Hinkley got them to multiple Prelims. People widely underestimate how hard that is. Geelong, Collingwood are exceptions, not the rule. They make top 4 and got into a position to win. They ultimately faltered. Had we made at least one Prelim in 22 or 23, Goodwin would probably still be coach. Internally at AFL level, there is a lot of weight put onto Prelims. Also he had an okay list. Imv they significantly over performed with him as coach. The one year with him taking a back seat, they suddenly turn into a potato farm of a team. Not surprising. That said it was definitely time for a change.

I have no idea. In my view all teams can win it. Historically, the best defensive teams have the best chance to win it. A few outliers but you can pick out teams who are scored against too easily, too often. gws and freo. I'd put money on one of Adelaide, Collingwood or Hawthorn. Gold Coast is a smokey if they get going.

We had six club debutants in round 1. I think 4 were first gamers? The others barely 20 games. I think internally they were bullish about the year but any suggestion we weren't in mini-rebuild mode was just PR speak to temper down negative press that had surrounded the club for 12 months. After 2 straight top 4 exits, and missing finals in 2024 of course the club was going to try and drum up their expectations.

Steven May is a great guy, wears his heart on his sleeve, bloody passionate, loves a joke. I think he needs a very specific type of environment to thrive. Now that we're struggling maybe the club isn't right for both him and the team. I love May. I'll be sad to see him go. I've joked with him a few times on Instagram, he responds to fans. But I've thought for a while that it's probably time.

Those in the 10th-14th range have all demonstrated this round that they have all grossly underperformed this year. We won 11 games last year and finished 14th. We have 7 this year and finished...14th. Says a lot. I reckon the top 8 will look very different next year. I wonder if the lose coach keeps their job.

Not sure how it would work. I said i agreed with the punishment. I don't think is there is an easy answer. And I don't think there is a way to escape it. I'm not saying to avoid the exposure or public knowledge. Rather deal with it and propose a solution. The AFL has lost all respect for its process with this. Either there is a rule and clear penalty or there isn't. How exactly would any sort of medical condition have justified it? The best solution here was probably the AFL coming out and investigating, if it's determined he said it, it is a suspension. That's it. You either said it or you didn't. The AFL opens the door to contesting the punishment so it becomes a circus. You can't be subjective with definitive language. In the NBA it would have been a flat out suspension or fine. That's it. Take it and move on.

My honest view is that there is an unwritten law and it probably could have been dealt with between peers. I also don't have an issue with the punishment. But I am admittedly uneasy about how it all transpired. Honestly I reckon it would have been better for everyone including the LGBTQ community if it was dealt with behind closed doors. I also wonder if Collingwood would have said anything if it was in round 1.

100%. But we are close. I think we need to be really careful with our list decisions because some polish, some refinements turn those six-ish games by less than 10 points into wins. I get the feeling there is a push internally to make changes regarding Oliver and Petracca... I don't know where I sit. We have lost far more close games than we've won... that can turn quickly. We haven't been the same since the 2023 finals series but tonight was as close as we've gotten to that team that year. We have too many guns to be where we are. I just feel like tonight was more a positive than a negative for us.
