That is one of the better footy photos I have ever seen. Sometimes you don’t need spectacular marks or big hits being caught at just the right moment, to show what this game of AFL is about. A photo that captures not just the moment, but captures the emotion of that moment, can be far more effective. The look of concern in May’s eyes sent a shiver up and down my spine and almost brought a tear to my eye. It’s the photographic equivalent to a medieval painting by the likes of Michelangelo. It’s a rare gem! (settle down Tim, settle down!) -
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it was a bloke who did my family tree… and he did a pretty good job. On footy though, I’ve wondered whether it would be worthwhile having a successful backline player coaching the forwards.

Is it Laurie’s fault that he gets selected? If you were in his position, would you be putting your hand up and saying “oh no, I can’t play, I’m not good enough”? Perhaps he’s not up to AFL standard, but there’s really only be way to find that out for sure, and that’s by playing him at AFL level. Last year he showed signs, but this year he hasn’t delivered on them. I find your line “He deserves nothing” to be particularly abhorrent! He is trying his hardest and that appears not to be quite enough, but it is hardly his fault. It’s almost like you’re accusing Laurie of letting the club down.

Yes, the Eastern Dark were a great band (I have both them and The Deadly Hume on my Apple Streaming service). I vaguely know Bill Gibson as he plays with a good friend of mine, Bernie Hayes, and was this year involved in the Elvis birthday celebrations at the Marrickville Bowlo in which I’m also involved, but couldn’t play this year because of my condition. I’ve probably mentioned this numerous times before (combination of old guy syndrome and chemo side effect), but our two guitarists were playing in The Lime Spiders (Ged Corben - later started The Cruel Sea with his brother) and Grooveyard (Ian Little - also played in The Bambalams back in those days).

It’d be nice to see a few of those doom and gloom posters who are a part of Demonland doing the same. I can’t recall who exactly, but there were those who’d written Oliver off for the season at a minimum, not to mention those who cast aspersions over his character (hence Demonland having to lock the Oliver thread).

Ok, yes, I know I’m an idjot, but I went back through both threads and found that in the game day thread, ANB got 11 mentions, 6 negative and 5 positive. In the Post Game thread ANB got two mentions, one positive and one negative. The thing that surprised me is that there were only two mentions in the Post Game thread which is where you would expect posters to have had time to reflect on the game and post accordingly. Anyway, that’s my take on it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m right.

What I find jaw droppingly confundicating is that in the Match Day thread, the only mentions that ANB got were critical of his play early on, after which there was no mention of him at all??!!! Then, to make matters worse, in the Post Game thread where posters were giving us highly detailed lists of players that impressed them and why, again not one single mention of ANB!! The guy had 83% game time, was equal second in possessions with 23, and his tackling figures were in the top five. He worked his [censored] off for the entirety of the game, and was one of our most effective players. He was without a doubt one of the best on ground and certainly deserving of much more credit than the Demonlanders give him. *Scratches head*

And now I’m really [censored] off because it’s going to conflict with the Matilda’s Olympic qualifying game that starts at 8pm, and my oldest son had already claimed the spot on the TV, so we’ll only get to watch half the AFL match on the TV and half on the mobile or iPad. How could the club have not known that there would be a conflict? 10:30am was a much more sensible option!!

I’m a bit worried about how my energy levels will cope, so it’s good to have some quality back-up. Apologies in advance, but this is a bit of self promotion for my band Los Romeos Oxidados who will be playing on April 6th from 3-5pm, at a venue in Alinga Street, Canberra City, going by the name of Smith’s Alternative. This is a big deal for me because it will be my second gig anywhere and my first gig in Canberra, for something like 8 months (we will play in Sydney at the Gasoline Pony in Marrickville, on March 24th from 3pm - for any Sydney based Demonlanders). These gigs are only possible because after completing 6 months (so far) of fairly intensive chemotherapy for my cancer, I am getting a six week break/reprieve and have arranged for the band to play four gigs, with one in Canberra and three in Sydney (we couldn’t make it to Melbourne unfortunately, due to our rhythm section having other commitments on the only weekend we could have done it - we had a gig offered to us at Brunswick’s Retreat Hotel - my niece’s band The Robbie’s will play instead, supporting a friend of mine’s son, who goes by the name of A Man Called Son). I’ll throw the poster I made for that gig, in the comments as well. I’ll put links to the Facebook Event page and the Smith’s ticketing page, and add more info about the Sydney gigs, in the comments section. If you’ve read this far, thanks so much! I’m certainly not absolving Maynard or the AFL over the outcome of that particular case (I was up and out of my chair yelling at the time the hit happened). What I’m saying relates to all of the posters laying the blame for Gus’ retirement at the AFL’s feet… it makes no difference to this final outcome. It will be interesting to see what kind of effect this announcement will have on Maynard himself… I’m no fan of his and cannot forgive that hit, but I can’t help but worry that this could have a big affect on his mental health.
