Colin Wisbey is a well respected watcher of draft talent and I understand he provides his views on a professional basis to some clubs. Some of his past reports have appeared on Demonland but these days he restricts himself mainly to Collingwood and West Coast profiles on Extreme Black & White once after the drafts are over. Here's his top 40 draft picks from http://forums.magpies.net/hotrod/ (players presumably not selected were omitted) - Note: no Sam Blease

Cameron Bruse was just interviewed on SEN. He spoke about how the players had taken a unified approach to the preseason to start back early to make up for a poor 2008 and to get the season There’s great enthusiasm and the real bonus is the number of players training. In the past couple of years there’s been quite a large sized midfied training group meaning that the boys coming into the season are a little bit behind. This year there's less than a handful on modified programme and the majority are doing everything and the fitness staff are getting great results. The boys are felling really enthsaistic about the year ahead. The interviewer mentioned Bohdan Babiczjuk's comments on SEN last week about the group being in a better frame of mind to improve their fitness and really get up to the next level. He used the word "brittle"when referring to how the group was a couple of years ago when he came in but now the group's got more resilience and more capable of getting through the hard end of the season. Cameron said that if you look at the sides that are constantly up there they don't have many injuries so keeping the list together is crucial. We have to make sure all the boys are conditioned well enough to last the pre season and 22 games plus, becasue that's the way you've got to go these days. This year the players are getting fit and strong through core. We've got a young group and they're still developing a lot so it's going to be exciting times ahead. Asked what he was hoping for in 2009 he said that as an individual you always aim to improve on the previous year's performances while as a group we have to make sure that we can improve on such a poor year and if we can play some really consistent footy and push towards making the finals that would be a great result. We've really got a lot of development in us with three quarters of our list 22 and under so whatever we do we’re going to continue to improve. Under Dean Bailey in the first year it's been a hard year with some of the guys who may not have had many games in previous years given an opportunity and some were thrown into the deep end. They’ll be the better for it and for all the experiences the team had last year and we’ll definitely improve. The interviewer said if he was to judge Melbourne over the past ten years it's been a bit of a roller coaster for a while and the last two years the club has hit the bottom. What is the key ingredient for the club to become a legitimate force again in the AFL. Cameron answered that getting key position players was important. Young players like Jack Watts will be a big bonus. We had David Neitz for such a long time and now when Watts really develops as a key forward it will allow the club to straighten up and have someone to kick to. Then we have a number of really good youngsters in defence like Colin Garland, Stefan Martin and Matty Warnock who showed out last year when they got the opportunities. Having some really good key position talent means your side is well on the way. It was mentioned that Brad Green had recommitted to the cause. Did he have any thoughts to of seeking success elesehere. Bruce said all footballers want the oopportunity to play AFL footy but to say you’ve played at one club, knowing you’ve had such an influence on where we were at at the moment and being able to say that you’ve played a part in helping get the side out of a tough position and that was the major reason for Brad staying to be able to repay the club and to get them out of the trouble they're in at the moment. A caller SMS'd about the Cranbourne facility. Bruce said he didn't think he had ever trained on a better surface that's got goals up and hasn't got a cricket pitch in the middle. It's no trouble heading down there and all the facilities are great. The also discussed the gym in which he's a partner. It's been open a while and there's a promotion on today. It's te Jungle Gym in 16-20 William Street Balaclava, just off Carisle Street and there's an open day today from 2.30pm to 6.00pm. Plenty of Demons can be seen there.

It's been reported that Jurrah hasn't nominated for the draft so you might want to revise that. Also Rockliff's been invited to train with the club while Sibasado has not and further, there have been some question marks raised elsewhere about Siba's aptitude so you might want to revise that as well.

BB spoke about how at Hawthorn he organised for an athletics team to be entered in summer competition and was asked why he hasn’t done the same thing at Melbourne. He explained that when he came to the Demons two years ago the list was quite brittle and it was too early for that. You need time to get a lot of the players together and to develop team spirit in an athletics team. With Jack Watts, he’s an exceptional, well-spoken young man, very impressive and what struck BB was that he was happy to be at the club. He came over and said “hello”, introduced himself and his mates and the joy of him playing and the love of the game really stood out. If he plays like that Melbourne is onto a winner. In his first week at the club he hasn’t really done a lot having come in from out of the normal training schedule. He’s done a few football training sessions - mainly just an introduction to the weights. BB cast his eyes around him and said he’s a skinny kid, skinny around the knees. It’s just going to take a little time to prepare him for AFL because being a key position player he’s going to have to play a major role in the future and the club has to be careful with him. The other thing is his body’s still lean. He’s not carrying the extra kilograms so he has to be developed in the right way because if we put weight on there’ll be stresses on his body and the power to weight ratio is changed. You need to take care in those situations. How does Dean Bailey train the players and what is he like as a coach? Bailey’s an excellent teacher so he knows how to get the message across. He’s not an old fashioned type who growls at guys, he explains what he needs done. Players have different strengths and weaknesses and cope differently with situations. He’s coped well in a difficult year and the only time he saw Dean down was in the last couple of games of the season when “we as a team let him down.” This year the club’s started pre season earlier and things are looking so much better. The commitment is good, the players signed off on it and the AFL gave its approval. It will pay off as the pre season goes on and the players are developing well. BB was asked who his pet project at Melbourne – Nathan Jones and Brad Miller have asked for extra development as has Brad Green who has come on in his long term development and recently ran 2.9 secs over 20 metres. His favourite Melbourne player for the Brownlow? Brock McLean (who he also tipped last year before he got injured). On the new set up at Casey Fields. We were like the Leyland Brothers going to a number of different venues and players were complaining the constant changes and how it was bad for the body to have so many different routines. With the move, the players are all happy at Cranbourne.

Answering questions now on the club. First question on Jack Watts ... I'm recording (for home use only) and will report in detail on the questions to follow later this evening or early tomorrow as I'm going out for dinner with the cheese.

Melbourne's Athletic Development Coach Bohdan Babijczuk is being interviewed on SEN today. The first half of the interview was about the changes at Melbourne and how these are impacting on its pre season. He spoke of his role and that of Chris Connolly, the assistant coaches, the fitness manager Joel Hocking, the strength and conditioning coach Valeri Stoimenov and the club's IT people and even the recruiting people who are working in a co-ordinated programme. Stoimenov, from Bulgaria, is a world class weights coach who has coached four world record holders and also knows about team sports because he was also involved with their Olympic handball team. Mentioned when the club did a tough run for the first time at Churchill Park, only nine players could get through the hard session. Also the club has had a lot of players in rehab over the past two years whereas this year there are far less in rehab. For e.g. Matty Whelan has missed the last couple of pre seasons but is doing well along with a lot of the younger players. Now talking a bit about the times when he was with Hawthorn and entered a team in the athletics at the Glenhuntly track.

As WJ said, we have three "live" picks in the rookie draft along with our single selection in the PSD. Here's a lst of who's available based on Inside Football's November Draft Special Lift Out: PLAYERS FROM INSIDE FOOTBALL’S COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE DRAFT BUT NOT DRAFTED IN THE NATIONAL DRAFT (The players in this list were all invited to the National Draft Camp): Tom Allwright 185/83 (TAS) Bryce Carroll 184/72 (WJ) Lance Daly 191/78 (WA) * Matt Deboer 187/85 (WA) Taylor Gilchrist 189/72 (SD) Michael Gugliotta 194/82 (NT) Tom Hill 198/79 (NK) * Kade Klemke 180/78 (MB) Zach Ledin 181/74 (GF) Matthew Martin 196/100 (SA) Sam McGarry 186/77 (SD) Dylan McNeil 178/77 (MB) * Riley Milne 192/78 (MB) Clancee Pearce 183/85 (WA) Ian Richardson 180/75 (WA) Tom Rockliff 183/83 (MB) Zach Sengstock 191/85 (SD) Charlie Sharples 180/74 (SA) James Sheahan 178/73 (MB) Casey Sibosado 191/85 (OC/NT) Tom Simpkin 190/81 (GF) Adam Varcoe 184/64 (SA) * ineligible for PSD or Rookie Draft PLAYERS FROM INSIDE FOOTBALL’S ADDITIONAL LIST OF "SOME MORE LIKELY TYPES" BUT NOT DRAFTED IN THE NATIONAL DRAFT Reece Adams 180/80 (WA) Jonathon Beech 189/82 (SA) Ben Birthisel 191/87 (MB) Jaryd Blair 172/70 (GP) Callan Bond 188/84 (WA) Tyler Brimacombe 189/79 (SA) Greg Broughton 182/80 (WA) Andrew Browne 202/106 (MB) Mitch Clisby 180/75 (SA) Adam Cockie 180/84 (WA) Jamason Daniels 182/77 (MB) Tyson Davis-Neale 186/80 (SA) * Cory Dellilio 180/78 (WA) Andrew Duhau 183/73 (CC) James Farrell 187/81 (WA) Tristan Francis 181/77 (GP) Steven Gaertner 198/88 (DS) Tom German 178/77 (CC) Kane Goodwin 181/82 (WA) Xavier Gotch 175/71 (OC) Patrick Hayes 194/80 (CC) Sam Hughes 177/66 (GF) Dylan Joyce 174/70 (CC) Jason Linke 188/79 (NBR) Anthony Long 188/75 (NT) * Brad Mangan 185/83 (MB) * Brayden O'Hara 180/81 (SA) Joel Palumbo 178/75 (WA) Aaron Purves 187/82 (DS) Hamish Paynter 179/77 (NK) Peter Rolfe 182/81 (SA) Tom Salter 182/80 (TAS) Hamish Shepherd 195/80 (WA) Luke Thompson 192/85 (GF) * Jay Van Berlo 184/80 (WA) Dale Walker 188/82 (ER) Bryn Weadon 185/88 (NBR) Matt Welborn 180/75 (WA) Jack Weston 189/91 (GP) * * ineligible for PSD or Rookie Draft Plenty of potential invitees in that lot although I understand that a few Bushies have been invited to different clubs - Rockliff (Port Adelaide), Milne (Hawthorn)and strawberry haired ruckman Browne and defender Klemke (Richmond). Of course, it doesn't matter who they're training with, we're in a good position to trump two of these clubs because of our positioning at the head of the two drafts on 16 December. The only official invitees at Melbourne are the two listed on afl.com.au before the national draft - Danny Hughes and Shane Tregear.

1 Melbourne Casey Sibosado (NT Thunder) 2 Port Adelaide Josh Carr (Fremantle) 3 Essendon Matt De Boer (Claremont WA) 4 Carlton Chris Johnson (Melbourne) 5 Brisbane Nick Davis (Sydney) 6 Richmond Kade Klemke (Murray U18)

I agree with that observation but nevertheless we should be proud of the fact that the draft has again given young indigenous footballers the opportunity to play football at the highest level and with our club - Hill leads posse of eight

ANOTHER YEAR OF DRAFTING DANGEROUSLY – PART FIVE
alpha33 replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Neither can I quite frankly but I suppose that there might be some cumulative effect from previous selections or just plainly due to the fact Burgan's changing his mind on more than one selection. Any way you look at it, I reckon his credibility has taken a pummeling over this. The chaos theory however, is a good explanation of how a club's choices can be altered by one out of left field selection. This story from WA shows how Fremantle's decision on Stephen Hill might still be affected by earlier picks - DOCKERS SETTLE ON HILL, WITH A PROVISO -
The AFL updated its list today as follows (with additions from the list distributed on Monday November 10 highlighted): Adelaide Brian Donnelly (Ireland) Brisbane Lions Nick Davis (Sydney Swans) Daniel Dzufer (Brisbane Lions) Phillip Smith (Brisbane Lions) Joel Tippett (Brisbane Lions) Carlton Greg Bentley (Port Adelaide) Lachie Hill (Carlton rookie list) Sam Jacobs (Carlton rookie list) Darren Pfeiffer (Carlton) Chris Johnson (Melbourne) Collingwood Colm Begley (Brisbane Lions) Leigh Brown (North Melbourne) Toby Thoolen (Collingwood) Essendon Stuart Crameri (Bendigo Bombers) Tom Hislop (Essendon) Hayden Skipworth (Bendigo Bombers) Fremantle Chris Smith (Fremantle) Matthew Moody (Brisbane Lions) Geelong Nil Hawthorn Nathan Batsanis (Box Hill Hawks) Jarrod Bayliss (Box Hill Hawks) Alex Grima (Hawthorn) Haydn Kiel (Brisbane Lions) Danny Meyer (Richmond) Gary Moss (Hawthorn) Cameron Pederson (Box Hill Hawks) Hugh Sandilands (Hawthorn) Ben Smithwick (Box Hill Hawks) Matthew Suckling (Hawthorn) Rhys O'Sullivan (Box Hill Hawks) Thomas Warby (Box Hill Hawks) Melbourne Daniel Hughes (Melbourne rookie 2007) Shane Tregear (Sandringham) North Melbourne Alan Obst (North Melbourne rookie list) Port Adelaide Jace Bode (Melbourne) Daniel Boyle (Central Districts) Daniel Caire (West Adelaide) Josh Carr (Fremantle) Jason Davenport (Geelong) Tom Holmes (Glenelg) Charlie McAdam (North Adelaide) James Meiklejohn (Port Magpies) Jessie O’Brien (North Adelaide) Brayden O’Hara (Central District) Chris Schmidt (Brisbane Lions) Daniel Stewart (North Adelaide) Wade Thompson (North Adelaide) Richmond Adam Cockshell (Port Adelaide) David Gourdis (Richmond) Matt Davis (Coburg) Nick Liddle (Coburg) Jon Morris (Coburg) Fortunato Caruso (Coburg) St Kilda Nathan Carroll (Melbourne) Brad Howard (St Kilda) Sam Iles (Collingwood) James Kielt (Derry Ireland) Sydney Swans Aaron Bruce (Sydney Swans) Peter Faulks (Sydney Swans) Michael Pyke (Moutaubane France) Kristin Thornton (Sydney Swans) West Coast Nil Western Bulldogs Liam Picken (Williamstown)

ANOTHER YEAR OF DRAFTING DANGEROUSLY – PART FOUR
alpha33 replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Whatever the pundits might say, our expectations should always be high. I don't expect mediocrity. I expect the club's recruiting people to deliver quality recruits for the future. In 2007 the picked five players in the national draft. I think the first three picks will all definitely go on to have long careers. the next year or two will sort out whether Cheney and McNamara will make a go of it. I think we've done well with Martin in the PSD, and Aussie has already been promoted off the rookie list. Valenti and Spencer are possibilities. Not all of the picks will become champion players but I'm entitled to have high expectations when we have four picks in the top 35 with the chances that at least one of the others plus a PSD might become good quality players for the club. -
If available @ 17 I would take Johnston in a heartbeat.

Although a few of you might be getting a bit sick of this, it still interests me and Emma Quayle of the Age was interviewed again on SEN with some interesting comments that I'd like to share with you. She said this is proving to be a very tough year to determine who the clubs are going for with a dozen different scenarios and things are changing on a daily basis. The go home factor is probably not as strong as it used to be with the boys more easily capable of being settled away from home. They're more mature ans the clubs are better at looking after draftees from interstate with for e.g. foster family arrangements etc. Anyhow she has rearranged her top ten along these lines: 1. Melbourne - Jack Watts - still not 100% but close. She doesn't think he will be ready to go straight away. 2. West Coast - looks like going for height in Nick Naitanui even though he needs more development work in him. 3. Fremantle - the key that will set the tone because the Dockers are undecided between Daniel Rich and Stephen Hill. It's hard to know what Fremantle will do and their decision will obviously affect what happens from there. 4. Port Adelaide - Mark Williams always has a big say in the decision here and apparently hasn't met with his recruiters yet> If Freo take Hill, it will be Rich, otherwise Hamish Hartlett. 5. Essendon - Michael Hurley or Steele Sidebottom. The Bombers were interested in Chris Yarran but may have turned off him recently. They say they will take the best available . 6. Carlton - will take Rich if he falls to them. Yarran and/or Hurley in contention. 7. Brisbane - Vossy likes Jack Ziebell. 8. Richmond - Tyrone Vickery - seems they want Hartlett but he probably won't be available by the time their pick comes around. 9. North Melbourne - depends very much on who slides to them They are keen on Lewis Johnston but could settle for Hurley if Essendon and Carlton take Yarran and Rich. 10. Adelaide - the Crows like Trengove but he is still having tests on his knee due to some nerve issues he is still having and this will have an impact on their decision. The Crows also like Shaun McKernan. Well, after that there is Collingwood, Sydney, St. Kilda, Geelong & Hawthorn before Melbourne's next pick and West Coast before our third pick. I'm more and more confident that we can pick up three class footballers in 2008 to put us on the road to a return to being a contender again in the not too distant future. -
DEMONS ASK FOR AFL AID I really object to the way this article is framed. Yes, we are asking for money but part of the reason why is because the AFL has dealt Melbourne a programme devoid of the features that enables clubs like Collingwood and Carlton attract the best sponsors and the biggest crowds and the best stadium deals. As others have mentioned elsewhere, the difference between our draw and that of some of the other clubs is measured in millions of dollars.

Taped the old fashion way for home use only. Here's the transcript: CARO ON 3AW Gerard Healy: There's plenty to talk about tonight but let's address what you wrote about in the Age this morning and that is the Demons. Reading your article and just listening and reading between the lines among various little snippets I've picked up it would appear as if the Demons are a pawn in a very big game at the present time involving the State Government, the MCC and the AFL. Caroline Wilson: I think that's right and they're trying to create their own destiny but of course it's difficult when you're waiting on money from the AFL and I think there was a meeting yesterday morning between Melbourne and the AFL. Well, I know there was. I don’t think it was a particularly pleasant meeting and a lot of that goes back to what previous Melbourne administrations did in the AFL’s eyes and the Commission's eyes with the money they were given but Melbourne need to know what they're getting next year from the AFL and I think they’ll know that … they won't know next week when the Commission meets. There’ll be other stuff discussed next week, Ben Cousins and the Gold Coast primarily but before Christmas they will know. I think they've asked for about $2m next year and I think in the short term they need it. In the long term this new board and this new chief executive Cameron Schwab, there is no doubt in my mind they see the MCG as their home. They want to set up a training base there, even if they move in part terms to the rectangular stadium which is also going to house Melbourne Storm and Melbourne Victory I believe it will only be in part terms … Gerard Healy: Surely they'll outgrow that. If Melbourne are successful they’ll outgrow that office in a very short period of time if they go to the rectangular stadium. Caroline Wilson: They already have. There's room in that design for 45 people, already Melbourne’s staff is 50. The West Coast equivalent that they're going to build hopefully if the government allows it under this new political party in Subiaco has room for 150. It's ridiculous. Gerard Healy: So tell me the forces that are weighing on the Melbourne situation. Caroline Wilson: It's a bureaucratic thicket as we wrote today but I mean what you’ve got is an AFL trying to curry favour with the state government because the AFL needs the state government to put pressure on the MCG so it can get a better stadium better stadium built for Melbourne and Richmond and Collingwood and Hawthorn and all the clubs that play there. You’ve also got a situation where the state government wants an AFL team in that rectangular stadium spending all this money. Gerard Healy: At what about $800,000.00 rent a year? Caroline Wilson: It's too much. It's far too much. Melbourne wants subsidised rent at the rectangular stadium, they want the AFL to subsidise it and what the government and what the Melbourne Olympic Park Trust is saying to Melbourne that if you want to train at Gosch's Paddock or at one of these training areas out of Olympic Park we want you in the new rectangular stadium. Melbourne are saying, "we were born out of the MCG, we don't have a suburb to hang our hat on and they have a blueprint for the future and it is very definitely saying bring the boys back home and home is the MCG. Keep Casey. Always go out to Casey. They are training there at the moment three times a week, they're very happy there but that is very much a community enterprise in the manner that a lot of clubs are doing. I think Richmond is trying to do the same one at Craigieburn Gerard Healy: Isn't it a time though that Melbourne got a home? And one home? Caroline Wilson: Gerard. It's the MCG. Gerard Healy: If they go to the MCG they’ll still be in bits and pieces. They’ll be out at Casey; they’ll be in at the MCG … Caroline Wilson: No they want to have, short term, move into those two largely unused training rooms in the Southern Stand. Dwayne Russell: They're not allowed to train on the MCG. They’ll never be able to do that … Caroline Wilson: No. Gosch’s Paddock is a short walk. Collingwood are doing it at the moment, they’re doing the same. They’re walking from their training ground at Lexus and keep the community facility in the outer suburbs, which is what a lot of clubs are trying to do now, Dwayne. They want the MCG to be their home and in the long term, in the next ten years, when the AFL, the state government and the MCG develop the Great Southern Stand there'll be this huge elite training facility. Brunton Avenue will probably be underground and over it be Melbourne hope will be the Melbourne Football Club and I think it's a very worth strategy, I really do. Caroline Wilson's article in the Age: Demons plan to turn MCG into elite facility
