  1. I like it, but I actually think we did it better with 'Chopper'. It has more style than 'Chopper' though. Very much trying to channel something out of Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange'.
  2. Got 'What's Up Tiger Lilly' the other day. Will probably watch it over the weekend. I concur in a sense RE: the uniqueness. Particularly true of his early films. Whereas, films like 'Manhattan' and 'Husbands & Wives' carry strong similarities (falling for a woman that are way too young for the male character) and he's pretty much always divorcing someone or being divorced. 'Shadows & Fog' is a great little homage, but I found it a little dull and I'm a big fan of German Expressionism. 'Sleeper' is amazing though.
  3. I was the same until I saw 'Hannah & Her Sisters'. I didn't get 'Annie Hall' the first two times I watched it. Wasn't for me. Haven't re-watched it since, but Hannah is just a brilliant film. 'Husbands & Wives' is the other classic. 'Love & Death' is awesome. 'Interiors' is dramatic, but if you like Bergman (as I do), you'll love it.
  4. I reckon she'll romp it home. Allen's leading ladies usually do alright come nomination time anyway.
  5. And hopefully it's a better conclusion than bloody Dexter's plot device riddled, contrived ending.
  6. I've watched a little bit of 'Talking Bad', hadn't caught the podcast. One episode left! Cannot wait.
  7. My love for cinema began with James Bond as a young fella, so I certainly love a spectacle film. Obviously, Nolan's Batman trilogy fits that nicely too. Haven't seen any of the X-Men films. Heard he was great in that though. Never ended up seeing the second or third Matrix films. I didn't mind the tv-series. Prefer MacGyver though. The film was scored by James Bond composer David Arnold, so that gives it an edge too. I'll give the trilogy a go, I'm sure.
  8. I'd put 'The Shield' before 'The Wire'.
  9. That's what I do. My girlfriend can't binge watch like I can. I prefer having shows that I watch just with her and then the shows that I can steam through. You gotta do 'Breaking Bad'. It's certainly one of the greatest shows ever made. I watched the first season of 'The Walking Dead' when it first came out. I was kind of meh on it. Still am. Haven't bothered to jump back into it, although the girlfriend loves it. If you haven't seen the following, highly recommended: 'The Shield', 'Damages', 'Mad Men', 'Sons of Anarchy' (created by one of the co-writers of 'The Shield'), 'Oz', 'The Wire' & 'The Sopranos' (both are good, but overrated), 'Justified' and then the classic that started it all, 'Twin Peaks'.
  10. My feeling RE: 'Dark City' and what I know about it is its influence. It beat 'The Matrix' to the punch and seems to have even more style than that film, which is hard to believe. I might watch it tomorrow night and back that up. I can't remember which cut of 'Blade Runner' I've seen. I have a feeling it was the Director's Cut, but the film hasn't stayed with me. Fassbender's awesome, but I quite enjoyed 'Prometheus'. I guess I enjoyed it in a similar way you enjoyed 'The Fifth Element', Choke. It was a bit of a spectacle, which I'm fine with once in a while.
  11. Been meaning to watch all of 'Dark City'. Saw bits of it in school and then film school. Eraserhead is brilliant and the cinematography and music in Bladerunner is amazing. Not the biggest fan of 'The Fifth Element' though.
  12. My god, Breaking Bad's third last episode. Crazy. Just crazy.
  13. I'm not a big Star Wars fan, but I really enjoyed the final three films (or the first, depending which way you look at it). My favourite is Episode 3.
  14. What I don't understand is why the big studios haven't started capping their budgets at $100 mill. You can't put $100 mill in every time and expect the film to make its budget back. The budget was $150 mill and it's made something like $40 or $50 mill at the moment. It's going to be a bomb. It is a bomb. Get the scripts right, Hollywood. I had this conversation with a few friends today. Instead of $150 mill for one big romp, why not $100 for the romp and then $50 for 5 smaller projects with box office potential? Ridiculous. Definitely staying clear of 'White House Down'. Looking forward to 'World War Z 2' though. That was $150 mill, but was shot twice and still made its budget back. The rest of the studio stuff has been thoroughly underwhelming since MGM's 'Skyfall'.
  15. Exactly.
  16. I should have clarified my post further. I was responding to JJJ who said "he was never soft". Green was soft when he started. He grew into being able to take some hits. I'd agree with the courageous marking. But he started off as soft as butter. He worked on it and improved.
  17. 4 goals is a solid return, but the fact remains is he might cost us as many if he doesn't start to apply defensive pressure. This would be the number one focus for me if I was coach. I'd stipulate to Jack which position he'd be playing and then I'd work hard on his pressure acts and one-per-centers.
  18. They'll be playing different positions, BB. Watts will play on a wing and occasionally float forward. Boyd will play deep and the highest he'll get is centre half forward.
  19. Green was soft. Shirked contests all the time, waited outside packs.
  20. Watts leading at the football yesterday irked me to no end. He doesn't get his hands out in front, so the defender always has an easy spoil. He's not a KPF. He's a player in Goddard's mode. He could make a great goal kicking wingman. I think Roos concurs. His intensity around the contest yesterday was second rate though. At the moment, he cannot apply basic defensive pressure. I'd back Roos to be able to draw that out of him.
  21. I haven't HT. But I was intending to start with Allen's noirs and then watch his comedic stuff. It hasn't worked that way, but I shall add it to the immediate list. Some of the stills from it look stunning.
  22. I have a copy of 'Raising Arizona' that my writing partner gave me, but I've never had the urge to watch it. It sounds like I should. 'Blood Simple' is a masterpiece. Absolutely love it. One of the best noirs I've ever seen (what a nerd). 'Burn After Reading' is terrific too, along with 'Fargo', 'Barton Fink' and 'No Country For Old Men'. 'Miller's Crossing' has its moments too. Haven't seen their take on 'True Grit' yet. I prefer spaghetti Westerns myself. That said, they do have an eye for wonderful shot making, so I'd probably love it. In other news, I watched Woody Allen's 'Interiors' last night. I adored it. I am a massive Bergman fan though, so it makes sense that I'd like Allen's dramatic stuff.
  23. Never been a big fan of 'The Big Lebowski'. I've seen it a couple of times.
  24. I watched 'Hannah and Her Sisters' earlier today. First Woody Allen film I've "got". It's amazing. It might make 'Annie Hall' more accessible on re-watch. Allen might be one of those directors that I eventually love more with age. I didn't "get" Tarantino until seeing 'Jackie Brown' and didn't get the Cohen's until seeing 'Barton Fink' and the third viewing of 'Fargo'. I watched 'O Brother Where Art Thou' tonight too. Loved it. Is anyone a fan of giallos (the Italian precursor to 1980s Hollywood slashers)? I caught 'House With The Laughing Windows' at MIFF this year. Hilarious and intriguing film. Argento is probably the master, but Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci and Sergio Martino are amazing too.
  25. And I take it you probably work in the industry. Yeah, great little nod from Tarantino there. Love the Shaw logo. They weren't even trying with that one.
