Darren Burgess Potential Return to Victoria
Adam The God replied to adonski's topic in Melbourne Demons
Hang on, what's this mate? -
Agree with all this except the Kalani "might choose us". Crazy sort of wrist slashing mate.
-
Ridiculous revisionism. When we re-signed Clarry he was the best midfielder in the game, and x3 (or was it x4 at that stage?) best and fairest, x2 AFLCA award winner, x3 AA and premiership player. Sometimes I wonder if people are serious on here...
-
Inside knowledge or just a feeling?
-
Reminds me of Gulden and Blakey, but with a tougher edge. Lalor looks great too. Still like Draper's burst from stoppage, but Langford has the burst from stoppage and ball use.
-
He's a nice kick, maybe if we trade Fritta, but I'd prefer Wright. We don't want too many who struggle at ground level in.our forward half.

Welcome to Demonland Matthew Jefferson

WHICH MEANS MAYBE GOODY'S PRESSER TODAY LAYS THE GROUND WORK FOR A JEFFERSON DEBUT NEXT WEEK? -
I'm fine with loading up with picks this year in an even draft, knowing we have a good NGA prospect and a F/S next year.
-
It's likely the AFL will bring in the trading of future 2026 picks this year. If that's the case, I'd be landing Houston and then using the other first rounders to be getting at least 1 2024 first rounder.
-
Yeah, don't agree. And JVR is a really good second ruck, but I prefer him focusing on marking and kicking goals. He fatigues way earlier as a forward because of his ruck work. He gets to contests and he's so stuffed he can barely get his hands up to mark. Take it off his shoulders and he'll kick 35-40 goals as a KPF.
-
Price dependent of course, but the more I think about recruiting Peter Wright, the more I like it. It solves our second ruck problem, it also gives JVR and Turner an older, bigger foil, and releases Petty back to defence or pushes Turner out. ANB Wright Trac Kozzy JVR Fritta With Turner, Spargo and Chandler (and McAdam?) to take the other one or two spots. That's got a good mix to it. Wright the only one not great at ground level, and Fritta needs to lift his game defensively, but otherwise you've got 4 guys that like to swarm at ground level. If we can bring in Houston and/or Cumming, *and* keep our 2024 first rounder, it would be a dream trade and draft period IMO.

There was friction between the assistants up to the end of 2019. That was 5 years ago. Also, I guarantee you that 99% of AFL coaches are "autocratic with the assistant coaches and match committee". They have final say, because the buck stops with them. Is this really that much of a surprise?
-
You really think an autocratic coach would last as long as he has and keep all the players onside? Have you ever dealt with anyone under the age of 30? Autocratic coaching styles do not work anymore. Why did he sign on then? Because we have so many poor coaches and poor players? That's you inference... Sure, but do you think 9 years into being amongst our core players (with 2 of those under Roos), wouldn't have given our players time to assess this, and that they'd be switched on enough to know it was all going to go south because he was a walk over? You don't win AFL flags unless you hold players to a high standard. To think any different (and I'm not saying you are) is naive in the extreme. It is a cutthroat industry with 17 other competitors. My family has connections with three players on the current list and I can categorically tell you Goody is not "soft", nor does he let the tail wag the dog, because again, that could be the inference here. But this doesn't mean he is a coach that shouts his head off either. Management is a balance. My understanding is Goody has the balance nicely set.
-
If getting Peter Wright allows JVR to play KPF without having to second ruck, I expect him to explode next year. A forwardline of: ANB Wright Trac Koz JVR Fritta With Turner and maybe Spargo on the bench, with Chandler in reserve is pretty tasty IMO. Almost tempted to do a Werridee and smash up a best 22. Particularly, if Houston and a 2024 first rounder can all be landed.

Maybe a Brayshaw or Serong pops out the other end of the salary cap...

I don't think Salo was ever a good aggressive kick. He was a highly reliable short kick under pressure. Bowser's kicking has gone off a bit this season. I wouldn't mind him being one of our aggressive kickers. I think the FD may agree with you given who we're supposedly targeting in Cumming and Houston. As I note above, I think we can use faster, more aggressive players as +1s at contest with licence to attack. Rivers, Windsor, Bowey, McVee and AMW. That's the difference between this year and 2018. We haven't gone +1, we've finally evened up numbers at the contest. I want us to be more aggressive at stoppage. FWIW, if we get those half back flankers in Cumming and/or Houston, we'd probably be even more damaging with +1 at stoppage. I think we need at least one, if not two young mids to join a slowing Viney, a stuttering and defensive Sparrow, and hopefully a rejuvenated Clarry. Be interesting to see which way we go.
-
Yep, somehow retain the shape of 2021-2023 and the ball use of 2018. I think actually it's doable. Crudely, it just means we change the way we are prepared to move the ball, which may lead to more scores against, but the better shape behind the ball should prevent huge leakages. I do wonder if this is ultimately what we've been trying this year, it just didn't work.
-
It's basically the Selwyn role under Burgo.

Where are we at now for Jefferson's goal tally this year? He must be above 30 now, that's with a few games early in season in defence. -
I think we actually need to go back to +1 at the contest. We've had a system that is determined to manufacture a +1 behind the ball and enabled our interceptors to take charge and our mids to play an extremely taxing game that still allows us territory with Max's dominance. But I want to share this clip from round 23, 2018. Not only is there a huge Melbourne crowd at the MCG against GWS (wouldn't that be nice again), look at the dare of ball movement. Not only do we try and use the corridor at all costs, we add numbers to stoppage to swarm (doesn't have to be bees to honey pot when we get it right) and we kick it to a predictable spot 30m out directly in front, where TMac or Weideman bring the ball to ground. We then have the likes of Spargo, Trac and our mids getting to the foot of that contest. Highlights: Melbourne v GWS https://www.afl.com.au/video/82285 I'm not saying we should play a forward half too stringently, but it does play to a similar Goody philosophy of playing the percentages. The overriding point is I think we need to back in our defensive 7 to win or halve their contests regularly enough, if we outnumber at stoppage and force enough post clearance pressure on op mids. So I'd be adding numbers to stoppage, and using McVee, Rivers and even Windsor and AMW like this. It's effectively what Collingwood did last year too, by adding numbers to the contest, which is vulnerable the other way, but if you play this game with our bulls like Clarry, Viney and Trac, it means their disposals are often handballs or short kicks to get it to the outside. With big pre seasons, Clarry and Viney can absolutely be those contested bulls with swarming support around them. The ball movement is then forced to be fast and chaotic, because you're committing numbers to the stoppage and leaving less behind the ball. But trust our defenders to deal with the slingshot if it tries to hurt us the other way. You can see the excitement this ball movement generates for the crowd in the above clip.

I actually think he's much better deeper anyway. Whenever he plays higher and when he played at half back in 2018, he'd consistently have his kicks intercepted, which is a strange one given he's a beautiful kick.
-
Nope, I think he'll move between wing, half back and midfield, but having Lingers signed up means one wing is sorted and maybe there's another wing for Howes or even Woey...
-
Another great thing about this re-signing is Windsor has a wing partner for the next 4 years and we can really plan around that. Brilliant.
-
Lingers! The best winger in the game. Love the 4 years. The guy is a freak and will be 32 by his final year of contract. No problem with that at all. He may even get another contract or two after that. Well done, Tim Lamb.

@Engorged Onion, I'd argue Goody started his coaching career by being extremely offensively minded, so much so that the players couldn't wait to release the Roos defensive shackles under Goody in 2017. We then saw the Demon Diamond defence, we had attacking half backs like Hunt screaming off the back of square to receive from centre stoppage before 666 scuttled that. In 2018, we had the third highest percentage of 131.4% in the league behind minor premier Richmond on 136.1% and 8th placed Geelong on 131.6%. But we scored 156 more points than the next best, Richmond, and way more than any other team in the top 4. We conceded the 9th most points though. I think we have much better personnel in 2024/2025 than we did in 2018. Think May and Lever versus Oscar McDonald (sorry @Slartibartfast) and Sam Frost. In a way, I hope we back a version of that game plan, given where the game is going. It was still a territory based game with a super high press. If we go back to that though, we need to sort out stoppage.
