly we botched many chances

Doing the Collingwood chant, as a player is being stretchered from the ground is a dog act from a dog club.

  11. Just got back in - despite having Brayshaw taken out at the start and a patchwork forward line, we should have won.

The forward line, we can’t do anything about for the next few weeks. If it’s true that JVR will miss, then Grundy will have to get a game. Regardless of how we go in the next couple of weeks, we need to recruit better ball users.

I loved the fight tonight: had that game gone on for 5 minutes longer, we would have won.

Also, Collingwood fans never disappoint, do they? Absolute morons on L1, goading after every goal and then 💩 ing themselves as we fought our way back into it.

Both BB and Tmac have a year left on their contract.

Tmac will be around next year. I think BB will retire early.

I guess we have to see how TMac gets on, but with Melksham out (or possibly finishing), BBB probably retiring, Schache at least gives some back up to our already stretched forward line.

A chap who sits behind me at the footy (maybe he posts on here?) has a theory that the coaching staff really rate Schache's ability and are trying to make him hungry. Not sure about that, but a theory nonetheless!

I think Clarkson knows enough to know that tanking is a terrible idea. Look at what it got Carlton 15 or so years ago - and what it got us. Just more failure. Even if you get a no 1 draft pick, the player - who presumably is a good player and probably a proud player - won't want to play for you, and the damage it does to your club culture takes many years to repair.

Amen to that. Clarkson will want to start a winning culture straightaway. They’ve got plenty of good young players anyway, plus they still get pick 2.

Edited to add: Of course, it’s a different rule for West Coast: they should just go out and lose if it gives us a shot at Reid 🤣

Bombers losing Parish would be a disaster for them. they’ll throw money at him and he’ll stay imo

I agree - looking at their last few games, they are in a world of pain: shocking effort.

Precisely. At the time that Melbourne was being attacked for tanking, the fact that it sent some players in for surgery before the end of the season was Exhibit A in claims that the club was committing the major criminal activity of tanking. Today, it’s okay.

I think that we were ripe for the taking at the time - there was little substance to our club, so we were easy targets. The truth was that every club had done it, with Carlton possibly the worst offenders.

However, we had a leadership that believed the fortunes of the club would magically turn around with high draft picks alone. The bottom line is that if you entertain the idea of losing, your culture is no good.
